This study focuses on improving the performance of asphalt mixture at low- and high- temperature and analyzing the effect of diatomite and basalt fiber on the performance of the asphalt mixture. Based on the L16(45) orthogonal experimental design (OED), the content of diatomite (D) and basalt fiber (B) and the asphalt-aggregate (A) ratio were selected as contributing factors, and each contributing factor corresponded to four levels. Bulk volume density (γf), volume of air voids (VV), voids filled with asphalt (VFA), Marshall stability (MS) and splitting strength at −10 °C (Sb) were taken as the evaluation indexes. According to the results of the orthogonal experiment, the range analysis and variance analysis were used to study the effect of the diatomite content, basalt fiber content and asphalt-aggregate ratio on the performance of the asphalt mixture, and the grey correlation grade analysis (GCGA) was used to obtain the optimal mixing scheme. Furthermore, the performance tests were conducted to evaluate the performance improvement of asphalt mixtures with diatomite and basalt fibers, and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests were carried out to analyze the mechanism of diatomite and basalt fibers in asphalt mixtures. The results revealed that the addition of diatomite and basalt fiber can significantly increase the VV of asphalt mixture, and reduce γf and VFA; the optimal performance of the asphalt mixture at high- and low-temperature are achieved with 14% diatomite, 0.32% basalt fibers and 5.45% asphalt-aggregate ratio. Moreover, the porous structure of diatomite and the overlapping network of basalt fibers are the main reasons for improving the performance of asphalt mixture.

Based on the principle of orthogonal test, the optimization model of sunflower shaped arch bridge scheme was set up. The five key design parameters were selected as the main factors. The four computation index, which reflect mechanical performance, were selected as analytical objects. The 16 orthogonal experiment schemes were arranged with four levels orthogonal table . The curves of the factors to the index were obtained from the mechanical response under dead load and live load through the finite element analysis model. By the range analysis method, the influential levels of the factors to the index were obtained from the result of the test , and the factor optimizatuion level of the factors was determined to further optimize the layout scheme of the sunfloawer shaped arch bridge.

Porous asphalt mixture is a type of asphalt mixture with good drainage. However, it has poor tensile strength performance and durability. Chopped basalt fibers (CBF) have been proved to be an effective additive to improve the mechanical and fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures, but little attention has been paid on porous asphalt mixture. This paper examined the effect of chopped basalt fibers with different lengths (nonfiber, 3 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm, and 12 mm) and contents (3% and 4%) on the performance of the porous asphalt mixture. A series of tests were conducted to figure out the optimum fiber length and content, including draindown test, cantabro abrasion test, freeze-thaw split tensile test, wheel tracking test, low-temperature cracking resistance test, and four-point bending beam test. Thereafter, indirect tensile tests at different temperatures were conducted to investigate the tensile strength properties of porous asphalt mixtures with optimum fiber length and content. Besides, the macroscopic and microscopic morphology of fracture sections of the samples after indirect tensile tests were studied by using a single-lens reflex (SLR) camera and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) so as to further explore the reinforced mechanism of chopped basalt fibers. The results show that the addition of chopped basalt fibers can generally improve the performance of porous asphalt mixture since chopped basalt fibers form a three-dimensional network structure in the porous asphalt mixture.

In this study, the compaction characteristics of recycled hot-mix asphalt (RHMA) were evaluated using the void content (VV), compaction energy index (CEI), slope of accumulated compaction energy (K), and lock point (LP). Then, the effects of the compaction parameters, including the gradation of the RHMA, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content, temperature of gyrations, and number of gyrations, on the compaction characteristics of RHMA were investigated. An orthogonal experiment was designed and the data collected were analyzed via range analysis; then, a regression model was generated relying on a quadratic polynomial. Furthermore, the regression model was used for the comparison and prediction of the mixture’s compactability during the material design. Finally, the compaction mechanism of RHMA was discussed from the perspective of the void content of RAP particles. The results showed that a finer aggregate gradation, a higher gyration temperature, a greater number of gyrations, and a higher RAP content were effective for increasing the compactability of RHMA. The range analysis results suggest that the gradation of RHMA has the greatest influence on compactability, followed by the RAP content. The RAP aggregate cannot diffuse to a new mixture completely, so the remained RAP particle reduces the void content of RHMA. Therefore, a higher RAP content up to 50% can help RHMA to achieve the designed void content with higher efficiency.

In order to discuss the effect of the basalt fiber on reinforcing pavement performance of asphalt mixtures, the optimum dosage of asphalt and fibers were studied by the method of Marshall test and rut test firstly. Then pavement performances of basalt fiber-modified asphalt mixtures were investigated through tests of high temperature stability, water stability and low temperature crack resistance, and compared with that of polyester fiber, xylogen fiber and control mixture. The testing results showed that the pavement performance of fiber-modified asphalt mixture are improved and optimized comparing with control asphalt mixture, and the performance of basalt fiber-modified asphalt mixture with best composition were excelled than those of polyester fiber and xylogen fiber.

