A mixture of an illitic clay and waste glass was prepared and studied during the sintering process. The illitic clay, from the Liepa deposit (Latvia), and green glass waste (GW) were disintegrated to obtain a homogeneous mixture. The addition of disintegrated GW (5–15 wt% in the mixture) led to a reduction in the intensive sintering temperature, from 900 to 860 °C, due to a significant decrease in the glass viscosity. The addition of GW slightly decreased the intensities of the endo- and exothermic reactions in the temperature range from 20 to 1000 °C due to the reduced concentration of clay minerals. GW reduced the plasticity of the clay and reduced the risk of structural breakage. The increase in sintering temperature from 700 to 1000 °C decreased the apparent porosity and water uptake capacity of the ceramics from 35% and 22%, down to 24% and 13%, respectively. The apparent porosities of all the sintered mixtures showed a decrease of between 6% to 9% after the addition of GW with concentrations from 5 up to 15 wt% respectively, while the water uptake capacities decreased from between 4% and 10%. The addition of GW led to an increase in the apparent density of the ceramic materials, up to 2.2 g/cm3. Furthermore, the compressive strength increased by more than two times, reaching a highest value of 240 MPa after the sintering of the 15 wt% GW-containing mixture at 1000 °C.

The primary motivation of developing ceramic materials using geopolymer method is to minimize the reliance on high sintering temperatures. The ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was added as binder and reinforces the nepheline ceramics based geopolymer. The samples were sintered at 900 °C, 1000 °C, 1100 °C, and 1200 °C to elucidate the influence of sintering on the physical and microstructural properties. The results indicated that a maximum flexural strength of 92 MPa is attainable once the samples are used to be sintered at 1200 °C. It was also determined that the density, porosity, volumetric shrinkage, and water absorption of the samples also affected by the sintering due to the change of microstructure and crystallinity. The IR spectra reveal that the band at around 1400 cm−1 becomes weak, indicating that sodium carbonate decomposed and began to react with the silica and alumina released from gels to form nepheline phases. The sintering process influence in the development of the final microstructure thus improving the properties of the ceramic materials.

This study investigated the properties of lightweight sludge-flyash-clay ceramic by different sintering temperature. Different ratios of dry sewage sludge and fly ash with 50 wt% of clay were mixed and pressed into raw pellets. After drying and preheating treatment, the raw pellets were sintered at temperatures ranging from 1050 to 1150 °C, in 25 °C increments for 10 min. The physical properties (bulk density, grain density, water absorption and rate of expansion) were the indexes used to determine the technical parameters for the preparation of lightweight sludge-fly ash ceramic pellets. The results suggested that temperature was the key control factor of sintering process, and 1150 °C was the starting point of the bloating reaction. In the case of a small fraction in the raw material configuration, the mass ratios of sludge to fly-ash had little effect on the properties.

Clay ceramic materials exposed to a marine environment may be subjected to complete degradation due to the presence of chloride salts in the air. The exposition allows the chloride to penetrate in structural pores causing an internal expansion, which eventually split the ceramic apart. In open air, the solar radiation as well as the rain and wind contribute to accelerate the degradation process. In the present work the laboratory assisted degradation of clay ceramics incorporated with a granite residue from ornamental stone processing was evaluated by synthetic seawater aggression according to standard procedure. The amount of incorporated residues, up to 10 wt % and the ceramic firing temperature, up to 900°C, were variable conditions statistically analyzed by factorial planning. Degradation wetting-drying tests were conducted up to 6 months. The results showed that the linear shrinkage of the residue-free ceramics do not stabilize during the test period for any firing temperature. By contrast, the residue-incorporated ceramics tend to stabilize after 4 months. In addition, a decrease in water absorption and flexural strength was observed in same speciemens.

Nanoparticles prepared by the coprecipitation method were used as raw materials to fabricate Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) ceramics by air pressureless sintering. The synthesized YIG precursor was calcinated at 900–1100 °C for 4 h in air. The influences of the calcination temperature on the phase and morphology of the nanopowders were investigated in detail. The powders calcined at 1000–1100 °C retained the pure YIG phase. YIG ceramics were fabricated by sintering at 1200–1400 °C for 10 h, and its densification behavior was studied. YIG ceramics prepared by air sintering at 1250 °C from powders calcinated at 1000 °C have the highest in-line transmittance in the range of 1000-3000 nm. When the sintering temperature exceeds 1300 °C, the secondary phase appears in the YIG ceramics, which may be due to the loss of oxygen during the high-temperature sintering process, resulting in the conversion of Fe3+ into Fe2+.

The (1–x)Ca0.61La0.26TiO3-xNd(Mg0.5Ti0.5)O3 [(1–x)CLT-xNMT, x = 0.35~0.60] ceramics were prepared via microwave sintering. The effects of sintering temperature and composition on the phase formation, microstructure, and microwave dielectric properties were investigated. The results show that the microwave sintering process requires a lower sintering temperature and shorter sintering time of (1–x)CLT-xNMT ceramics than conventional heating methods. All of the (1–x)CLT-xNMT ceramics possess a single perovskite structure. With the increase of x, the dielectric constant (ε) shows a downward trend; the quality factor (Qf) drops first and then rises significantly; the resonance frequency temperature coefficient (τf) keeps decreasing. With excellent microwave dielectric properties (ε = 51.3, Qf = 13,852 GHz, τf = −1.9 × 10−6/°C), the 0.65CLT-0.35NMT ceramic can be applied to the field of mobile communications.

The replacement of common acrylic derivatives by biodegradable materials in the formulation of superabsorbent materials would lessen the associated environmental impact. Moreover, the use of by-products or biowastes from the food industry that are usually discarded would promote a desired circular economy. The present study deals with the development of superabsorbent materials based on a by-product from the meat industry, namely plasma protein, focusing on the effects of a freeze-drying stage before blending with glycerol and eventual injection molding. More specifically, this freeze-drying stage is carried out either directly on the protein flour or after its solubilization in deionized water (10% w/w). Superabsorbent materials obtained after this solubilization-freeze-drying process display higher Young’s modulus and tensile strength values, without affecting their water uptake capacity. As greater water uptake is commonly related to poorer mechanical properties, the proposed solubilization-freeze-drying process is a useful strategy for producing strengthened hydrophilic materials.

In order to investigate the effects of TiN content on Al2O3/TiN ceramic material (ATN), the ATN ceramic materials were prepared of TiN content in 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% in the condition of hot press sintering. The sintering temperature is 1700°C, the sintering press is 32MPa, and the holding time are 5min, 10min, 15min. The effects of TiN content on mechanical properties and microstructure of ATN ceramic materials were investigated by analyzing the bending strength, hardness, fracture toughness. The results show that ATN50 has the best mechanical property, its bending strength is 659.41MPa, vickers hardness is 13.79GPa, fracture toughness is 7.06MPa·m1/2. It is indicated that the TiN content has important effect on microstructure and mechanical properties of ATN ceramic materials.

The use of glass residues for the reduction of firing temperature of ceramic materials products has become an attractive alternative. For pressed or extruded products, such as tiles and bricks, the use of glass is sufficiently simple, since only milling and mixing to the industrial mass batch in partial substitution of conventional fluxes are necessary. However, in slip casting products, such as china and porcelains, the glass presence destabilizes the casting slip. This is the motivation of this work. Different types of dispersants and their influence on the properties of slips containing glass waste were evaluated. The experimental results showed that the use of conventional dispersant (sodium silicate) is not adequate. The stabilization of slips was possible only with organic dispersants. Therefore, the factors that determine the success or failure of dispersants were also analyzed.
