This paper reports and discusses an experimental comparison of metal specimens for impact strength research of adhesive connections with different shapes of the upper element. The top element of the specimen of the cuboid shape was replaced with a disc-shaped element. The experimental investigations were supplemented with dynamic numerical calculations of the tested cases. The results of the experimental studies indicate that the material applied to the produce of the top element of the block specimen deformed plastically as a result of applying the load, which further hinders the interpretation of already problematic investigation results. The numerical analysis confirms exceeding the yield point, by stresses, of the material that the specimen elements were made of. Modified specimens were characterized by only little greater repeatability of test results and greater impact strength caused by plastic deformations of the cylindrical specimen element.

The paper aims to design a concrete against repetitive impact and abrasion resistance. Macro/micro steel fibers and two types of crushed stone based on limestone and corundum as aggregate were used in concrete mixtures. Impact test device has been modified, designed and used for impact strength testing of concrete. The usability of the plate creep test in determining the impact strength of concrete was also investigated. According to the test results, a high correlation was found between the abrasion, impact resistance tests and the creep test.

This present study has been re-established to investigate failure mode and resistance characteristics of the PC/ABS blends and their ABS constituents under impact for a range of rubber contents. This present study has still been experimentally performed under an instrumented-drop weight impact test (DWIT) at a room temperature. It has been finally revealed that with a particular size of rubber particle, content of rubber significantly influenced impact failure modes and impact resistances of the PC/ABS blends and their ABS constituents as well. The test results showed that impact strength of the blends was improved about 23.22% and 155.33% due to increase in content of rubber up to 15 wt% and 20 wt%, respectively. There was also found that an increase in impact toughness of the blends for 57.48% and 239.23% was due to increase in content of rubber up to 15 wt% and 20 wt%, respectively. Whilst, impact strength of the ABS was improved about 392.98% and 190.12% due to increase in content of rubber up to 15 wt% and 20 wt%, respectively. An increase in impact toughness of the ABS for 308.20% and 172.56% was due to increase in content of rubber up to 15 wt% and 20 wt%, respectively.

The conditions of adhesive connections testing can significantly affect the recorded findings. The standards, under which the investigations are conducted, do not take into account numerous factors that can greatly influence the outcome of the tests. Moreover, the research parameters in the standards are not specified. It is not defined in what manner their change, or any failure to comply with the standards, will affect test results. This article presents the results of experimental research, completed with numerical simulations, designed to test to what extent the recorded impact strength of adhesive connections is affected by the stiffness of the test stand, and the speed and energy of the impactor. In the experimental research, the authors used block samples whose substrates were made of an aluminum alloy. The elements of the samples were bonded by means of three different epoxy adhesives. The models used in numerical calculations were built on the basis of the real dimensions of the specimens used in this experimental research. As a result of the performed tests and conducted calculations, it was found that the use of test stands of lesser stiffness resulted in an increased registered impact strength due to an increased energy value of elastic deformations.

AbstractThis paper presents experimental studies on the optimization of air–water flow in an airlift pump. Airlift pumps use compressed gas to verticall transport liquids and slurries. Due to the lack of theoretical equations for designing and predicting flow regimes, experimental investigations must be carried out to find the best condition to operate an airlift pump at high efficiency. We used a new air injection system and different submergence ratios to evaluate the output of a simple pump for vertical displacement of water in an underground mine. The tests were carried out in a new device with 5.64 m height and 10.2 cm circular riser pipe. Three air-jacket pipes, at different gas flows in the range of 0.002–0.09 m3/s were investigated with eight submergence ratios. It was found that with the same air flow rate, the most efficient flow of water was achieved when an air jacket with 3 mm diameter holes was used with a submergence ratio between 0.6 and 0.75. In addition, a comparison of practical results with two theoretical models proposed by other investigators showed that neither was able to accurately predict airlift performance in air–water flow mode.

