Smith–Magenis syndrome (SMS) is a rare genetic disease characterized by intellectual disability, serious behavior disorders, neurodevelopment delay, and speech and language disorders. An acoustic and biomechanical analysis of the voice of SMS young adults was carried out due to (a) the close relationship between the laryngeal biomechanics and the clinical and emotional state of a person; (b) the fact that no research on the voice in this syndrome has been conducted previously. The vocal timbre of most people diagnosed with SMS does not seem to be according to the complexion of diagnosed individuals, nor to their gender and age, so it could be interesting to attend the analysis of phonation of people with a rare genetic syndrome such as SMS. We used BioMetPhon, a specific piece of software to analyze the glottal source and biomechanics of vocals folds. Nineteen features related to dysphonia, physiology, and biomechanics of the vocal folds were considered. The adult phonation of 9 individuals with SMS was analyzed and compared to 100 normative male and female adult voices. Results showed that the phonation of the SMS group significantly deviates from the adult normophonic profile in more than one of the 19 features examined, such as stiffness of the thyroarytenoid muscle and dynamic mass of the vocal fold cover, among others.

The voice producing process is a complex interplay between glottal pressure, vocal folds, their elasticity and tension. The material properties of vocal folds are still insufficiently studied, because the determination of material properties in soft tissues is often difficult and connected to extensive experimental setups. To shed light on this less researched area, in this work, a dynamic pipette aspiration technique is utilized to measure the elasticity in a frequency range of 100–1000 Hz. The complex elasticity could be assessed with the phase shift between exciting pressure and tissue movement. The dynamic pipette aspiration setup has been miniaturized with regard to a future invivo application. The techniques were applied on 3 different porcine larynges 4 h and 1 d postmortem, in order to investigate the deterioration of the tissue over time and analyze correlation in elasticity values between vocal fold pairs. It was found that vocal fold pairs do have different absolute elasticity values but similar trends. This leads to the assumption that those trends are more important for phonation than having same absolute values.

Abstract Background Voice alterations after thyroidectomy with mobile vocal folds are common. Ultrasonography has been used to assess the mobility of the vocal folds after thyroidectomy. Methods 54 patients underwent thyroidectomy. Indirect laryngoscopy, ultrasonography and GRBAS scoring were performed preoperatively,3 days, 2 and 6 months postoperatively. Results On the third postoperative day, the mobility of the vocal folds was preserved in 52 patients and paresis were recorded in 2 patients. All patients after total thyroidectomy noted the presence of voice alteration in the absence of the postoperative paresis of the vocal folds. On the third postoperative day, the voice was impaired by all criteria of the GRBAS scale, but mainly due to roughness (85%). Sixth month postoperatively 62% of the subjects considered the voice to be altered. Asthenia was observed in 39%. On the third postoperative day indirect laryngoscopy revealed the unchanged vocal folds, the symmetrical edema and the shortening of one of the vocal folds in 56%,42% and 1.9%. Six months postoperatively, the vocal folds returned to their original form. Ultrasonography was well correlated to the results of indirect laryngoscopy. Patients with edema of the vocal folds had a significantly higher mean GRBAS grade than patients without edema. The mean GRBAS score decreased from 3.36 to 0.90, 3 days and 6 months postoperatively. Conclusion Voice alteration after total thyroidectomy is always present. Postoperative edema represents a likely main cause of voice alteration and resolves within 6 months. Ultrasonography is recommended as alternative to indirect laryngoscopy in assessing of the vocal folds in thyroid surgery patients.

The voice of aged persons is usually different from that of younger adults — a fact indicating that aging induces changes in the human larynx. The aim of this study was to perform a histomorphometric analysis of the vocal fold and of a fragment of skin in order to determine the modifications related to aging and possible differences between genders. Twenty cadavers, 10 men and 10 women, were studied. Stereological methods were used for histologic analysis. In the vocal folds, we observed a reduction of the lamina propria thickness (p < .001) and of epithelial cell density (p < .001) as a function of age. In the skin, there was a reduction of chorion thickness (p = .02) and of epithelial cell density (p = .01). The decrease in the thickness of the lamina propria of the vocal folds with aging may contribute to the vocal pattern present in the elderly. These changes were more evident in men.

