Molybdenum chalcogenides present interesting properties beyond their superconducting critical temperatures and upper critical magnetic fields, making them suitable for potential applications in tribology, batteries, catalysis, or thermopower. In this study, Mo15S19 nanoparticles with an average diameter of 10 nm were synthesized via the reaction of ammonium molybdate with hydrochloric acid and elemental sulfur as reducers at 245 °C. The oxidation to MoO3 in air was efficiently avoided by using linseed oil as a reaction medium and dispersant. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs of the as-prepared samples revealed the presence of few-micron-size aggregates, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization evidenced that the samples were polynanocrystalline with a high degree of homogeneity in size (standard deviation of 2.7 nm). The absence of the first-order (00l) reflection in the X-ray diffraction pattern was also indicative of the absence of Mo3S4 stacking, suggesting that it was a non-layered material. A dispersion of the nanoparticles in linseed oil has been studied as a lubricant of steel–steel sliding contacts, showing the formation of a surface layer that reduces wear and mean friction coefficients with respect to the base oil.

One-dimensional magnetic nanowires have attracted much attention in the last decades due to their unique physical properties and potential applications in magnetic recording and spintronics. In this work, ordered arrays of Co/Cu multilayered nanowires which can be exploited to develop magnetoresistive sensors were successfully prepared using porous anodic alumina (PAA) templates. The structure and morphology of the multilayered nanowire arrays were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The nanowire arrays are highly ordered and the average diameter is about 50 nm, which is controlled by the pore diameter of the PAA templates. The influences of period number and Cu layer thickness on the magnetic and the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) properties were investigated. The coercivity and remanence ratio increase first and then gradually tend to be stable with the increase of period number and the Cu layer thickness, while the GMR ratio increases first and then decreases with the increase of the period number accompanied by an oscillatory behavior of GMR as the Cu layer thickness changes, which are ascribed to the spin dependence electron scattering in the multilayers. The optimum GMR of −13% appears at Co (50 nm)/Cu (5 nm) with 200 deposition cycles in our experimental conditions.

Ultraviolet laser-irradiation can be used to induce an insulator-to-conductor phase transition on the surface of Kapton polyimide. Such structures have potential applications as resistors or conductors for VLSI applications as well as general utility electrodes. Although the percolative nature of the phase transformation has been well-established, there has been little definitive work on the mechanism or extent of transformation. In particular, there has been considerable debate about whether or not the transition is primarily photothermal in nature, as we propose, or photochemical. In this study, cross-sectional optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are utilized to characterize the nature of microstructural changes associated with the laser-induced pyrolysis of polyimide.Laser-modified polyimide samples initially 12 μm thick were prepared in cross-section by standard ultramicrotomy. Resulting contraction in parallel to the film surface has led to distortions in apparent magnification. The scale bars shown are calibrated for the direction normal to the film surface only.

The fabrication of multilayer films (MLF) with layer thicknesses down to one monolayer has led to the development of materials with unique properties not found in bulk materials. The properties of interest depend critically on the structure and composition of the films, with the interfacial regions between the layers being of particular importance. There are a number of magnetic MLF systems based on Co, several of which have potential applications as perpendicular magnetic (e.g Co/Cr) or magneto-optic (e.g. Co/Pt) recording media. Of particular concern are the effects of parameters such as crystallographic texture and interface roughness, which are determined by the fabrication conditions, on magnetic properties and structure. In this study we have fabricated Co-based MLF by UHV thermal evaporation in the prechamber of an atom probe field-ion microscope (AP). The multilayers were deposited simultaneously onto cobalt field-ion specimens (for AP and position-sensitive atom probe (POSAP) microanalysis without exposure to atmosphere) and onto the flat (001) surface of oxidised silicon wafers (for subsequent study in cross-section using high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) in a JEOL 4000EX. Deposi-tion was from W filaments loaded with material in the form of wire (Co, Fe, Ni, Pt and Au) or flakes (Cr). The base pressure in the chamber was around 8×10−8 torr during deposition with a typical deposition rate of 0.05 - 0.2nm/s.

