The radionuclide cesium (Cs) was solidified using magnesium silicate hydrate (M–S–H) cement. The influence of Cs+ on the reaction of the M–S–H gel system was evaluated by measuring the compressive strength and microscopic properties of the solidified body. By testing the impact resistance, leaching resistance and freeze–thaw resistance of the solidified body, the immobilizing ability of Cs+ by the M–S–H cement was analyzed. Results indicate that Cs+ only slightly affects the reaction process of the M–S–H gel system, and only slows down the transformation rate of Mg(OH)2 into the M–S–H gel to a certain extent. The M–S–H cement exhibits superior performance in solidifying Cs+. Both the leaching rate and cumulative leach fraction at 42 d were considerably lower than the national requirements and better than the ordinary Portland cement-solidified body. The curing effect of the M–S–H cement on Cs+ is mainly physical encapsulation and chemisorption of hydration products.

Magnesium silicate hydrate (M–S–H) cement, formed by reacting MgO, SiO2, and H2O, was used to encapsulate strontium (Sr) radionuclide. Samples were prepared using light-burned magnesium oxide and silica fume, with sodium hexametaphosphate added to the mix water as a dispersant. The performance of the materials formed was evaluated by leach testing and the microstructure of the samples was also characterized. The stabilizing/solidifying effect on Sr radionuclide in the MgO–SiO2–H2O system with low alkalinity is demonstrated in the study. The leaching rate in a standard 42-day test was 2.53 × 10−4 cm/d, and the cumulative 42-day leaching fraction was 0.06 cm. This meets the relevant national standard performance for leaching requirements. Sr2+ was effectively incorporated into the M–S–H hydration products and new phase formation resulted in low Sr leaching being observed.

This paper reports about a nozzle array structure fluidic gyroscope. The gyro used setting sub-nozzle around the main nozzle to inhibit the attenuation which had been caused by the main nozzle jet column spread out and to increase the angular velocity difference of sensitive element in the thermal resistance wire when the jet flow rate had been input, thereby to improve the performance of the jet gyro. The test results showed that: a resolution of better than 0.1°/s nozzle formation jet gyro sensitivity better than 10mv/(0.1°/s), the measurement range is better than ± 60°/s; non-linearity of better than 1%.The impact of the gyroscope impact resistance capability, small size and wide range of applications.

This study is aimed to evaluate the impact performance of cement-based composites which comprise steel fibers and silica fume in the mixes. Material variables include water-cementitious ratio, dosage of silica fume, steel fiber length and dosage. Test results indicate that the impact resistance increase with increasing fiber content and water-cementitious ratio, and with decreasing silica fume content. For a given volume fraction, short fiber performs better than its long counterpart in improving the impact performance. In addition, the combination of silica fume and fibers enhances better impact behavior than individual constituents of silica fume, due to reduced the crack formation and offer the toughness of cement-based composites under impact loadings.

A metal rubber damper was designed for the too large impact response of a product. The impact response of products which bears big shocks with and without metal rubber damper were studied and compared. The damping performance of the metal rubber damper with different pre-compression was tested and studied. The test results show that the metal rubber damper can effectively reduce the impact response of the product in three directions; The damping effect of cylindrical metal rubber damper in the direction of cylinder axis is better than that in the other two axial directions; different pre-compression amounts have great influence on the impact response, so the optimum damping effect is obtained by adjusting the pre-compression amount of the metal rubber damper.

This paper examines the performance of limit orders versus market orders using intraday transaction prices for all stocks listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange over the first three months of 1999. The results indicate that executed limit orders significantly outperform market orders. Moreover, even after including the impact of unfilled limit orders, the unconditional limit orders still perform slightly better than the corresponding market orders. The superior performance of limit orders is consistent with the explanation that limit order traders benefit from the bid-ask bounce driven by liquidity trading in the Taiwan stock market. By replacing the buy and sell prices by the bid-ask average, the superior profitability of limit orders decline significantly.

Quality of surface finishes for beech stairs. The article deals with quality of oil varnish surface finish when compared with a standard polyurethane finish. The manufacturer recommends both surface finishes to be used for stairs. The tested surface finishes were created on beech wood according to producer recommendations. The quality comparison was based on three mechanical properties of the surface finishes: the surface hardness, impact resistance, and resistance to abrasion. The selected properties gave a good indication for suitability of the tested coating materials for stairs. Both surface finishes achieved the same surface hardness – grade of 11, as measured by the pencil scratch test. The impact resistance measured at low drop height (50 and 100 mm) was better for the oil varnish surface than for polyurethane one. At higher drop heights, the impact resistance of both surfaces was the same. The resistance to abrasion of the oil varnish was better than the resistance of the polyurethane one

This study investigated the combine effect of 0.2 % drink cans and steel fibers with volume fractions of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5% and 3% to the mechanical properties and impact resistance of concrete. Hooked-end steel fiber with 30 mm and 0.75 mm length and diameter, respectively was selected for this study.  The drinks cans fiber were twisted manually in order to increase friction between fiber and concrete. The results of the experiment showed that the combination of steel fibers and drink cans fibers improved the strength performance of concrete, especially the compressive strength, flexural strength and indirect tensile strength. The results of the experiment showed that the combination of steel fibers and drink cans fibers improved the compressive strength, flexural strength and indirect tensile strength by 2.3, 7, and 2 times as compare to batch 1, respectively. Moreover, the impact resistance of fiber reinforced concrete has increase by 7 times as compared to non-fiber concretes. Moreover, the impact resistance of fiber reinforced concrete consistently gave better results as compared to non-fiber concretes. The fiber reinforced concrete turned more ductile as the dosage of fibers was increased and ductility started to decrease slightly after optimum fiber dosage was reached. It was found that concrete with combination of 2% steel and 0.2% drink cans fibers showed the highest compressive, split tensile, flexural as well as impact strength.

The main aim of this work was the investigation of the possibility of replacing the heavy metallic meshes applied onto the composite structure in airplanes for lightning strike protection with a thin film of Tuball single-wall carbon nanotubes in the form of ultra-light, conductive paper. The Tuball paper studied contained 75 wt% or 90 wt% of carbon nanotubes and was applied on the top of carbon fibre reinforced polymer before fabrication of flat panels. First, the electrical conductivity, impact resistance and thermo-mechanical properties of modified laminates were measured and compared with the reference values. Then, flat panels with selected Tuball paper, expanded copper foil and reference panels were fabricated for lightning strike tests. The effectiveness of lightning strike protection was evaluated by using the ultrasonic phased-array technique. It was found that the introduction of Tuball paper on the laminates surface improved both the surface and the volume electrical conductivity by 8800% and 300%, respectively. The impact resistance was tested in two directions, perpendicular and parallel to the carbon fibres, and the values increased by 9.8% and 44%, respectively. The dynamic thermo-mechanical analysis showed higher stiffness and a slight increase in glass transition temperature of the modified laminates. Ultrasonic investigation after lightning strike tests showed that the effectiveness of Tuball paper is comparable to expanded copper foil.
