The oxidation and erosion of atomic oxygen are considered to be the most dangerous environmental factors for materials exposed to the aerospace environment. In order to investigate the effect of atomic oxygen on the lubricating film and improve the tribological properties, MoS2–WS2 composite film was prepared by the sputtering technique. The film structure and mechanical behavior were characterized and their vacuum tribological properties were evaluated by a friction tester. The composite film possessed better atomic oxygen (AO) resistance than pure film because of the dense structure. The tribological performance of composite film was different under the conditions after AO-irradiation and sliding and during AO-irradiation. After AO-irradiation, the tribological properties of composite film were similar to those before AO-irradiation. However, high friction noise, wear rate, and reduced wear duration were observed for the composite film under the AO-irradiation/friction process because of the continuous damage of the lubricating film due to the AO-irradiation. The addition of 16 at.% WS2 to the MoS2-based film changed the composite film structure and improved the oxidation resistance of the film, making the composite film exhibit better tribological performance than pure MoS2.

Overbased calcium sulfonate complex greases have excellent friction and wear properties and have been widely used in metallurgy and mining equipment. The effects and tribological performance of molybdenum dialkydithiocarbamate (MoDTC) and ionic liquid 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([C2OHMim][NTf2]), 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-hexylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([C2OHHim][NTf2s]), added in overbased calcium sulfonate complex grease as additives were investigated by using reciprocating ball-on-disk sliding friction tester. The results showed that the two kinds of additives with a certain range of concentration could improve the tribological properties of greases.

Mesocarbon microbead–silicon carbide (MCMB–SiC) composites with 0–30 wt % MCMBs were prepared by pressureless sintering (PLS) method at 2200 °C in Ar. The microstructure and tribological properties of the prepared composites were investigated. The results show that there was a finer grain size of SiC with the increase in MCMB content because MCMBs hinder the growth of SiC grains. The hardness of the composites decreased with increasing MCMB content, whereas the fracture toughness fluctuated showing a complex trend. The tribological properties of the composites under dry friction conditions were evaluated using the pin-on-disk method against a SiC counterpart. We found that the tribological properties of the samples were influenced by the oxide film or lubricating film that formed during the wear process on wear surfaces. Different wear mechanisms were found to be associated with differing MCMB contents.

By simulating emergency braking conditions of mine hoisters, tribological experiments of a mining nonasbestos brake material sliding on E355CC steel friction disc investigated a pad-on-disc friction tester. It is shown that, under combined influence of braking velocity and pressure, the lubricating film and micro-convex-apices on wear surface would have complex physicochemical reactions which make the instant friction coefficient rise gradually while the instant surface temperature rises first and then falls. With the antifriction effect from lubricating film and the desquamating of composite materials, the mean friction coefficient decreases first, then rises, and decreases again with the increasing of initial braking velocity. And with the existence of micro-convex-apices and variation from increment ratio of load and actual contacting area, it rises first and then falls with the increasing of braking pressure. However, the mean surface temperature rises obviously with the increasing of both initial braking velocity and braking pressure for growth of transformed kinetic energy. It is considered that the friction coefficient cannot be considered as a constant when designing brake devices for mine hoisters. And special attention should be paid to the serious influence of surface temperature on tribological performance of brake material during emergency braking.

The CVD diamond/diamond-like carbon composite film is fabricated on the WC-Co substrate by depositing a layer of Diamond-like Carbon film on the surface of conventional Micro- or Nano-crystalline diamond film. The hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) method and vacuum arc discharge with a graphite cathode are adopted respectively to deposit the MCD/NCD and DLC films. A variety of characterization techniques, including filed emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and Raman spectroscopy are employed to investigate the surface morphology and atomic bonding state of as-deposited MCD/DLC and NCD/DLC composite film. The results show that both MCD/DLC and NCD/DLC composite films present similar surface morphology with the MCD and NCD films, except for scattering a considerable amount of small-sized diamond crystallites among the grain boundary area. The atomic-bonding state of as-deposited MCD/DLC and NCD/DLC composite films is determined by the top-layered DLC film, which is mainly consisted of amorphous carbon phase and no discernible sp3 characteristic peak can be observed from their Raman spectrum. Furthermore, the tribological properties of as-deposited MCD/DLC and NCD/DLC composite films is examined using a ball-on-plate reciprocating friction tester under both dry sliding and water-lubricating conditions, comparing with conventional DLC, MCD and NCD films. Silicon nitride balls are used as counterpart materials. For the CVD diamond/DLC composite films, the self-lubricating effect of top-layered DLC film is beneficial for suppressing the initial friction peak, as well as shortening the run-in period. The average friction coefficients of MCD/DLC and NCD/DLC composite films during stable sliding period are 0.07 and 0.10 respectively in dry sliding; while under water-lubricating condition, they further decreases to 0.03 and 0.07.

