There are considerable resource reuse and environmental concerns regarding SiC sludge (SiCS) that results from cutting silicon ingots into wafers. In the current study, the effect of the Na2SiO3 solution/sodium hydroxide solution (NS/SS) mass ratio and SiCS amount on metakaolin geopolymers was found during geopolymerization system performance. The results indicate that while NS/SS ratio was relatively low, increasing the NaOH content resulted in a sufficient amount of OH− in the system to increase the solubility and hinder polycondensation, as indicated by the bulk density and setting-time results; since the polycondensation was inhibited, the mechanical strength was reduced. This study demonstrated that a geopolymer can be formed from a substitution of 10% SiCS and with an NS/SS ratio of 1.6, and that this geopolymer is a feasible material.

Production of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) requires huge quantity of natural resources and energy and it releases large amount of carbon - di - oxide to the environment. Therefore, enormous studies have been carried out throughout the world to establish geopolymer as an alternative binder material for the replacement of OPC to protect the environment. This study intends to explore the effects of alkaline solution on the properties of geopolymer produced with ground granulated blast furnace slag. Properties such as Standard consistency, setting time of slag based geopolymer paste has been determined using Vicat’s apparatus (according to the guidelines given by Indian Standards for OPC). In order to determine the effects of alkaline solution on the properties of geopolymers, the concentration of sodium hydroxide solution has been varied from 6M to 16M and the ratio of sodium silicate solution to sodium hydroxide solution is also varied from 1.0 to 2.0. Results indicate higher standard consistency and significant less setting time for slag based geopolymer paste than that of OPC paste. Compressive strength of the geopolymer paste and mortar cube samples, cured in ambient conditions till the day of testing, is increasing with the increase of the concentration of sodium hydroxide solution. Highest compressive strength is obtained for the samples prepared with alkaline solution having the ratio of sodium silicate solution to sodium hydroxide solution as 1.5. But when the concentration of sodium hydroxide solution is beyond 14M, decreasing trend in compressive strength is observed.

The sodium salt of 4-amino-3-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid (O-nitroaniline-p-sulfonic acid) has been prepared by the action of dilute sodium hydroxide solution on ethyl [(4-chlorosulfonyl-2-nitro)- phenyllcarbamate. Central to this synthesis is the finding that the N-ethoxycarbonyl group, when located ortho to a nitro group (but not to a bromo group), is readily removed by dilute sodium hydroxide solution.

Avaliou-se a produção de celulases e xilanase de Aspergillus niger IZ9, crescido sobre bagaço de cana, quimicamente tratado, como substrato. Os tratamentos foram: solução de hidróxido de sódio a 4%, e solução de hidróxido de sódio a 4%, ácido fosfórico p.a. e vapor. A produção das enzimas celulolíticas (celulase total, endoglicanase e ­glicosidase) e xilanase foi observada nos bagaços tratados e nãotratado. O tratamento com solução de hidróxido de sódio a 4% promoveu maior indução de síntese da maioria das enzimas, com exceção de ­glicosidase, a qual apresentou produção semelhante para os bagaços tratados quimicamente. Abstract It was evaluated the production of cellulases and xylanase by Aspergillus niger IZ09 grown in a substrate consisted of chemically treated sugarcane bagasse. The treatments were: 4% sodium hydroxide solution and 4% sodium hydroxide solution, phosphoric acid and steam. The production of the cellulolytic enzymes (total cellulase, endoglycanase and B.CEPPA, Curitiba, v. 18, n. 1, jan./jun.2000 67 ­glucosidase) and xylanase was observed in the treated and nontreated bagasses. The treatment with 4% sodium hydroxide solution promoted a greater induction of the synthesis of the majority of the enzymes, with exception of ­glucosidase, which showed similar production for both chemically treated bagasses.
