In this study, a static tensile test of secondary co-cure reinforcement (SCR) of laminates revealed the damage and fracture locations in the respective structure. Test results indicated that adhesive debonding was the primary cause of structural failure. Finite element modeling (FEM) performed on the large opening laminate and strengthening structure consisted of simulations of the axial tension experiment, damage assessment, and the final load estimate. It was observed that the tensile strength of SCR was increased by 10.81% in comparison with the unrepaired structure. The results of FEM indicated that the initiation and propagation of damage, and final failure, were located in the layer of reinforcing section which was bonded to the adhesive layer, proving that the performance of the adhesive layer was the dominating factor with regard to the reinforced structure and that the thickness of the reinforcing section could be reduced to lessen the weight.

Abstract A quasi-static tensile test was performed on a 1.4 mm-thick TRIP780 steel strip with welding points. An MTS810 material test machine was used in the test, and a Split Hopkinson tension bar device was used in performing impact stretch loading at different strain rates. The dynamic tensile stress–strain curve of the spot welding material with different strain rates was obtained through the finely designed Hopkinson rod test, and the strain rate dependence of a TRIP780 steel spot welding material was discussed. According to the dynamic constitutive equation of the TRIP780 steel spot welding material, the test results were numerically simulated, the constitutive description and test curves were compared, and the simulation results and test results were discussed and analyzed. The fractures of the test recovery specimen were scanned with the scanning electron microscope, and the fracture mechanism of the TRIP780 steel spot welding material was explored by observing the fractures. The surfaces of the fractures surface showed obvious cleavage river patterns, and the evolution process of microcracks was determined and used in characterizing brittle fractures in specimen spot welding sample subjected to dynamic stretch loading.

Based on micromechanics, an elastic-plastic-brittle damage model of concrete beam reinforced with stick steel is proposed by considering the aggregate gradation curve algorithms and the heterogeneity. In the model, the concrete beam reinforced with stick steel is taken as a five-phase composite material that consists of the mortar matrix, coarse aggregate, bonds between mortar and aggregate, steel plate, and the adhesive layer between steel plate and concrete beam. Through the numerical investigation on shear failure of concrete beam reinforced with stick steel under external force, the results show that the model can clearly simulate microscopic plastic yield, and the initiation and extension of crack. The strength of the steel plate is relatively stronger, so it cant enhance the shear capability of the each side of the beam and the concrete beam bears the larger shear stress, which results that a large number of elements, from the supports to the load points, begin to yield. When the strain of the elements exceeds the yield strength, the elements will produce failure until the failure of the whole specimen. The final failure mode of concrete beam reinforced with stick steel is the shear failure.

The analytical and experiment research of In-Vessel Corium Retention (IVR) in the Chinese Pressurized-water Reactor 1000 MWe (CPR1000) are introduced. The IVR research consists of preliminary phase and detailed phase. The analysis of thermal failure, structural failure and penetration failure of Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) and the experimental research of External Reactor Vessel Cooling (ERVC) are performed at preliminary phase. Analysis results show that the RPV failure is the dominated by thermal failure mode and the probability of the thermal failure is very low. Test results show that the IVR success probability for CPR1000 is about 99% if the Critical Heat Flux (CHF) of CPR1000 is the same as that of AP600. Further works, including the ERVC enhancement design, the CHF test of the RPV outer wall and the recalculation of the IVR success probability for CPR1000, will be performed at detailed phase in the near future.

Abstract The ambient vibration test results conducted on the Imperial County Services Building prior to the 15 October 1979 Imperial Valley earthquake are summarized. These results are of significant interest because the Imperial County Services Building has been the source of many postearthquake investigations due to the fact that the 1979 earthquake represented the first time a building instrumented with strong motion recorders suffered and recorded the major structural failure.

Abstract A loading function is a relation between combined stresses for which the beginning of plastic flow takes place. The loading function for a given material is different depending upon the initial plastic strains produced. That is, the initial stress or strain history influences the subsequent loading function. This paper gives the results of an experimental investigation to determine the validity of certain loading functions proposed for anisotropic materials. The study reported was conducted for an aluminum alloy 24S-T and the state of stress covered was biaxial tension. These stresses were produced in the usual way by subjecting thin-walled tubular specimens to axial tension and internal pressure. The test results showed that none of the existing loading functions is adequate for interpreting the plastic stress-strain relations obtained. Tests also were made to determine the change in the loading function with increase in plastic flow. It was found that the loading function did not remain symmetrical with respect to the original function, nor was the new loading function the same as the original except for a shift of origin. However, the test results support in a qualitative way the concept of the so-called “yield corner.”

