This research reports the processability and mechanical properties of silk resins prepared by hot-pressing followed by hot-rolling and then analyzes their thermal and structural properties. The results show that regenerated silk (RS) resins are better suited for hot-rolling than Eri and Bombyx mori silk resins (untreated silk). When hot-rolling at 160 °C with a 50% of reduction ratio, maximum bending strength and Young’s modulus of RS resin reaches 192 MPa and 10.2 GPa, respectively, after pretreatment by immersion in 40 vol% ethanol, and 229 MPa and 12.5 GPa, respectively, after pretreatment by immersion in boiling water. Increased strength of the material is attributed to the increased content of aggregated strands and intramolecular linking of β sheets (attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) and higher crystallinity (X-ray diffraction analysis). After hot-pressing and hot-rolling, RS resins have a stable decomposition temperature (297 °C).

SiC/Cu composites exhibit low density, low coefficient of thermal expansion and excellent mechanical properties. In this study, Zn of 2 wt. % was added as the sintering activator, and the high volume faction (60%) SiC/Cu composites was fabricated by hot pressing sintering technology. The phase composition and morphology of as-prepare samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) system and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) system. The as-prepared SiC/Cu composites were dense and uniform as well as void free. The results show that SiC/Cu composites can reach excellent mechanical properties of SiC/Cu composites. With the increase of sintering temperature, Vickers hardness and the bending strength of the samples increased obviously and the as-prepared SiC/Cu composites achieved a maximum Vickers hardness and bending strength respectively of 195MPa and 140MPa.

Ti3AlC2/TiAl3 composite was successfully fabricated by ball milling and in-situ reaction/hot-pressing of Ti, Al and graphite powders mixture at 1200 °C and 30 MPa for 30 min. The phase composition and microstructure of the milled powders and synthesized composite were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the mechanical properties and the toughening mechanism of 20%vol Ti3AlC2/TiAl3 composite was also studied. The results show that no new phase is detected during 50 h of milling process. The in-situ synthesized samples are fully dense and composed of 72%vol TiAl3, 24%vol Ti3AlC2 and 4%vol Al2O3/TiC. The Vickers Hardness, three-point bending strength and fracture toughness of the composite is ~5.2 GPa, ~243 MPa and ~4.3 MPa/m1/2, respectively. Analysis of microstructure reveals that crack deflection, crack bridging and delamination of Ti3AlC2 are the main mechanism responsible for the toughening.

The effect of 5 and 10 vol.% addition of zirconia (3Y-TOSOH) to hydroxyapatite of natural origin was investigated. The hydroxyapatite (HAp) material was extracted from the bovine bones by treatment under hydrothermal conditions with distilled water. The pure HAp and HAp-ZrO2 composites were manufactured by pressureless sintering and hot pressing. The reactions taking place in these systems were observed using the X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and dilatometric observations. It was confirmed that the extent of the reactions was essentially dependent on the heat treatment method. Under the hot pressing conditions dense samples containing high fraction of unreacted HAp could be prepared at 1200?C.Mechanical properties of the pure HAp and HAp-ZrO2 composites were also investigated. Zirconia inclusions lead to the increased strength, hardness and fracture toughness of the composites compared to the pure HAp polycrystalline materials.

AlN-SiC ceramics were prepared at 1950°C by hot pressing (HP) of AlN/SiC powders in stoichiometric proportion. The sintered product was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were utilized to investigate the morphology characteristics. The results show that AlN-SiC phase is well-developed with a close and lamellar structure. The grains are plate-like with the size of 1-3μm, the thickness of 3-5μm and elongated dimension. The results showed that the products had the density of 99 percent of the theoretical, bending strength of 550-800 MPa and fracture toughness of 5-6 MPa·m1/2. The distribution of AlN-SiC grains is relatively uniform.

