: In situ micro-TiB2/Cu cermets with a different TiB2 content (40, 50, and 60 vol %) were successfully fabricated by combustion synthesis (CS) and hot press consolidation in Cu-Ti-B systems. In addition, different contents of Cr and Zr were added to the Cu-Ti-B systems. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and abrasive wear properties of the TiB2/Cu cermets were investigated. As the ceramic content increased, the yield strength and compressive strength of the cermets were found to increase, while the strain decreased. An increase in load and abrasive particle size caused the wear volume loss of the TiB2/Cu cermets to increase. When the ceramic content was 60 vol %, the wear resistance of the TiB2/Cu cermets was 3.3 times higher than that of pure copper. The addition of the alloying elements Zr and Cr had a significant effect on the mechanical properties of the cermets. When the Cr content was 5 wt %, the yield strength, ultimate compressive strength, and microhardness of the cermets reached a maximum of 997 MPa, 1183 MPa, and 491 Hv, respectively. Correspondingly, when the Zr content was 5 wt %, those three values reached 1764 MPa, 1967 MPa, and 655 Hv, respectively, which are 871 MPa, 919 MPa, and 223 Hv higher than those of the unalloyed cermets. The wear mechanism of the in-situ TiB2/Cu cermets, and the mechanisms by which the strength and wear resistance were enhanced by the addition of Zr, were preliminarily revealed.

The in situ TiC/Al-Cu nanocomposites were fabricated in the Al-Ti-C reaction systems with various carbon sources by the combined method of combustion synthesis, hot pressing, and hot extrusion. The carbon sources used in this paper were the pure C black, hybrid carbon source (50 wt.% C black + 50 wt.% CNTs) and pure CNTs. The average sizes of nano-TiC particles range from 67 nm to 239 nm. The TiC/Al-Cu nanocomposites fabricated by the hybrid carbon source showed more homogenously distributed nano-TiC particles, higher tensile strength and hardness, and better abrasive wear resistance than those of the nanocomposites fabricated by pure C black and pure CNTs. As the nano-TiC particles content increased, the tensile strength, hardness, and the abrasive wear resistance of the nanocomposites increased. The 30 vol.% TiC/Al-Cu nanocomposite fabricated by the hybrid carbon source showed the highest yield strength (531 MPa), tensile strength (656 MPa), hardness (331.2 HV), and the best abrasive wear resistance.

Combined SHS with casting, in-situ Al2O3particle-reinforced copper matrix composite was fabricated. The effects of the load and Al2O3particle on the friction coefficient and wear volume were investigated. And the wear resistance of composite was compared with that of pure copper. The results show that with the increase of load, the coefficient of the copper increases, while it decreases slightly as to composite. The wear volume of the composite is always lower than that of copper. The highest relative wear ability is 4.5, which indicates a better wear resistance..

The dry sliding characteristics of three in situ Al2O3/Al-Si composites fabricated with volume fraction of 10, 20 and 30 vol.% were investigated. The effect of sliding parameters on the wear properties was investigated. As the sliding velocity increases the wear loss decreases systematically. When the volume fraction increased to 20 vol.%, an improvement of wear resistance was obtained. However, when the volume fraction was 30 vol.%, a further decrease of wear resistance was observed. In case of low volume fraction (10 vol.%), an extensive plastic deformation by plowing out the ductile Al matrix along with narrow grooves was observed. As the volume fraction increased to 20 vol.%, the abrasive wear by micro grooving is dominant as well as the low load is used. Whereas, when the volume fraction increased to 30 vol.%, besides the effect of large pores, the embedded Al2O3 in the massive Si blocks formed a weaker interface thereby behaving as source of crakes initiation and propagation. As result, fracture, micro-cutting and delaminating are observed as dominant abrasive wear mechanisms

Considering large number production of the abandoned tyres and the question of the concrete with mixture of crumb rubber,the mainly task of this paper is to study the mechanical properties of different mixing ratio concrete with vary volume of crumb rubber. The results showed that the workability, apparent density, compressive strength, flexural strength and brittleness index decrease as the increase of crumb rubber. While the anti-crack performance and anti-fatigue performance can be improved. The wear-resistance properties are a little lower than common concrete.

We conducted comparative tests of the wear resistance of metals operating under abrasive conditions. Samples were cut from the working parts of mixer-pneumosuperchargers. The chemical composition and mechanical properties were determined. To compare samples under abrasive wear conditions, we designed and assembled a carousel installation. The principle of its operation is based on mixing the abrasive medium by the samples being studied with a given speed. Wear resistance was evaluated by weight loss by samples after several test cycles. To determine changes in the structure of the metal during abrasive wear, metallographic studies of the samples were carried out before and after the tests. It is shown that the best complex of service and mechanical properties is possessed by 110G13L steel.

One of the most popular additive manufacturing processes is laser based direct metal laser sintering process which enables us to make complex three dimensional parts directly from CAD models. Due to layer by layer formation, parts built in this process tend to be anisotropic in nature. Suitable heat treatment can reduce this anisotropic behaviour by changing the microstructure. Depending upon the applications, a wide range of mechanical properties can be achieved between 482–621° C temperature for precipitation-hardened stainless steels. In the present study effect of different heat treatment processes, namely solution annealing, ageing and overaging, on tensile strength, hardness and wear properties has been studied in detail. Suitable metallurgical and mechanical characterization techniques have been applied wherever required, to support the experimental observations. Results show H900 condition gives highest yield strength and lowest tensile strain at break whereas solution annealing gives lowest yield strength and as-built condition gives highest tensile strain at break. SEM images show that H900 and H1150 condition produces brittle and ductile morphology respectively which in turn gives highest and lowest hardness value respectively.XRD analysis shows presence of austenite phases which can increase hardness at the cost of ductility. Average wear loss for H900 condition is highest whereas it is lowest for solution annealed condition. Further optical and SEM images have been taken to understand the basic wear mechanism involved.

ABSTRACTCu-Nb composite wires were produced from powder, electrolytically coated with tin and annealed to convert the Nb fibres to Nb 3Sn. The content was varied between 10 wt % and 40 wt %. The superconducting properties of the wires were determined. The mechanical properties, tensile strength, yield strength and ductility were measured as a function of volume fraction and deformation over a wide temperature range. The results are compared with those for wires produced by different techniques.

The performance of polymer composites in seawater, under high hydrostatic pressure (typically few tens of MPa), for simulating exposures at great depths in seas and oceans, has been little studied. In this paper, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and its composites reinforced by carbon fibres and glass fibres were prepared. The seawater environment with different seawater hydrostatic pressure ranging from normal pressure to 40 MPa was simulated with special equipment, in which the seawater absorption and wear behaviour of PEEK and PEEK-based composites were examined in situ . The effects of seawater hydrostatic pressure on the mechanical properties, wear resistance and microstructure of PEEK and its composites were focused on. The results showed that seawater absorption of PEEK and its composites were greatly accelerated by increased hydrostatic pressure in the deep sea. Affected by seawater absorption, both for neat PEEK and composites, the degradation on mechanical properties, wear resistance and crystallinity were induced, the degree of which was increasingly serious with the increase of hydrostatic pressure of seawater environment. There existed a good correlation in an identical form of exponential function between the wear rate and the seawater hydrostatic pressure. Moreover, the corresponding mechanisms of the effects of deep-sea hydrostatic pressure were also discussed.
