This paper focuses on the effects of transverse shear and root rotations in both symmetric and asymmetrical end-notched flexure (AENF) interlaminar fracture toughness tests. A theoretical model is developed, whereas the test specimen is subdivided into four regions joined by a rigid interface. The differential equations for the deflection and rotations of each region are solved within both the Euler–Bernoulli simple beam theory (SBT) and the more refined Timoshenko beam theory (TBT). A concise analytical equation is derived for the AENF deflection profile, compliance, and transverse shearing forces as a function of the specimen geometry, stacking sequence, delamination length, and fixture span. Modeling results are compared with numerical finite element analyses, obtaining a very good agreement. Performed analyses suggest that even in the case of symmetrical and unidirectional laminates considered as pure mode II fracture, a complex compression/tension and bending moment state is present, as well as a slight contribution of anti-planar shear at the vicinity of the crack tip.

Thin-walled section beams have Brazier effect to exhibit a nonlinear response to bending moments, which is a geometric nonlinearity problem and different from eigenvalue problem. This paper is aimed at investigating the Brazier effect in thin-walled angle-section beams subjected to pure bending about its weak axis. The derivation using energy method is presented to predict the maximum bending moment and section deformation. Both numerical analyses and experimental results were used to show the validity of the proposed formula. Numerical results show that the boundary condition can influence the results due to the end effect, and that the influence tends to be negligible when the length of angle beam goes up to 30 times as the length of beam side. When the collapse in experiments is governed by Brazier flattening, the moment vs. curvature curve deviates significantly from the linear beam theory, but coincides well with the proposed formula in consideration of the restraint due to limited span of experimental setup. It can be concluded that the proposed formula shows good agreement with numerical results and experimental results.

In this work, we present and discuss on the deflection estimation of a bi-dimensional panel by using Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) as strain sensors embedded in the structure and a method based on the classical beam theory. The existing difficulties in the direct measure of the deflection are overcome thanks to the proposed technique and a real-time indirect structural monitoring is possible both on small and large structure. In many tests the estimated deflection with the proposed method has been compared with direct deflection measurements obtained with a mechanical comparator showing good agreement. A resolution of few tens of microns over a surface of the order of 1 m2 has been reached.

Experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of arm length on the accuracy of two typical conventional torque wrenches, namely, setting type torque wrench (STW) and indicating type torque wrench (ITW). The experiment results demonstrate that the measurement values of STW rises rapidly with decreasing arm length while measured torque of ITW shows irrelevant to arm length. Theoretical solution with respect to STW shows quite good agreement with experiment results. Irrelevance of arm length regard to ITW may be attributable to compensation of bending moment measurement due to proper arrangement of circuit and structural design. In order to conduct a proper assessment at a calibration laboratory or ensure its reliability with reference to actual use conditions, a torque wrench should be used by a customer at the loading point as recommended.

The theoretical procedure presented herein examines the influence of retaining the transverse shear force in the yield criterion and rotatory inertia on the dynamic plastic response of beams. Exact theoretical rigid perfectly plastic solutions are presented for a long beam impacted by a mass and a simply supported beam loaded impulsively. It transpires that rotatory inertia might play a small, but not negligible, role on the response of these beams. The results in the various figures indicate that the greatest departure from an analysis which neglects rotatory inertia but retains the influence of the bending moment and transverse shear force in the yield condition is approximately 11 percent for the particular range of parameters considered.

Magnetostrictive biomimetic whiskers have been used as tactile and flow sensors. Compared to other types of whiskers, such whiskers have the advantage of being able to perform static and dynamic measurements. For dynamic measurement, the whisker’s resolution changes with varying vibration frequency; however, the mechanism for this influence has not been studied yet. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate the resolution–frequency correlation. First, the structure and operation principle of the whisker were analyzed. Then, the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory was employed to establish the sensing model of the magnetostrictive whisker. Finally, the mapping relationship between sensor resolution and frequency was obtained. The eigenfrequency analysis was implemented by FEM to obtain the frequency response of the whisker. A vibration experimental system was built for dynamic testing. The experimental results were in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. Furthermore, it was noted that the resolution was positively correlated with frequency, and the maximum resolution was attained at the natural frequency (two peak values appeared at the first-order and second-order eigenfrequencies). Our research reveals the manner in which a whisker sensor’s resolution is affected by the vibration frequency. The theoretical model can be used to predict the resolution of magnetostrictive whisker sensors.

The free vibration of curvilinearly stiffened doubly curved shallow shells is investigated by the Ritz method. Base on the first order shear deformation shell theory and Timoshenko’s 3-D curved beam theory, the strain and kinetic energies of the stiffened shells are introduced. Numerical results with different geometrical shells and boundary conditions, and different stiffener locations and curvatures are analyzed to verify the feasibility of the presented Ritz method for solving the problems. The results show good agreement with those using the FE method.