Multilayer reduced graphene oxide (mrGO) was chemically modified by electroless plating of copper on surface to form mrGO-Cu. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis revealed that nano-Cu particles were uniformly dispersed on the surface of mrGO. The mrGO-Cu powders were further utilized as reinforcements for aluminum (Al) matrix and the mrGO-Cu/Al composite was successfully fabricated through clad rolling of milled powder. The tribological properties of the mrGO-Cu/Al composites were explored. The tribological results show that the mrGO-Cu could reduce the friction coefficient and wear loss of mrGO-Cu/Al composites, since the mrGO-Cu participated in lubricating processes due to the formation of a transfer layer on the contact surface. Furthermore, it is found that the composition of mrGO-Cu could significantly influence the tribological properties of the mrGO-Cu/Al composites. The composites with 4% of mrGO-Cu for composites exhibited the best tribological behavior, which transformed from adhesive wear to abrasive wear, due to the formation of a graphite lubricating film.

This article concerns the tribological properties of three selected polymer materials: polyamide PA6, polyethylene PE-HD and polyetheretherketone composite PEEK/BG during sliding against aluminium alloy EN AW-2017A in the presence of hydraulic oil HLP 68. The tests were carried out under contact pressure p of 3.5–11 MPa at ambient temperature T ranging from −20 °C to +20 °C. The dependence of kinetic friction coefficient μk on the two parameters was determined through tribological tests carried out using a pin-on-disc tribometer. A five-level central composite rotatable design (CCRD) was adopted for the experiment. All the test results were statistically analysed. The microhardness of the surface of the polymeric material was measured before and after the friction process. The surface was also examined under SEM. Temperature and contact pressure have been found to have a significant effect on the tribological properties of the tested sliding pairs. Relative to the applied friction conditions, the surfaces after friction showed rather heavy signs of wear.

SrSO4 ceramic was prepared by hot-pressed sintering and its friction behavior was investigated against the Al2O3 ball under the dry sliding condition from room temperature to 800 °C. From room temperature to 400 °C, the tribological properties of SrSO4 ceramic are quite poor with the friction coefficients of 0.65–0.83 and the wear rates of about 10−3 mm3/Nm. With the testing temperature increasing to 600 °C and 800 °C, a brittle to ductile transition of SrSO4 takes place because of the activated slip systems. The friction coefficient and wear rate of SrSO4 ceramic also obviously decrease to 0.37 and about 10−4 mm3/Nm at 800 °C. The significant improvement of the tribological properties is ascribed to the formation of a smooth and continuous SrSO4 lubricating film with excellent ductility and low shear strength at elevated temperature. SrSO4 is considered to be a potential candidate for high-temperature solid lubricant with excellent lubricity.

Nickel-Boron autocatalytic coatings are widely used in several industries to improve mechanical properties of materials such as hardness and wear resistance. Tribological properties were evaluated in Ni-B autocatalytic coatings deposited on AISI/SAE 1018 carbon steel before and after a heat treatment at 450 °C for one hour. Tribological tests were carried out by dry sliding, using a load of 5 N and a sliding speed of 0.012 m/s, in a homemade ball-on-disk tribometer, which followed ASTM G99 standard. According to the tribological evaluation, the heat treatments applied to Ni-B coatings improved their tribological performance. This research corroborates that by applying an adequate heat treatment, hardness and wear resistance of Ni-B coatings can be improved significantly.

In recent years, the efforts to better control friction and wear have focused on surface topography modification through surface texturing. To study the mutual influence of surface roughness and texture features, this paper developed one comprehensive mathematical model of mixed lubrication to study the tribological performance of the rough-textured conjunction. The typical ring-liner conjunction was chosen as the research object. In particular, the effects of skewness and kurtosis were considered based on the non-Gaussian distribution of asperity height. In this way, the influences of non-Gaussian distribution properties and surface texturing on the tribological performance were analyzed. The results show that the influences of skewness and kurtosis on the tribological performance are nontrivial and should not be neglected in the mixed lubrication. Compared to the Gaussian distribution, considering the non-Gaussian distribution can represent the physical rough surfaces more accurately. Surfaces with negative skewness were found to generally result in better tribological properties. Moreover, the tribological performance improved by surface texturing can also be improved or reduced by the effect of skewness and kurtosis. As a result, the optimization of surface texturing should take the effects of roughness parameters into account.
