Using the methods of electric arc melting, intermediate heat treatments, and consecutive intensive plastic deformation, a Ti–Nb–Zr alloy wire with a diameter of 1200 μm was obtained with a homogeneous chemical and phase (β-Ti body-centered crystal lattice) composition corresponding to the presence of superelasticity and shape memory effect, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Perhaps the wire structure is represented by grains with a nanoscale diameter. For the wire obtained after stabilizing annealing, the proof strength Rp0.2 is 635 MPa, tensile strength is 840 MPa and Young’s modulus is 22 GPa, relative elongation is 6.76%. No toxicity was detected. The resulting wire is considered to be promising for medical use.

Combined methods to obtain ultra-fine grain (UFG) α-brass samples are proposed. Severe plastic deformation followed by recrystallization was conducted, where multiple rolling and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were employed. Recrystallization was accomplished by heat-treatment after the severe plastic deformation, and the grain size after the severe plastic deformation was decreased. By multiple rolling, plates with thickness of 0.1 mm and grain size of 1.0 μm were obtained. By ECAP process, square bar with cross-section of 6 mm × 6 mm and minimum grain size of 4.1 μm was obtained. The 0.2 % proof strength, ultimate tensile strength, and fatigue limit were increased with the value of inverse square root of grain size (Hall-Petch relationship). Then, the 0.2 % proof strength of UFG brass was tenfold, the ultimate tensile strength and the fatigue limit were two fold increases from the conventional α-brass. Because of the high strength, the scatter of fatigue strength of UFG brass was large, which reflects the sensitivity to defects in material.

In this study, Fe-25Mn-xAl-8Ni-C alloys (x = 10 wt.%, 11 wt.%, 12 wt.%, 13 wt.%) were prepared by a vacuum arc melting method, and the microstructure of this series of alloys and the in situ tensile deformation behavior were studied. The results showed that Fe-25Mn-xAl-8Ni-C alloys mainly contained austenite phase with a small amount of NiAl compound. With the content of Al increasing, the amount of austenite decreased while the amount of NiAl compound increased. When the Al content increased to 12 wt.%, the interface between austenite and NiAl compound and austenitic internal started to precipitate k-carbide phase. In situ tensile results also showed that as the content of Al increased, the alloy elongation decreased gradually, and the tensile strength first increased and then decreased. When the Al content was up to 11 wt.%, the elongation and tensile strength were 2.6% and 702.5 MPa, respectively; the results of in situ tensile dynamic observations show that during the process of stretching, austenite deformed first, and crack initiation mainly occurred at the interface between austenite and NiAl compound, and propagated along the interface, resulting in fracture of the alloy.

To improve the loose structure and serious porosity of (Al–Zn–Mg–Cu) 7075 aluminum alloy laser-welded joints, aging treatment, double-sided ultrasonic impact treatment (DSUIT), and a combination of aging and DSUIT (A–DSUIT) were used to treat joints. In this experiment, the mechanism of A–DSUIT on the microstructure and properties of welded joints was analyzed. The microstructure of the welded joints was observed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The hardness and tensile properties of the welded components under the different processes were examined via Vickers hardness test and a universal tensile testing machine. The results showed that, after the aging treatment, the dendritic structure of the welded joints transformed into an equiaxed crystal structure. Moreover, the residual tensile stress generated in the welding process was weakened, and the hardness and tensile strength were significantly improved. After DSUIT, a plastic deformation layer of a certain thickness was generated from the surface downward, and the residual compressive stress was introduced to a certain depth of the joint. However, the weld zone unaffected by DSUIT still exhibited residual tensile stress. The inner microhardness of the joint surface improved; the impact surface hardness was the largest and gradually decreased inward to the weld zone base metal hardness, with a small improvement in the tensile strength. Compared with the single treatment process, the microstructural and mechanical properties of the welded joint after A–DSUIT were comprehensively improved. The microhardness and tensile strength of the welded joint reached 200 HV and 615 MPa, respectively, for an increase of 45.8% and 61.8%, respectively. Observation of the fractures of the tensile specimens under the different treatment processes showed that the fractures before the aging treatment were mainly ductile fractures while those after were mainly brittle fractures. After DSUIT of the welded joints, a clear and dense plastic deformation layer was observed in the fracture of the tensile specimens and effectively improved the tensile properties of the welded joints. Under the EBSD characterization, the larger the residual compressive stress near the ultrasonic impact surface, the smaller the grain diameter and misorientation angle, and the lower the texture strength. Finally, after A–DSUIT, the hardness and tensile properties improved the most.

