It is generally known that microstructure can considerably affect the tribological behavior of non-lubricated rubbing. However, there is still a lack of awareness about the effect of microstructure on oxidative wear. The present study focused on the effect of martensite volume fraction (MVF) on oxidative wear by using 25CD4 dual-phase steel. Dry friction tests were performed on a ball-on-flat tribometer with a normal load of 15 N and a mean sliding velocity of 0.013 m/s. Friction coefficient and wear rate increase with the increasing MVF. SEM observation and EDXS analyses of the wear scars showed that the oxidation increases with decreasing MVF. For lower MVF, the main wear mechanism is mild oxidative wear. For higher MVF, severe adhesion is predominant as a wear mechanism. The size of the debris decreases with decreasing MVF.

Abstract The effect of the morphology and the martensite volume fraction on the microhardness, the tensile, the friction and the wear behavior of API X52 dual phase (DP) steel has been investigated. Three different heat treatments were used to develop dual phase steel with different morphologies and with different amounts of martensite: Intermediate Quenching Treatment/Water (IQ); Step Quenching Treatment (SQ) and direct quenching (DQ). Tribological tests are conducted on DP steels using a ball-on-disc configuration under normal load of 5 N and at a sliding speed of 4 cm/s were used to study the friction and wear behavior of treated samples. Results show that the ferrite–martensite morphology has a great influence on the mechanical properties of dual phase steel. The steel subjected to (IQ) treatment attain superior mechanical properties compared to the SQ and the DQ treatments. On the other hand, it is also found that the friction coefficient and the wear rate (volume loss) decrease when the hardness and the martensite volume fraction increase. The steel with fine fibrous martensite provide good wear resistance.

The morphology of eutectic and primary silicon phases was analyzed by OM and SEM. OM and SEM results show that pure Nd can significantly refine both eutectic and primary silicon of hypereutectic Al-20%Si alloy. Morphology of primary silicon is transformed from star-shaped and irregular morphology to fine polyhedral and grain size of primary silicon is refined from 80~120 μm to 20~50 μm. Friction and wear resistance tests show that friction coefficient of Al-20%Si alloy reduces after Nd modification. Wear resistance of Al-20%Si alloy after modification is significantly improved as compared to the initial sample. The dominant wear mechanism for 0.3% Nd modified alloy is abrasive wear, adhesive wear and oxidative wear mechanism, but wear mechanism for unmodified alloy is abrasive wear and adhesive wear mechanism.

Tribological behavior of B4C-SiC self-mated pairs was studied, and pre-oxidation treatment was adopted to improve the tribological properties of B4C-SiC. At the same SiC content, self-friction coefficient of B4C-SiC decreases with the increase of sliding distance, normal load, and sliding velocity; while the increasing of SiC content leads to increase of both self-friction coefficient and ware rate, which was determined to be within the range of 0.8×10-6~5.8×10-6 mm3·N-1·m-1. Pre-oxidation treatment of the B4C-SiC resulted in the formation of B2O3/H3BO3 lubricant layers, which effectively reduced the self-friction coefficient.

Biocompatible β-type Ti-45Nb alloy with a low elastic modulus is promising in alleviating the stress shielding effect of Ti-based hard-tissue replacement implants. In this work, the ultra-fine-grained (UFG) microstructures with different grain sizes were prepared by multi-axial compression (MAC) processing of Ti-45Nb alloys, and the mechanical properties and the fretting wear properties of Ti-45Nb alloys in different grain sizes were investigated. The results show that the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the sample processed by 27 passes MAC increase by 76% and 91%, respectively, with an elongation of more than 9%. After MAC processing, the friction coefficient and volume wear rate gradually decrease. In addition, before MAC processing, the Ti-45Nb sample shows a wear mechanism of severe adhesive wear, oxidative wear and fatigue delamination; while after MAC processing, the wear mechanism switches to abrasive wear and slight adhesive wear with slight oxidative wear, indicating that grain refinement helps to improve the anti-fretting properties of Ti-45Nb alloys.
