The tensile strength evolution and strengthening mechanism of Cu–Fe in-situ composites were investigated using both experiments and theoretical analysis. Experimentally, the tensile strength evolution of the in-situ composites with a cold deformation strain was studied using the model alloys Cu–11Fe, Cu–14Fe, and Cu–17Fe, and the effect of the strain on the matrix of the in-situ composites was studied using the model alloys Cu–3Fe and Cu–4.3Fe. The tensile strength was related to the microstructure and to the theoretical strengthening mechanisms. Based on these experimental data and theoretical insights, a mathematical model was established for the dependence of the tensile strength on the cold deformation strain. For low cold deformation strains, the strengthening mechanism was mainly work hardening, solid solution, and precipitation strengthening. Tensile strength can be estimated using an improved rule of mixtures. For high cold deformation strains, the strengthening mechanism was mainly filament strengthening. Tensile strength can be estimated using an improved Hall–Petch relation.

In the present study, in situ reaction technique has been employed to prepare AA5052 matrix composites reinforced with different vol. % of ZrB2 particles (i.e., 0, 4.5, and 9 vol. %). Composites have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm the in situ formation of ZrB2 particles in the matrix. Optical Microscopy (OM) studies reveal the refinement of aluminum-rich phase due to the presence of ZrB2 particles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies reveal size and distribution of ZrB2 particles while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals the presence of dislocations in the matrix around ZrB2 particles. Hardness and tensile testing of composites have been carried out at room temperature to evaluate the mechanical properties. The results reveal the improvement in hardness and strength with increased amount of ZrB2 particles. Strength of AA5052/ZrB2 in situ composites has been analyzed by various strengthening mechanism models. The analysis revealed that Orowan and Solid solution strengthening mechanisms are the predominant mechanism for high strength composites. Theoretical yield strength is about 6–10% higher than the experimental values due to clustering tendency of ZrB2 particles.

The Al2O3-TiC/Al composites were prepared by injecting CO2 gas into Ti contained Al-Si alloy melts. The microstructure of the composites was examined by XRD, SEM and TEM. It was indicated that both Al2O3 and TiC particles can be formed by the in situ reaction of CO2 with Ti and Al in the melten alloys. The Al2O3 and TiC particles in size of 0.3~1.5μm distributed uniformly in the matrix. The volume fraction of the particles is mainly depend upon the time of CO2 injection. The tensile strength at room temperature of the composites can reach 346.08MPa and the hardness is 149.6MPa HBS, repectively, which are higher than those of the matrix alloy.

The in-situ Ti alloying of aluminium alloys was fulfilled by electrolysis, and the material was made into A356 alloy and used in automobile wheels. The results show that the grains of the A356 alloy was refined and the second dendrites arm was shortened due to the in-situ Ti alloying. Trough 3-hour solution treatment and 2-hour aging treatment for the A356 alloy, the microstructures were homogeneous, and Si particles were spheroid and distribute in the matrix fully. The outstanding mechanical properties with tensile strength (σb≥300Mpa) and elongation values (δ≥10%) have been obtained because the heat treatment was optimized. Compared with the traditional materials, tensile strength and elongation were increased by 7.6~14.1% and 7.4~44.3% respectively. The qualities of the automobile wheels were improved remarkably.

In situ melt copolycondensation was proposed to prepare biodegradable copolyester nanocomposites based on degradable components poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA), rigid segments poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), and nanoparticles polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS). The morphologies and dispersions of two POSS nanoparticles (POSS-NH2 and POSS-PEG) in the copolyester PLABT matrix and their effects on the mechanical properties were investigated. The results demonstrated that the morphologies and dispersions of POSS-NH2 and POSS-PEG showed quite different characteristics. POSS-PEG took better dispersion in the PLABT, while POSS-NH2 had poor dispersions and formed crystalline microaggregates. Due to the good dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion of POSS-PEG with the matrix, the tensile strength and Young’s modulus were greatly improved from 6.4 and 9.6 MPa for neat PLABT up to 11.2 and 70.7 MPa for PLABT/POSS-PEG nanocomposite. Moreover, the incorporation of POSS-PEG could impart macromolecular chains good flexibility and improve the mobility of the chains, so the the elongation at break of PLABT/POSS-PEG nanocomposite dramatically increased from 190 to 350 % compared with neat PLABT.