AbstractTwo model aluminium-magnesium alloys, containing 3 and 7.5 wt.% of Mg, were subjected to plastic deformation by means of hydrostatic extrusion (HE). Two degrees of deformation were imposed by two subsequent reductions of the diameter. Microstructural analysis and tensile tests of the materials in the initial state and after deformation were performed. For both materials, HE extrusion resulted in the deformation of the microstructure—formation of the un-equilibrium grain boundaries and partition of the grains. What is more, HE resulted in a significant increase of tensile strength and decrease of the elongation, mostly after the first degree of deformation.

Austempered ductile iron (ADI) is an advanced cast iron material that has a broad field of application and, among others, it is used in contact and for conveyance of fluids. However, it is noticed that in contact with some fluids, especially water, ADI material becomes brittle. The most significant decrease is established for the elongation. However, the influence of water and the cause of this phenomenon is still not fully understood. For that reason, in this paper, the influence of different water concentrations in ethyl alcohol on the mechanical properties of ADI materials was studied. The test was performed on two different types of ADI materials in 0.2, 4, 10, and 100 vol.% water concentration environments, and in dry condition. It was found that even the smallest concentration of water (0.2 vol.%) causes formation of the embrittled zone at fracture surface. However, not all mechanical properties were affected equally and not all water concentrations have been critical. The highest deterioration was established in the elongation, followed by the ultimate tensile strength, while the proof strength was affected least.

Usual static recrystallization treatment and a method to provide intense plastic deformation, ARB namely Accumulative Roll-Bonding, have been applied to two beta type titanium alloys, i.e. Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr and Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al. Microstructural change as well as work-hardening behavior was examined as a function of plastic strain. Both the work-hardening rate and the hardness at the initial as-hot-rolled state were smaller in the Ti-Nb-Ta-Zr alloy than in the Ti-V-Cr-Sn-Al alloy. Recrystallized grains of 14μm in size were obtained by the usual static recrystallization treatment, which was significantly smaller than that of the starting as-hot-rolled plate of 38μm. No significant change other than flattening and elongating of the original grains was found in the optical microscopic scale. It was revealed, however, from a TEM observation combined with selected area diffraction technique that geometric dynamic recrystallization occurred in the Ti-Nb-Ta-Zr alloy deformed at room temperature by a true strain of 5, resulting in an ultra-fine-grained microstructure where the grain size was roughly estimated to be about 100nm.

The effects of Gd, Y content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-Gd-Y-Nd-Zr alloy were investigated using hardness measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and uniaxial tensile testing. The results indicate that the alloys in as-cast condition mainly consist of α-Mg matrix and non-equilibrium eutectic Mg5.05RE (RE = Gd, Y, Nd). After solution treatment, the non-equilibrium eutectics dissolved into the matrix but some block shaped RE-rich particles were left at the grain boundaries and within grains. These particles are especially Y-rich and deteriorate the mechanical properties of the alloys. Both the compositions of the eutectic and the block shaped particle were independent of the total Gd, Y content of the alloys, but the number of the particles increases as the total Gd, Y content increases. The ultimate tensile strength increases as the total Gd, Y content decreases. A Mg-5.56Gd-3.38Y-1.11Nd-0.48Zr alloy with the highest ultimate tensile strength of 280 MPa and an elongation of 1.3% was fabricated. The high strength is attributed to the age hardening behavior and the decrease in block shaped particles.