Currently, a number of very large container ships are being built and more are on order, and some concerns have been expressed about the importance of the reduced hull girder stiffness to the wave-induced loads. The main concern is related to the fatigue life, but also a possible increase in the global hull girder loads as consequence of the increased hull flexibility must be considered. This is especially so as the rules of the classification societies do not explicitly account for the effect of hull flexibility on the global loads. In the present paper an analysis has been carried out for the 9,400 TEU container ship used as case-ship in the EU project TULCS (Tools for Ultra Large Container Ships). A non-linear time-domain strip theory is used for the hydrodynamic analysis of the vertical bending moment amidships in sagging and hogging conditions for a flexible and a rigid modelling of the ship. The theory takes into account non-linear radiation forces (memory effects) through the use of a set of higher order differential equations. The non-linear hydrostatic restoring forces and non-linear Froude-Krylov forces are determined accurately at the instantaneous position of the ship in the waves. Slamming forces are determined by a standard momentum formulation. The hull flexibility is modelled as a non-prismatic Timoshenko beam. Generally, good agreement with experimental results and more accurate numerical predictions has previously been obtained in a number of studies. The statistical analysis is done using the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) supplemented with Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, strip-theory calculations are compared to model tests in regular waves of different wave lengths using a segmented, flexible model of the case-ship and good agreement is obtained for the longest of the waves. For the shorter waves the agreement is less good. The discrepancy in the amplitudes of the bending moment can most probably be explained by an underestimation on the effect of momentum slamming in the strip-theory applied.

Abstract The equilibrium equations for a helically buckled tubing are developed and solved directly. The results show that the packer has a strong influence on the pitch of the helix, and that the pitch developed by the helix is different from the pitch calculated by conventional methods. In addition, the solution providesshear loads and bending moments at the packer andconstraining force exerted on the tubing by the exterior casing. This last result can be used to estimate friction effects on tubing buckling. Introduction The buckling behavior of well tuning and its effect on packer selection and installation have received much attention in the industry. The most well-known analysis of this problem is by Lubinski et al. Later analyses. such as by Hammerlindl, have extended and refined these results. There were two major contributions of this analysis:to clarity the roles of pressures, temperatures, fluid flow, pretension, and packer design in the buckling problem andto present a mechanical model of well buckling behavior that predicted the buckled well configuration as a function of applied loads. The principal results from this model were the motion of the tubing at the packer and the stresses developed in the tubing as a result of buckling. The major features of the conventional model of buckling behavior are summarized as follows.Slender beam theory is used to relate bending moment to curvature.The tubing is assumed to buckle into a helical shape.The principle of virtual work is used to relate applied buckling load to pitch of the helix.Friction between the buckled tubing and restraining casing is neglected. The geometry of the helix is described by three equations: (1) (2) and (3) where u1, u2, and u3 are tubing centerline locations in the x, y, and z coordinate directions, respectively; Theta is the angular coordinate (Fig. 1); r is the tubing-casing radial clearance: and P is pitch of the helix. The principle of virtual work relates P to the buckling force, F, through the following formula. (4) Several questions are not addressed by this analysis:What is the shape of the tubing from packer to fully developed helix?What are the resulting shear loads and moments at the packer caused by buckling?What are the forces exerted on the helically buckled tubing by the restraining casing? Solutions to Questions 2 and 3 would be particularly useful for evaluating friction effects on the tubing and the effect of induced loads on the packer elements. This information would allow better estimates of tubing movement and provide detailed load reactions at the packer for improved packer design. The solution to Question 1 could be particularly interesting because of its effect on results obtained by virtual work methods. SPEJ P. 616^

The equations of transverse bending of shear-deformable plates are used for the derivation of a system of one-dimensional equations for beams with unsymmetrical cross section, with account for warping stiffness, in addition to bending, shearing, and twisting stiffness. Significant results of the analysis include the observation that the rate of change of differential bending moment is given by the difference between torque contribution due to plate twisting moments and torque contribution due to plate shear stress resultants; a formula for shear center location which generalizes a result by Griffith and Taylor so as to account for transverse shear deformability and end-section warping restraint; a second-order compatibility equation for the differential bending moment; a contracted boundary condition of support for unsymmetrical cross-section beam theory in place of an explicit consideration of the warping deformation boundary layer; and construction of a problem where the effect of the conditions of support of the beam is such as to give noncoincident shear center and twist center locations.

The force-deflection characteristics, of two unusual types of multiple loop arch, to vertical and radial displacement, are derived from simple beam theory. Check measurements on enlarged models were in good agreement with the theory presented. The variations in stiffness resulting from changes in the size, shape and geometry of the loops is discussed, and the results compared with behaviour of standard vertical loops.
