In the present work, alumina (Al2O3) foam was prepared by the replica method where a polyurethane (PU) foam (30 pores per inch (ppi)) template was impregnated with a 60 wt.% Al2O3 suspension. Sintered Al2O3 foam was used as substrate for the deposition of sol-gel derived titania (TiO2) film using dip coating. For the preparation of TiO2 sol, titanium(IV) isopropoxide (Ti-iPrOH) was used as the precursor. The common problem of qualification and quantification of a crystalline coating on a highly porous 3D substrate with an uneven surface was addressed using a combination of different structural characterization methods. Using Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD) and synchrotron Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction (GIXRD) on bulk and powdered Al2O3 foam and TiO2-coated Al2O3 foam samples, it was determined Al2O3 foam crystallizes to corundum and coating to anatase, which was also confirmed by Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) revealed the structural and microstructural properties of the substrate and coating. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were used to clarify the evolution of the porous microstructure. The Al2O3-TiO2 composite was evaluated as a photocatalyst candidate for the degradation of the micropollutant medication memantine. The degradation rate was monitored using a light-emitting diode (LED) lamp operating at electromagnetic (EM) wavelength of 365 nm. The photocatalytic activity of sol-gel-derived TiO2 film immobilized on the Al2O3 foam was compared with commercially available TiO2 nanoparticles, P25-Degussa, in the form of a suspension. The levels of memantine were monitored by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry (HPLC–MS/MS). The efficiency and rate of the memantine photodegradation by suspended TiO2 nanoparticles is higher than the TiO2-coated Al2O3 foam. But, from the practical point of view, TiO2-coated Al2O3 foam is more appropriate as a valuable photocatalytic composite material.

Dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) nanoparticles, also known as brushite, are considered an important bioceramic compound. In this study, brushite was prepared from Moroccan phosphogypsum (PG) using a new sol-gel method. A two-step technique undergoes the synthesis of brushite, the preparation of anhydrite from PG followed by adding phosphoric acid in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The morphology, the chemical composition, and the crystallites size were obtained using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM-EDAX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. According to the Debye-Scherrer equation, these characterization methods indicated that the synthesized brushite was highly pure according to the Ca/P ratio of 1.14 and an average crystallites size estimated at 66 nm. These results proved that the brushite was successfully synthesized from Moroccan phosphogypsum.

The synthesis of Ni doped titania (TiO2) nanoparticles were achieved via simple novel sol gel technique, in which Titanium-n-butoxide and NiCl2 were taken as precursors. Effect of different wt% of dopant in TiO2 was studied on photocatalytic degradation of Aniline blue and Toluidine Blue. The study suggested the increased photocatalytic degradation with increased time duration. The synthesized samples were analyzed by surface electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction studies. The antibacterial activity was investigated against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus bacteriae. Studies revealed that on increasing the dopant concentration, the diameter of zone of inhibition also increased upto 1.5 wt%.

Thin films in the system (1 - x) PbTiO3−xLa2/3TiO3 were prepared by the sol-gel and dip-coating methods. Phases deposited in the films and the lattice parameters as a function of the composition were investigated by the x-ray diffraction method. The solid solutions with a perovskite structure were formed as a single phase with x up to 0.9. For the composition of x = 1.0, metastable La-Ti-O perovskite phase with a small amount of the impurity phase, La2Ti2O7, was obtained. Simulation of x-ray diffraction patterns based on the defect structure model shows that the structure of the La-Ti-O perovskite phase includes randomly distributed cation vacancies at the A-site, namely (La2/3□1/3)TiO3.

A novel nano-TiO2 coating is prepared by vacuum dip-coating TiO2 sol–gel onto the anodized aluminum surface. The particles of TiO2 anatase is filled into the Al2O3 nano-pores formed by anodization. The structure and composition of the coatings are characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The preponderant bacterium is identified as Pseudomonas lindanilytica strain IPL-1 through analysis of the sequences of S16 nRNA gene segment. In addition, the electrochemical results show that the TiO2 coatings significantly reduce the corrosion rate of Al substrates. The UV reflection spectroscopy is used to determine and analyze that the nano-TiO2 coatings could improve the light photo catalytic activity which decreases microbial influencing corrosion acceleration inhibition (MICI).

