High-viscosity modified asphalt is mainly used as a binder for porous asphalt in China and Japan. In order to meet the demand for using porous asphalt under high temperature condition in Africa, high-viscosity asphalt made from low-grade matrix asphalt, which is commonly used in Africa is investigated. Based on simulation of local climate in Africa, the suitable range of high viscosity additive content for different matrix asphalt was obtained by analyzing dynamic viscosity of the asphalt. Through PG high temperature grading, multi-stress repeated creep, accelerated fatigue, temperature sweep and other tests, changes of high temperature, anti-fatigue and anti-shear indicators before and after modification were compared and analyzed and effects of different matrix asphalt were also studied. Finally, considering engineering requirements, mixing and compaction temperatures of various high-viscosity modified asphalt were determined through study of viscosity-temperature characteristics. This research provides a support for preparation of high-viscosity modified asphalt and porous asphalt mixture by using low grade asphalt. The research achievements can help to guide the material design and application of porous asphalt in Africa and other high temperature areas.

Aiming to evaluate the high-temperature performance of asphalt binders and asphalt mixtures and to investigate the reliability of the standard technical indexes to evaluate the performance of the asphalt, six typically used asphalt types were employed in this study. The standard high-temperature rheological test, the multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) test, and the zero-shear viscosity (ZSV) test were employed to characterize the high-temperature performance and non-Newtonian fluid properties of the asphalt. Meanwhile, the high-temperature performance of the asphalt mixture was evaluated through the rutting tests based on the mixture design of AC-13. In general, the modified asphalt performed better than the unmodified asphalt according to the high-temperature rheological properties tests. The ranking of the six kinds of asphalt was confirmed to be different in various laboratory tests. The test results of the asphalt binders showed that the Tafpack Super- (TPS-) modified asphalt performed best in the MSCR and ZSV tests, while the low-grade asphalt PEN20 had the best technical indexes in the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test. Besides, the relation between the asphalt and the asphalt mixture was analyzed by gray relational analysis (GRA) method. The present rutting indicator G ∗ / sin   δ  and  G ∗ / 1 − sin   δ ⋅   tan   δ − 1 for evaluating the asphalt mixtures’ high-temperature performance might no longer be suitable. The Cross/Williamson model was the most suitable for calculating and fitting the ZSV, which could be used as the key indicator of the high-temperature performance evaluation of the asphalt. This work lays a foundation for the further study of the high-temperature performance evaluation of asphalt binders.

the aging existing in use and construction of bituminous pavement will directly resulting in shortening of the pavement’s service life. It is provide the theoretical basis of the design and construction of the SBS modified asphalt mixture to analyze the influence of aging to the rheological property of SBS modified asphalt under high temperature. The testing for the rheological property of three kinds SBS modified asphalt under high temperature has been finished before and after the aging in construction by Brookfield DV Ⅱ+ type of rotation viscometer. The results indicated that viscosity will be increased and the sensitivity of SBS modified asphalt to viscosity will also be lowered along with increase of aging degree. The testing for the rheological property of three kinds of SBS modified asphalt has been finished before and after aging in usage period by the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). The results shown that G* will be continually increased along with increase of aging degree and this is consistent with change of base asphalt. And this shown that the increase of G* can only come down to oxidation and aging of base asphalt contained in the modified asphalt and also, asphaltene in SBS modified asphalt will be changing in the mode same with that of base asphalt.

Water damage often occurs on porous asphalt pavement during service life because of the well-developed pore structure. Determining the adhesion and adhesion healing properties of high-viscosity modified asphalt (HVMA) under water condition is beneficial to understand the water damage process of porous asphalt. In this study, the modified binder bond strength test was first conducted to investigate the adhesion property and self-healing behavior of HVMA at different conditions. Then, the surface energy test was carried out to further characterize the differences in adhesion property of HVMA. Moreover, the gel permeation chromatography test and fluorescence microscopic test were used to investigate the influence of chemical composition and polymer morphology on the adhesion property of HVMA. Results show that the presence of water reduces the adhesion property of HVMA. The addition of polymers leads to an increasing adhesion strength and a decreasing self-healing ability of HVMA. The self-healing ability of HVMA improves with the increase of temperature, but also shows a decreased trend when the healing time is long at high-temperature water immersion. The effect of polymers on the adhesion property of asphalt has two aspects. First, the swelling of polymers leads to an increasing content of polar heavy components in HVMA, thus enhancing polarity adsorption between asphalt and aggregate. Moreover, a polymer-centered interfacial diffusion layer can be formed during the adsorption of light components, which increases the overlapping area of structural asphalt between adjacent aggregates. This can also improve the adhesion property at the asphalt–aggregate interface.

Strong ultraviolet light and low-temperature are the typical environmental characteristics in high-altitude areas. The performance of SBS-modified asphalt in the above environmental characteristics needs further study. To improve the resistance ultraviolet (UV) ageing and low-temperature performance of copolymer- (SBS-) modified asphalt, an SBS-modified asphalt containing nano-ZnO and nano-TiO2 is proposed. In this paper, nano-ZnO, nano-TiO2, and SBS were used as modifiers with the silane coupling agent (KH-560) as the nanomaterial surface modification. The orthogonal test table was used to analyse the effects of the three modifiers on the physical properties of modified asphalt at different dosages. On this basis, the physical properties, low-temperature properties, and ageing indices (carbonyl index and sulfoxide index) were studied for base asphalt, SBS-modified asphalt, nano-ZnO/SBS-modified asphalt, and nano-ZnO/nano-TiO2/SBS composite-modified asphalt before and after photoaging. The content changes of characteristic elements (Zn and Ti) in the nano-ZnO/nano-TiO2/SBS composite-modified asphalt before and after ageing were studied by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and the UV ageing mechanism was revealed. The results indicate that two nanoparticles show the best compatibility with asphalt after surface modification and can improve the binding ability between SBS and base asphalt. The orthogonal test analysis shows that nano-ZnO has a highly significant effect on the low- and high-temperature performance of the nano-ZnO/nano-TiO2/SBS composite-modified asphalt, and nano-TiO2 has a significant effect on the high-temperature performance. Three optimal composite-modified systems for base asphalt including 4% nano-ZnO/1.5% nano-TiO2/3.2% SBS were proposed and had the best antiaging ability. Compared with the sulfoxide index, the carbonyl index changed most obviously before and after ageing. Additionally, the results reveal that nano-TiO2 has a good absorption effect at a wavelength of 365 nm (ultraviolet light), while nano-ZnO is liable to photolysis, and its activity decreases at this wavelength.

Adding sulphur dilution asphalt modifier SEAM to asphalt mixture is not only a modifier of asphalt mixture, but also an additive of asphalt mixture. When the modifier is added into the asphalt mixture, the road performance of the asphalt mixture can be improved. This paper studies SEAM modified asphalt mixture the Marshall property index, temperature stability, Water stability and fatigue feature in the Laboratory. On the based of the result of the experiment and analysis, SEAM can improve the high temperature stability, Water stability and fatigue feature. But the low temperature stability can’t improve.
