Spacecraft have monopropellant thruster systems for attitude control in the vacuum of space. Hydroxylamine nitrate is a green propellant that has high performance and low toxicity. Owing to the high adiabatic decomposition temperature of the hydroxylamine nitrate propellant, it is necessary to develop a catalyst with high thermal stability. We used a platinum barium hexaaluminate catalyst for green propellant hydroxylamine nitrate thrusters. Barium hexaaluminate support was prepared by a wet impregnation method and heat treatment. Platinum, the active material, was coated on catalyst supports. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific surface was also investigated. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope imagery were used to confirm the formation of barium hexaaluminate. A hydroxylamine nitrate propellant blended with methanol was used for performance evaluation via firing tests of the thruster. The catalytic decomposition performance of each test was evaluated by calculating the characteristic velocity efficiency using the pressure of the chamber at the end of the catalyst bed and the mass flow rate of the propellant. As the catalyst bed was preheated to 350 °C, the characteristic velocity efficiency was 71.9%. Test results revealed that the platinum barium hexaaluminate catalyst is feasible for a hydroxylamine nitrate thruster.

With the increasing of space activities and people’s awareness of environmental protection, it is necessary to develop a new non-toxic space propulsion system with high performance. Hydroxylammonium nitrate (HAN)/1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium ethylsulfate([Emim][EtSO4]) blend ionic liquid propellant is a potential replacement with non-toxic and high-performance characteristics for hydrazine type liquid propellants, which can be used in both chemical and electrical propulsion system. This paper introduced the thermogravimetric experimental analysis (TGA-DSC) results of HAN/[Emim][EtSO4] ionic liquid propellant with the thermal decomposition and catalytic decomposition process. Its mass-loss process and exothermic process under different reaction conditions at a heating rate of 5K/min~15K/min were studied. Generally, the mass-loss results showed that there were four characteristic stages during the decomposition process of the HAN/[Emim][EtSO4] ionic liquids, which were the evaporation of the water solvent, decomposition of the HAN component, further decomposition of the [Emim][EtSO4], and slow loss of the residual substances. At the same time, two exothermic peaks were observed, which respectively corresponded to the decomposition of HAN and the further decomposition of [Emim][EtSO4]. Using catalyst can significantly reduce the decomposition temperature of the propellant and the residual mass. The contents in this paper proved that this propellant had a good application prospect within the catalytic ignition aerospace thruster.

The aim of the present study has been to evaluate the effect of hybridization of montmorillonite (MMT) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on the thermal and viscoelastic properties of shape memory epoxy polymer (SMEP) nanocomposites. In this study, ultra-sonication was utilized to disperse 1%, 3%, and 5% MMT in combination with 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% MWCNT into the epoxy system. The fabricated SMEP hybrid nanocomposites were characterized via differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. The storage modulus (E’), loss modulus (E”), tan δ, decomposition temperature, and decomposition rate, varied upon the addition of the fillers. Tan δ indicated a reduction of glass transition temperature (Tg) for all the hybrid SMEP nanocomposites. 3% MMT/1% MWCNT displayed best overall performance compared to other hybrid filler concentrations and indicated a better mechanical property compared to neat SMEP. These findings open a way to develop novel high-performance composites for various potential applications, such as morphing structures and actuators, as well as biomedical devices.

Residual hemicellulose could enhance cellulose nanofiber (CNF) processing as it impedes the agglomeration of the nanocellulose fibrils and contributes to complete nanofibrillation within a shorter period of time. Its effect on CNF performance as a reinforcement material is unclear, and hence this study seeks to evaluate the performance of CNF in the presence of amorphous hemicellulose as a reinforcement material in a polypropylene (PP) nanocomposite. Two types of CNF were prepared: SHS-CNF, which contained about 11% hemicellulose, and KOH-CNF, with complete hemicellulose removal. Mechanical properties of the PP/SHS-CNF and PP/KOH-CNF showed an almost similar increment in tensile strength (31% and 32%) and flexural strength (28% and 29%) when 3 wt.% of CNF was incorporated in PP, indicating that hemicellulose in SHS-CNF did not affect the mechanical properties of the PP nanocomposite. The crystallinity of both PP/SHS-CNF and PP/KOH-CNF nanocomposites showed an almost similar value at 55–56%. A slight decrement in thermal stability was seen, whereby the decomposition temperature at 10% weight loss (Td10%) of PP/SHS-CNF was 6 °C lower at 381 °C compared to 387 °C for PP/KOH-CNF, which can be explained by the degradation of thermally unstable hemicellulose. The results from this study showed that the presence of some portion of hemicellulose in CNF did not affect the CNF properties, suggesting that complete hemicellulose removal may not be necessary for the preparation of CNF to be used as a reinforcement material in nanocomposites. This will lead to less harsh pretreatment for CNF preparation and, hence, a more sustainable nanocomposite can be produced.

Lead-acid batteries are now widely used for energy storage, as result of an established and reliable technology. In the last decade, several studies have been carried out to improve the performance of this type of batteries, with the main objective to replace the conventional plates with innovative electrodes with improved stability, increased capacity and a larger active surface. Such studies ultimately aim to improve the kinetics of electrochemical conversion reactions at the electrode-solution interface and to guarantee a good electrical continuity during the repeated charge/discharge cycles. To achieve these objectives, our contribution focuses on the employment of nanostructured electrodes. In particular, we have obtained nanostructured electrodes in Pb and PbO2 through electrosynthesis in a template consisting of a nanoporous polycarbonate membrane. These electrodes are characterized by a wider active surface area, which allows for a better use of the active material, and for a consequent increased specific energy compared to traditional batteries. In this research, the performance of lead-acid batteries with nanostructured electrodes was studied at 10 C at temperatures of 25, −20 and 40 °C in order to evaluate the efficiency and the effect of temperature on electrode morphology. The batteries were assembled using both nanostructured electrodes and an AGM-type separator used in commercial batteries.
