Turbine blisk low cycle fatigue (LCF) is affected by various factors such as heat load, structural load, operation parameters and material parameters; it seriously influences the reliability and performance of the blisk and aeroengine. To study the influence of thermal-structural coupling on the reliability of blisk LCF life, the generalized regression extreme neural network (GRENN) method was proposed by integrating the basic thoughts of generalized regression neural network (GRNN) and the extreme response surface method (ERSM). The mathematical model of the developed GRENN method was first established in respect of the LCF life model and the ERSM model. The method and procedure for reliability and sensitivity analysis based on the GRENN model were discussed. Next, the reliability and sensitivity analyses of blisk LCF life were performed utilizing the GRENN method under a thermal-structural interaction by regarding the randomness of gas temperature, rotation speed, material parameters, LCF performance parameters and the minimum fatigue life point of the objective of study. The analytical results reveal that the reliability degree was 0.99848 and the fatigue life is 9419 cycles for blisk LCF life when the allowable value is 6000 cycles so that the blisk has some life margin relative to 4500 cycles in the deterministic analysis. In comparison with ERSM, the computing time and precision of the proposed GRENN under 10,000 simulations is 1.311 s and 99.95%. This is improved by 15.18% in computational efficiency and 1.39% in accuracy, respectively. Moreover, high efficiency and high precision of the developed GRENN become more obvious with the increasing number of simulations. In light of the sensitivity analysis, the fatigue ductility index and temperature are the key factors of determining blisk LCF life because their effect probabilities reach 41% and 26%, respectively. Material density, rotor speed, the fatigue ductility coefficient, the fatigue strength coefficient and the fatigue ductility index are also significant parameters for LCF life. Poisson’s ratio and elastic modulus of materials have little effect. The efforts of this paper validate the feasibility and validity of GRENN in the reliability analysis of blisk LCF life and give the influence degrees of various random parameters on blisk LCF life, which are promising to provide useful insights for the probabilistic optimization of turbine blisk LCF life.

Abstract In this study, the local and global sensitivity analyses of the Winterwerp model to the input parameters have been carried out using the Garson algorithm and the PaD2 method by virtue of an artificial neural network. The main results of the sensitivity analyses are that the model is most sensitive to the breakup parameter and that only two parameters (the floc aggregation and breakup parameters) are significant. The result that the model output is less sensitive to the choice of fractal dimension seems to imply that the modification work on the fractal dimension might be unnecessary.

New damage mechanics method is proposed to predict the low-cycle fatigue life of metallic structures under multiaxial loading. The microstructure mechanical model is proposed to simulate anisotropic elastoplastic damage evolution. As the micromodel depends on few material parameters, the present method is very concise and suitable for engineering application. The material parameters in damage evolution equation are determined by fatigue experimental data of standard specimens. By employing further development on the ANSYS platform, the anisotropic elastoplastic damage mechanics-finite element method is developed. The fatigue crack propagation life of satellite structure is predicted using the present method and the computational results comply with the experimental data very well.

Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs) are effective energy dissipation devices. The key advantages of BRB are its comparable tensile and compressive behavior and stable energy dissipation capacity. In this paper, low-cycle fatigue performance of domestic BRBs is obtained based on collected experimental data under constant and variable amplitude loadings. The results show that the relationship between fatigue life and strain amplitude satisfies the Mason-Coffin equation. By adopting theory of structural reliability, this paper presents several allowable fatigue life curves with different confidential levels. Besides, Palmgren-Miner method was used for calculating BRB cumulative damages. An allowable damage factor with 95% confidential level is put forward for assessing damage under variable amplitude fatigue. In addition, this paper presents an empirical criterion with rain flow algorithm, which may be used to predict the fracture of BRBs under severe earthquakes and provide theory and method for their engineering application. Finally, the conclusions of the paper were vilified through precise yet conservative prediction of the fatigue failure of BRB.

Aerospace materials experience high levels of mechanical and thermal loading, high/low cycle fatigue, and damage from foreign objects during service, which can lead to premature retirement. Mechanical surface treatments of metallic components, for example, fan blades and blisks, are proven to improve fatigue life, improve wear resistance and avoid stress corrosion by introducing work hardening, compressive residual stresses of sub-surface, and surface finishing. Vibropeening can enhance aerospace materials’ fatigue life involving the kinetic agitation of hardened steel media in a vibratory finishing machine that induces compressive stresses into the component sub-layers while keeping a finished surface. Spherical steel balls are the most widely used shape among steel-based media and have been explored for decades. However, they are not always versatile, which cannot access deep grooves, sharp corners, and intricate profiles. Steel ballcones or satellites, when mixed with round steel balls and other steel media (diagonals, pins, eclipses, cones), works very well in such areas that ball-shaped media are unable to reach. However, a methodology of study the effect of irregularly-shaped media in surface enhancement processes has not been established. This paper proposes a finite element-based model to present a methodology for the parametric study of vibratory surface enhancement with irregularly-shaped media and investigates residual stress profiles within a treated area of an Inconel component. The methodology is discussed in detail, which involves a stochastic simulation of orientation, impact force, and impact location. The contrasting effects of a high aspect ratio, or an edge contact, as opposed to rounded and oblique contacts are demonstrated, with further analysis on the superposition of these effects. Finally, the simulation results are compared with actual residual stress measurements and was found to have a max percent difference of 34% up to 20 [Formula: see text]m below the media surface.