The aim of this research was to develop new electrospun membranes (EMs) based on polycaprolactone (PCL) with or without metronidazole (MET)/nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) content. New nHAP with a mean diameter of 34 nm in length was synthesized. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) were used for structural characterization of precursors and EMs. The highest mechanical properties (the force at maximum load, Young’s modulus and tensile strength) were found for the PCL membranes, and these properties decreased for the other samples in the following order: 95% PCL + 5% nHAP > 80% PCL + 20% MET > 75% PCL + 5% nHAP + 20% MET. The stiffness increased with the addition of 5 wt.% nHAP. The SEM images of EMs showed randomly oriented bead-free fibers that generated a porous structure with interconnected macropores. The fiber diameter showed values between 2 and 16 µm. The fiber diameter increased with the addition of nHAP filler and decreased when MET was added. New EMs with nHAP and MET could be promising materials for guided bone regeneration or tissue engineering.

AbstractThe aims of the present study were to synthesize the intercalated kaolinite samples with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), glutamic acid (GA), succinimide (SIM), cetylpyridiniumchloride (CPC), and hexadecyltrimethylammoniumchloride (HDTMA+); to characterize by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), and to determine the hemocompatibility and the cytotoxic effects of the intercalated kaolinite nanoclays on human lymphocytes. It was found that the intercalation with DMSO did not cause any decrease in cell viability until its maximum concentration (500 µg/mL), however, the intercalation with SIM, CPC, and (HDTMA+) causd important decreases in lymphocyte viabilities. It was determined that no significant decrease was observed in protein content of the lymphocyte cells exposed to the kaolinite nanoclays except the ones intercalated with SIM. Furthermore, the pristine kaolinite nanoclays which were intercalated with DMSO, GA, and SIM exhibited high hemocompatibility and the nanoclays intercalated with CPC and (HDTMA+) were highly hemocompatibile for the amounts below 125 and 500 µg/mL, respectively. All the results of this work can serve for the human risk assesment of intercalated nanoclays.

A glass-ceramic belonging to the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2(CAS) system with different composition of spodumene and doping the Li2O with amount between 0~2.5 % (mass fraction) were prepared by onestage heat treatment, under sintering and crystallization temperature at 1120 °C for two hours. In this paper, differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry and bending strength test were employed to investigate the microstructure and properties of all samples. β-wollastonite crystals were identified as the major crystalline phases, and increasing Li2O was found to be benefit for the crystallization and tiny crystalline phases remelting, resulting in the content of major crystalline phases increased first and then decreased with increasing the expense of spodumene. Meanwhile, the crystal size can be positively related with the content of Li2O. The preferable admixed dosage of spodumene can be obtained, besides the strength of glass-ceramics can be more than 90 MPa.

Over the years, various types of techniques have been used for the synthesis of nanocomposites. In this work, melamine-based polyamide (PA) was synthesized using a one-pot polycondensation method under mild conditions. carboxyl graphene (CG)/PA nanocomposites (CGMPA) were prepared by CG nanofiller loadings of 1, 3, and 5 wt.% via delamination/adsorption approach. The prepared CGMPA nanocomposites were characterized using different analyses, such as Fourier transform infrared techniques (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The effects of the CG on the thermal properties of the CGMPA nanocomposites were significant. The results showed that the melting temperature (Tm) of neat PA and CGMPA were increased from 378°C to 393°C suggested better dispersion of CG in PA matrix. The decomposition temperature of PA was increased from 451°C to 463°C in CGMPA nanocomposites indicates the better thermal stability of PA matrix by addition of CG.

The main purpose of this work was to determine the effect of the powder composition on the microstructure and properties of iron-based sinters used as a matrix in diamond tools. The Fe-Cu-Ni sinters obtained from a mixture of ground powders were used for experiments. The influence of manufacturing process parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of sinters was investigated. Sintering was performed using hot-pressing technique in a graphite mould. The investigations of obtained sinters included: density, hardness, static tensile test, X-ray diffraction analysis, microstructure and fracture surface observations. The obtained results indicate that the produced sinters have good plasticity and relatively high hardness.