This study aims to study the viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures incorporating styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) polymer and basalt fiber under freeze–thaw (F-T) cycles by using the static creep test. Asphalt mixture samples incorporating styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) polymer and basalt fiber were manufactured following the Superpave gyratory compaction (SGC) method and coring as well as sawing. After 0 to 21 F-T cycles processing, a uniaxial compression static creep test for the asphalt mixture specimens was performed to evaluate the influence of F-T cycles. The results indicated that the F-T cycles caused a larger creep deformation in the asphalt mixtures, which led to a decrease in the rut resistance of the asphalt mixtures incorporating SBS polymer and basalt fiber. Besides, the resistance to deformation decreased significantly in the early stage of F-T cycles. On the other hand, the viscoelastic parameters were analyzed to discuss the variation of viscoelastic characteristics. The relaxation time increased with F-T cycles, which will not be conducive to internal stress dissipation. Compared with lignin fiber, basalt fiber can improve the resistance to high-temperature deformation and the low-temperature crack resistance of asphalt mixtures under F-T cycles.

To study the influence of fiber on the water stability of asphalt mixtures, the optimum dosage of asphalt and fibers are studied by the method of Marshall test and rut test. The results demonstrate that the optimum dosage of asphalt and fibers are 4.63% and 0.30%, respectively. Then the improved effects of basalt fiber on water stability of asphalt mixtures are evaluated through immersed Marshall test and freeze-thaw splitting test according to related specifications. The results show that the freeze-thaw splitting strength and splitting strength without freeze-thaw of fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture are improved to some extent compared with control mixture. Splitting strength without freeze-thaw of basalt, polyester and xylogen fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture is increased by 36.4%, 15.4% and 6.2%, and freeze-thaw splitting strength is increased by 55.2%, 28.7% and 14.5%. It can be concluded that fiber can remarkably improved the water stability of asphalt mixtures, besides; the improvement effects of basalt fiber are superior to polyester fiber and xylogen fiber.

In order to discuss the effectiveness of basalt fiber in reinforcing pavement performance of asphalt mixtures, the pavement performances of basalt fiber asphalt mixtures were investigated by tests of high temperature stability, water stability and low temperature crack resistance, and compared with the pavement performance of asphalt mixtures with polyester fiber and xylogen fiber, and that of reference mixture. The results show that pavement performance of fiber asphalt mixture are improved and optimized comparing with reference asphalt mixture, the performance of asphalt mixture with basalt fiber are excelled than those with polyester fiber and xylogen fiber while the dosage of fibers is keeping at the optimum.

With the ageing transportation infrastructure, many transportation agencies across the world are focussing on rehabilitating and improving existing pavements. This means more roadwork on pavements open to vehicular traffic. Considering the rapid increase in both traffic volume and intensity in recent years, the work conditions on pavements have become difficult. Thus, there is an important need to design and construct long-lasting pavements that possess high durability, appropriate roughness or smoothness, and that which helps achieve greater time interval between repairs. The use of basalt fibers has shown to improve the durability and mechanical properties of concrete and asphalt mixtures through dispersed reinforcement. This paper presents new data and insights on the use of basalt fibers in concrete and asphalt mixtures acquired from theoretical and experimental research studies that can be useful in the design, construction and rehabilitation of highway pavements and airdrome runways.

The main distresses of asphalt pavements in seasonally frozen regions are due to the effects of water action, freeze-thaw cycles, and so on. Basalt fiber, as an eco-friendly mineral fiber with high mechanical performance, has been adopted to reinforce asphalt mixture in order to improve its mechanical properties. This study investigated the freeze-thaw damage characteristics of asphalt mixtures reinforced with eco-friendly basalt fiber by volume and mechanical properties—air voids, splitting tensile strength, and indirect tensile stiffness modulus tests. Test results indicated that asphalt mixtures reinforced with eco-friendly basalt fiber had better mechanical properties (i.e., splitting tensile strength and indirect tensile stiffness modulus) before and after freeze-thaw cycles. Furthermore, this study developed logistic damage models of asphalt mixtures in terms of the damage characteristics, and found that adding basalt fiber could significantly reduce the damage degree by about 25%, and slow down the damage grow rate by about 45% compared with control group without basalt fiber. Moreover, multi-variable grey models (GM) (1,N) were established for modelling the damage characteristics of asphalt mixtures under the effect of freeze-thaw cycles. GM (1,3) was proven as an effective prediction model to perform better in prediction accuracy compared to GM (1,2).