A sol-gel method was employed to synthesise pure titanium dioxide (TiO2) and surfactant assisted TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). The effect of novel surfactant viz., Lauryl lactyl lactate on photocatalytic properties of TiO2 was studied. TiO2 NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance spectra (DRS), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), and Brunauer – Emmet - Teller (BET) surface area. Anatase phase of TiO2 was confirmed by X-Ray diffraction pattern and the crystallite size was between 9–19 nm. Addition of surfactant improved the BET surface area, surface defects, while the agglomeration of particles was reduced. DRS results revealed that the addition of surfactant to TiO2 sol induced a red shift of the absorption edge which resulted in the reduction of band gap from 3.23 to 3.21 eV. These physicochemical properties of TiO2 NPs were correlated with photocatalytic degradation of phenol. About 92% of phenol degradation was observed for surfactant assisted TiO2 NPs (SA-TiO2). Salicylic acid and caffeine were also degraded using SA-TiO2 NPs.

LiMn2O4spinel cathode materials have been successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction. Surface of these particles was modified by nanostructured LiFePO4via sol gel dip coating method. Synthesized products were characterized by thermally analyzed thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The results of electrochemical tests showed that the charge/discharge capacities improved and charge retention of battery enhanced. This improved electrochemical performance is caused by LiFePO4phosphate layer on surfaces of LiMn2O4cathode particles.

In this research, N-doped TiO2 (N/TiO2) nanoparticles have been synthesized by a sol-gel method. N/TiO2 nanoparticle has been coated with Ag metal by photochemical method. Triethylamine, N(CH3CH2)3, have been used as precursors of Nitrogen, titanium tetraiso-propoxide (TTIP), Ti[OCH(CH3)2]4, used as precursors of titanium and Ag(NO3)2 used as precursors of Silver in synthesis of these nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activity has been perused for degradation of Methyl Orange (MO) as model of natural pollutants. Synthesized nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, Fourier transform spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive of X-ray spectroscopy and diffuse-reflectance of Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Results illustrated that under both visible and ultraviolet light, N/TiO2 nanoparticles had medium activity but with coating, the activity in each area efficiently improved. The presence of 1.5% Ag coated on N/TiO2 (with 2:1 mole ratio) resulted to the highest activity under visible and Ultraviolet irradiation in the catalyst.

The crystallization behavior and microstructure of Li+-doped TiO2 thin films prepared by sol-gel dip coating were investigated by means of differential themal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystallization apparent activation energy (E) both in the absence and in the presence of Li+ ion was also measured with Kissinger method. As a result the E values of Li+-doped TiO2 thin film were decreased, thus the crystallization of non-crystalline to anatase and antase to rutile was promoted.

The photo-induced effects on sol–gel-based organo TiO2-SiO2 thin layers deposited by the dip-coating technique have been investigated using two very different light sources: A light-emitting diode (LED) emitting in the UV (at 365 nm, 3.4 eV) and an X-ray tube producing 40 keV mean-energy photons. The impact of adding a photo-initiator (2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone-DMPA) on the sol–gel photosensitivity is characterized namely in terms of the photo-induced refractive index measured through M-line spectroscopy. Results show that both silica-titania sol–gel films with or without the photo-initiator are photosensitive to both photon sources. The induced refractive index values reveal several features where slightly higher refractive indexes are obtained for the sol–gel containing the photo-initiator. UV and X-ray-induced polymerization degrees are discussed using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy where the densification of hybrid TiO2-SiO2 layers is related to the consumption of the CH=C groups and to the decomposition of Si-OH and Si-O-CH3 bonds. X-rays are more efficient at densifying the TiO2-SiO2 inorganic and organic network with respect to the UV photons. Hard X-ray photolithography, where no cracks or damages are observed after intense exposition, can be a promising technique to design submicronic-structure patterns on TiO2-SiO2 thin layers for the building of optical sensors.

Nanotubes received great attention because it has a high surface area. In this study, TiO2 nanotubes fabricated via hydrothermal method from  synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles via sol-gel method. Catalysts that have been synthesized later in the characterization by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to obtain the crystal size and crystallinity. Crystal size of TiO2 nanoparticles at a temperature of 450C is 13.78 nm. Then characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) to look at the formation of nanotubes. Characterization of TiO2 nanotubes with TEM shows that the structure of the tubes had already been formed TNTs although the growth has not been perfect. It can be seen from the structure TNTs who tend to be short and yet so irregular.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15408/jkv.v0i0.5036