This paper presents the findings of experimental studies of the physical and mechanical properties of wood-filled composites based on polylactide (PLA) and vegetable filler in the form of wood flour (WF) thermally modified at 200-240 °C. It also reveals the dependence of the tensile strength, impact strength, bending elastic modulus, and density of composites on the amount of wood filler and the temperature of its thermal pre-modification. We established that an increase in the concentration of the introduced filler and the degree of its heat treatment results in a decrease of the tensile strength, impact strength and density of composite materials, while with a lower binder content, thermal modification at 200 °C has a positive effect on bending elastic modulus. We also found that 40 % content of a wood filler heated to 200 °C is sufficient to maintain relatively high physical and mechanical properties of composite materials. With a higher content of a wood filler, the cost can be reduced but the quality of products made of this material may significantly deteriorate. However, depending on the application and the life cycle of this product, it is possible to develop a formulation that includes a high concentration of filler.

Impact strength data is a noteworthy factor for designing airport pavements, civilian and military structures etc and it is ought to be modelled precisely. In order to achieve an appropriate modelling data, it is important to select a suitable estimation method. One such commonly used statistical tool is the two parameter Weibull distribution for modelling impact failure strength accurately besides the variations in test results. This study statistically commandsthe variations in the impact failure strength (number of blows to induce failure) of fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) subjected to drop hammer test. Subsequently, a four-different novel method for the computation of Weibull parameter (Shape parameter) based on the earlier researchers test results has been proposed. The accuracy of the proposed four novel method is demonstrated by comparing with power density method and verified with goodness of fit test. Finally, the impact failure strength of FRC is offered in terms of reliability. The proposed four NEPFM is very suitable and efficient to compute the shape parameter in impact failure strength applications.

A new Japanese nuclear regulation involves estimating the possible damage to plant structures due to intentional aircraft impact. The effect of aircraft impact needs to be considered in the existing nuclear power plants. The structural damage and fuel dispersion behavior after aircraft impact into plant structures can be evaluated using finite element analysis (FEA). FEA needs validated experimental data to determine the reliability of the results. In this study, an analysis method was validated using a simple model such as a cylindrical tank. Numerical simulations were conducted to evaluate the impact and dispersion behavior of a water-filled cylindrical tank. The simulated results were compared with the test results of the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT). The simulations were carried out using a multipurpose FEA code LS-DYNA®. The cylindrical tank was modeled using a shell element, and the tank water was modeled using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) elements. First, two analysis models were used to evaluate the effect of the number of SPH elements. One had about 300,000 SPH elements and the other had 37,000 SPH elements. The cylindrical tank ruptured in the longitudinal direction after crashing into a rigid wall, and the filled water dispersed. There were few differences in the simulated results when using different numbers of SPH elements. The VTT impact test was simulated with an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) element to consider the air drag. The analytical dispersion pattern and history of dispersion velocity ratio agreed well with the impact test results.

Investigation of the influence of the peculiarities of raw material composition and structure of traditional and innovative linen textile materials on their hygienic properties. Theoretical and experimental investigations are based on the main positions of textile materials science. In experimental studies, modern standardized methods for determining the hygienic properties of textile materials were used, as well as techniques specially developed taking into account the peculiarities of the operating conditions of underwear. The peculiarities of the operating conditions and the basic functions of hospital underwear were determined. The comparative analysis of hygienic properties of traditional and modern fabrics for underwear was carried out. Using the standardized and the developed methods, adapted to the peculiarities of the conditions of use of the products, the indicators characterizing the processes of water absorption of the materials were experimentally determined. On the basis of the obtained values of quality indicators, a comprehensive assessment of the ability of materials to transfer moisture and air, with the calculation of the arithmetic complex quality index was done. This allowed to determine the material that is optimal in properties, which provides thermophysiological comfort when operating hospital underwear. Using the developed methods, which take into account the specifics of the operating conditions, a comparative analysis of the hygienic properties of traditional and innovative materials for underwear was carried out. A new range of textile materials for underwear has been proposed, taking into account the peculiarities of the operational situation of consumption.