Cu-14Fe and Cu-17Fe alloys were produced by casting and processed into in situ composites by hot and cold deformation, and intermediate heat treatment. The microstructures were investigated by using a scanning electron microscope and an optical microscope. The electrical conductivity was evaluated by using a digital micro-ohmmeter. The tensile strength was measured by using an electronic tensile-testing machine. The results show that there are similar cast and deformation microstructures in Cu-14Fe and Cu-17Fe. The tensile strength of deformation-processed Cu-17Fe in situ composite is much higher than that of Cu-14Fe, while the conductivity of deformation-processed Cu-17Fe in situ composite is slightly lower than that of Cu-14Fe at the same cold deformation strain. The Cu-17Fe in situ composite produced by using proper thermo-mechanical processing possesses a good combination of tensile strength and electrical conductivity.

Biodegradable aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters/POSS nanocomposites were synthesized via in situ melt copolycondensation of terephthalic acid (TPA), poly(L-lactic acid) oligomer (OLLA), 1,4-butanediol (BDO) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) reagents (POSS-NH2 and POSS-PEG). The morphologies and dispersions of two POSS reagents in the nanocomposites and their effects on the mechanical and thermal properties were investigated. TEM and XRD characterizations confirmed that POSS-NH2 formed crystalline microaggregates and took poor dispersions in the nanocomposite, while POSS-PEG had better dispersion in the matrix. Due to the good dispersion and interfacial adhesion of POSS-PEG with the copolyester PBTL matrix, the tensile strength and the Young’s modulus greatly increased for PBTL/POSS-PEG nanocomposite. Moreover, compared with POSS-NH2 the existence of POSS-PEG imparted PBTL good flexibility and increased the mobility of the chains, so the glass-transition temperature and the heat of melting as well as the elongation at break were obviously influenced for PBTL/POSS-PEG nanocomposite.

Al 2 O 3 particles reinforced ZL109 composite was prepared by in situ reaction between Fe 2 O 3 and Al . The phases were identified by XRD and the microstructures were observed by SEM and TEM. The Al 2 O 3 particles in sub-micron size distribute uniformly in the matrix and Fe displaced from the in situ reaction forms net-like alloy phases with Cu , Ni , Al , Mn ect. The hardness and the tensile strength at room temperature of the composites have a small increase compared with the matrix. However, the tensile strength at 350°C can reach 92.18 MPa, which is 18.87 MPa higher than that of the matrix. The mechanism of the reaction in the Fe 2 O 3/ Al system was studied by DSC. The reaction between Fe 2 O 3 and Al involves two steps. The first step in which Fe 2 O 3 reacts with Al to form FeO and Al 2 O 3 takes place at the matrix alloy melting temperature. The second step in which FeO reacts with Al to form Fe and Al 2 O 3 takes place at a higher temperature.

Using Ti, Al and Cr2O3 as starting materials, Al2O3 particulate reinforced TiAl composites have been fabricated by in-situ reaction synthesis method. Effects of the Cr2O3 addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the TiAl/Al2O3 composites were investigated in detail. The results show that the composites have a matrix of TiAl, Ti3Al, and minor Cr containing phases, and a second reinforcement Al2O3. The addition of Cr2O3 effectively refined the structure of the matrix, and as a result, the mechanical properties of TiAl composites are improved. At Cr2O3 7.36 wt%, the flexural strength and fracture toughness reach the maximum values of 634.62 MPa and 9.79 MPa·m1/2, which are increased by 80% and 30%, respectively. The strengthening mechanism is also discussed.

A novel in-situ reaction system Al-Zr-O was developed. In-situ Al3Zr and Al 2 O 3 particulate reinforced A356 alloy matrix composites have been fabricated by direct melt reaction method. The results show that the maximum size of Al3Zr and Al 2 O 3 particulate synthesized in the system ZrOCl2-A356 is 1um and 3um respectively, and they are well distributed in the matrix. The investigation shows that Al3Zr crystal is in the shape of polyhedron and rectangle. There is a faceted growth phenomenon on Al3Zr crystal surface. It is firstly found that the Al3Zr crystal grows in the mechanism of twin. The twin plane is [Formula: see text], and the twinning direction is [Formula: see text]. The crystal morphology of in-situ[Formula: see text] particulate is rectangle or sphere. Furthermore. ( Al 3 Zr+Al 2 O 3) p / A356 composites have not only higher tensile strength at room temperature (376.2MPa) but also higher yield strength (319.4MPa) and higher tensile strength at elevated temperature (200°C) than that of A356 alloy.