AbstractThis is a modified subtotal laryngectomy. On the tumour-free side of the larynx, some posterior structures, with their neurovascular supply are preserved. The endolaryngeal mucosa is tubed in continuity with the trachea below and projects into the pharynx above. Thus a myomucosal shunt is formed. Air is directed into it by finger occlusion of the tracheal stoma.The voice production is highly satisfactory. Aspiration is prevented by constriction of the thyroarytenoid muscle which provides a valved upper end of the tube.The possibility of leaving tumour in the laryngeal remnant is eliminated by careful selection of patients, and re-confirmation of tumour extent intra-operatively and a frozen section.Eleven such operations have been performed since October 1983 for squamous cell carcinoma, some previously irradiated. None of the patients had local recurrence. Only one had an aspiration problem which later resolved. All acquired a satisfactory voice

AbstractObjectives:To evaluate the effects of antituberculosis treatment on the voice quality of laryngeal tuberculosis patients, measured by patient self-assessment, perceptual analysis and acoustic analysis.Materials and methods:A total of 14 laryngeal tuberculosis patients were enrolled. Laryngeal tuberculosis was established either by biopsy and histopathological examination or by rapid regression of the laryngeal lesions after antituberculosis medication. Before and after treatment, all patients were evaluated perceptually (on a scale of zero to three), and 12 assessed their own voices using the voice handicap index-10 scale. Acoustic analysis was performed to allow objective evaluation.Results:Patients' ages ranged from 21 to 72 years (mean, 41). The male to female ratio was 12:2. Eight patients (57 per cent) had tuberculous involvement of the epiglottis, four (28 per cent) had involvement of the aryepiglottic fold and eight (57 per cent) had involvement of the false vocal folds. The glottis was the less commonly involved part of the larynx, including true vocal folds (28 per cent, n = 4) and posterior commissure (14 per cent, n = 2). Perceptual evaluation, on a scale of zero to three, gave the patients a median score of six; after commencement of treatment, the median score decreased to two. The mean voice handicap index-10 score decreased from 24 to 12 after treatment. An obvious improvement in acoustic analytical parameters was also found following treatment.Conclusions:Antituberculosis treatment clearly improved the voice outcomes of laryngeal tuberculosis patients, according to self-assessment, perceptual analysis and acoustic analysis.


Speech is classified into voice, unvoiced and silence. The voice speech is the periodic vibration of vocal folds. Background noise affects the speech signals. In many speech applications calculation of pitch plays a major role. The paper proposes a pitch detection algorithm based on the short-time average magnitude difference function (AMDF) and the short-term autocorrelation function (ACF). Detecting the Pitch within the speech signal is important in most of all the speech related applications. Detection of Pitch is useful in identification of speaker. One solution to get detect with the pitch is by using the time domain algorithms. This paper gives idea about estimation and detection of pitch in time domain algorithm for different voice samples

The incidence of thyroid cancer in the period from 2008 to 2018 in the Russian Federation increased from 74,8 to 114,1 cases per 100,000 population. The risk of damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve during primary operations ranges from 0,5 to 23 %, with repeated operations increases to 62 %. The Volgograd regional clinical oncological dispensary uses the technique of intraoperative restoration of the function of the recurrent laryngeal nerve by means of a micro-neural anastomosis with the main trunk of the vagus nerve. We have experience in performing 6 similar operations. The description of this technique is given on the example of a clinical case. The described technique allows you to completely restore the voice and mobility of the vocal folds of the larynx. Respiratory function is fully restored, which makes it possible to avoid the formation of a tracheostomy in case of bilateral nerve damage, and if even unilateral paresis led to decompensated respiratory failure.

Objective: To investigate the risk of mental distress during the COVID-19 pandemic in individuals of the voice-speech professions and the possibility of its impact on voice function and quality of life. Materials and Methods: The study involved 33 people of voice-speech professions who were treated at the University Clinic of Zaporizhzhia State Medical University in 2020. The presence of mental disorders was determined by questionnaires using the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS). The patients were divided into 2 groups, depending on the absence and presence of significantly expressed symptoms. A specialized phoniatric examination using functional loads (measuring the time of maximum phonation (PMF), perceptual assessment of the voice according to the GRBAS scale), videostroboscopy of the larynx were carried out. The assessment of the mental impact of voice disorders on the quality of life was carried out according to the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) questionnaire. The statistical significance of the comparative indicators and the connection of their changes were established using the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Results: It was found that among the surveyed 33 people, 22 patients (group 1) had subclinical anxiety and depression, and 11 (group 2) had no significant symptoms. Patients with subclinically severe mental disorders (n = 22) showed a significant increase in the emotional indicator by 85.37% (p≤0.01). A high positive relationship was found between subclinical levels of anxiety and depression and disturbances in the phonatory cycle of the larynx. When conducting a Spearman correlation analysis between the data of perceptual assessment of the voice according to the GRBAS system, data of video stroboscopy of the larynx, indicators of anxiety and depression, and the results of the VHI questionnaire, a positive relationship of a high degree was established between the level of anxiety and vibratory insufficiency of the vocal folds (rs=0.95; p≤0.05), negative with the Navy (rs=-0.59; p≤0.05), as well as physical (rs=0.75; p≤0.05) and emotional (rs=0.79; p≤0.05) components of average quality of life. The data obtained indicate a significant effect of subclinical disorders of the mental state on impaired voice function and the emotional component of the quality of life in persons of vocal-speech professions. Conclusions: Screening of mental health in persons of voice-speech professions together with a baseline assessment of voice function and quality of life are important steps for monitoring potential voice disorders and the formation of risk groups in order to carry out preventive and therapeutic measures for voice disorders.