The decrease of strength after saturation of rocks is known as moisture-induced softening. To date, there are numerous studies on the mechanism of moisture-induced softening of different rocks. However, due to a lack of effective observational methods, the microcosmic mechanism of moisture-induced softening still needs to be understood. We collected and processed acoustic emission (AE) signals during the uniaxial compression test of marble specimens. The results of spectral and statistical analysis show that two dominant frequency bands of AE waveforms exist regardless of the specimen’s water content. Additionally, for the AE signals from the saturated specimens, the ranges of the low and high frequency bands are wider than dried rock samples. Besides, since the tensile and shear failures in the rock release low and high dominant frequency AE signals, respectively, the test results of this paper show that micro-shear and micro-tensile failures dominate the final failure of dried and saturated rocks, respectively.

Crack initiation and propagation process of fatigue test in semi-circular notched plates at elevated temperature were observed by the CCD video camera. Test specimens are made of SUS304 stainless steel, and temperature is kept to be 550°C, and geometry of semi-circular notched plate specimens are changed by diameter size of the circular hole. Photographs in all cycles were recorded to investigate crack initiation process in structural components having stress concentration and obtain number of cycle of crack initiation (Nc). The test results were compared with predictions by Stress Redistribution Locus (SRL) method and Neuber’s rule’s method.

The brittle adhesive layer in carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates was strengthened by using short aramid fibers in this study. To ensure the feasibility and effectiveness of short aramid fiber interfacial toughening at the interface between the carbon-fiber face sheets, the self-prepared short aramid fibre tissue and the wettability treatment technology with resin pre-coating were applied to enable short aramid fibres to be well embedded in the uneven regions in the CFRP fabrics with fibres oriented at 0° and 90° to form a strong pulling resistance. The ultimate load and the mode I interlaminar fracture toughness have been improved by 75% and 103.9% from the double cantilever beam mode I crack propagation tests, respectively. The reinforcing mechanisms within the “composite adhesive layer” as a result of short aramid fibres are discussed together with detailed scanning electron microscopy observations and comparison test results.

The performance of joint structure is an important aspect of composite material design. In this study, we examined the compression shear bearing capacity of the adhesively bonded single-lap joint structure of high-temperature-resistant composite materials (C/C composite materials). The test pieces were produced in accordance with the appropriate ASTM C1292 standard, which were used for the compression shear test. The failure morphology of the layer was observed by a digital microscopic system and scanning electron microscope. The experimental result shows that the load on the test piece increased nonlinearly until the failure occurred, and most of the adhesive layer exhibited cohesive failures at three temperature points (400, 600, and 800 °C), while the interface failures occurred in a small part of the adhesive layer. A numerical analysis model was established using ABAQUS finite element software. The simulation results were compared with the test results to verify the correctness of the model. On the basis of correctness of the model verified by comparing the simulation results and the test results, the influences of temperature and overlapped length on the joint compression shear performance were studied through the validated simulation method. Numerical results showed that the ultimate load of the joint decreased with increases in temperature and that the distribution trends of the shear stresses in the overlapped length direction were substantially the same for joints of different overlapped lengths.

In this study, a new method was proposed to study the relaxation properties of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) fabric under axial tension. Under the condition of constant temperature and humidity, six groups of 168 h stress relaxation tests were conducted. Considering the influence of the prestress level, the size of CFRP cloth, and the surface coating of CFRP cloth on the relaxation performance, the measures to reduce the relaxation loss were proposed. The relaxation rate calculation model was established based on the test results of the authors and other scholars and was validated through comparisons with the test results. The results indicate that the relaxation rate of CFRP cloth was between 1.92% and 6.1%. When the prestress level was smaller than 0.3 fu, the relaxation rate of CFRP cloth decreased with the increase of prestress level. When the prestress level was greater than 0.3 fu, the relaxation rate increased with the increase of the prestress level. Under the same conditions, the relaxation rate of the CFRP specimens coated with glue was smaller than the uncoated samples by 3.21–6.28%. The calculation model could well estimate the relaxation rate of CFRP cloth.