Ferrous sulphate was oxidized by potassium chlorate in the pH region 2-7 and at temperatures ranging from 298.1 to 323.1 K and various hydrolytic products of Fe(III) were separated and indentified. The separated solid ferric products were analyzed using a combination of the chemical analysis, IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy. The following substances were found as major components of the products: Fe2O3.n H2O ("ferric gel"), Fe2O3.n H2O with bound SO2-4 ions ("sulphogel"), α-FeO(OH), γ-FeO(OH) and Fe3O4. Their amount depends particularly on the pH temperature of the reaction medium.

Fast temperature-responsive interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels based on soy protein and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) were prepared using the sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) solutions as the reaction medium. The structure and properties were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The bovine serum albumin (BSA) release behaviors and release mechanism were also investigated. The results show that the proposed hydrogels have high porous structures and have a fast release rate. The BSA release mechanism belongs to an anomalous transport and the Fickian contribution is dominant. The proposed hydrogels may have the potential applications in the field of biomedical materials such as in the controlled release of drugs.

The antifungal effectiveness against rose powdery mildew using antimicrobial nanosilver colloidal solution was investigated. Double-capsulized nanosilver was prepared by chemical reaction of silver ion with aid of physical method, reducing agent and stabilizers. The average diameter of nanosilver was about 1.5 nm. They were highly stable and very well dispersive in aqueous solution. The Transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis spectrometer were used for measurements of size analysis and their stability, respectively. The nanosilver colloidal solution of concentration of 5000 ppm was diluted in 10 ppm of 500 kg and sprayed at large area of 3306 m2polluted by rose powdery mildew. The white rose powdery mildew fade out above 95 % after 2 days and was not recurred for a week. The antifungal effects were observed by an optical microscope and photographs.

Microstructure of terminal area of Al65Cu32.9Co2.1ingots (numbers indicate at.%), obtained via directional solidification was studied. Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction were applied. Point microanalysis by Scanning Electron Microscope was used for examination of chemical compositions of alloy phases. It was found that tetragonal θ phase of Al2Cu stoichiometric formula was the dominate phase (matrix). Additionally the alloy contained orthogonal set of nanofibres of Al7Cu2Co T phase with the average diameter of 50-500 nm and oval areas of hexagonal Al3(Cu,Co)2H-phase, surrounded by monoclinic AlCu η1phase rim. Inside some areas of H-phase cores of decagonal quasicrystalline D phase were observed.

Observations by electron microscopy on thin sections of the metatarsal tendon of embryonic fowls show that in the 8-day embryo the earliest definable collagen fibrils of 80 Å in diameter are intimately associated with the cytoplasm of the compact, apparently syncytial, cells of which the tendon rudiment is composed. As development proceeds, some intracytoplasmic groups of fibrils are distinguishable, but intercellular spaces also develop and these gradually become filled with fibrils; finally, bundles are formed and lie packed between the adjacent cells. Soon the extracellular organization predominates until at 20days the average diameter of the fibrils is 400 Å and the normal 640 Å periodicity of collagen has been achieved. The morphological features demonstrated have been correlated with histochemical data, and the possible function of the various cellular components in the formation of the intercellular substance has been discussed. By the use of sections in which fibrils have been cut exactly transverse to the bundle axis it has been shown that each fibril is invested by interfibrillar material. As the diameter of the fibrils increases with age the relative volume of interfibrillar material within a bundle diminishes; it is therefore concluded that this material must contain either collagen or the necessary precursors in order to account for the enlargement of the fibrils. Thus the interfibrillar material is of fundamental importance to the formation and growth of the collagen fibrils.

We report the synthesis of three-dimensional Fe3O4/graphene aerogels (GAs) and their application for the removal of arsenic (As) ions from water. The morphology and properties of Fe3O4/GAs have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and superconducting quantum inference device. The 3D nanostructure shows that iron oxide nanoparticles are decorated on graphene with an interconnected network structure. It is found that Fe3O4/GAs own a capacity of As(V) ions adsorption up to 40.048 mg/g due to their remarkable 3D structure and existence of magnetic Fe3O4nanoparticles for separation. The adsorption isotherm matches well with the Langmuir model and kinetic analysis suggests that the adsorption process is pseudo-second-ordered. In addition to the excellent adsorption capability, Fe3O4/GAs can be easily and effectively separated from water, indicating potential applications in water treatment.
