Ubiquity, heterogeneity and dense deployment of sensors have yielded the Internet of Things (IoT) concept, which is an integral component of various smart spaces including smart cities. Applications and services in a smart city ecosystem aim at minimizing the cost and maximizing the quality of living. Among these services, waste management is a unique service that covers both aspects. To this end, in this paper, we propose a WSN-driven system for smart waste management in urban areas. In our proposed framework, the waste bins are equipped with sensors that continuously monitor the waste level and trigger alarms that are wirelessly communicated to a cloud platform to actuate the municipal agents, i.e., waste collection trucks. We formulate an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model to find the best set of trajectory-truck with the objectives of minimum cost or minimum delay. In order for the trajectory assistance to work in real time, we propose three heuristics, one of which is a greedy one. Through simulations, we show that the ILP formulation can provide a baseline reference to the heuristics, whereas the non-greedy heuristics can significantly outperform the greedy approach regarding cost and delay under moderate waste accumulation scenarios.

Purpose: This paper raises theoretical issues related to the functioning of cities that are determined as smart in order to find a better operational definition for further research. Design/methodology/approach: In search of the essence of the term, the paper refers to variety of definitions of smart city, and also to the theoretical models in operation enabling the measurement and comparison of indicators among urban areas in the different world locations. The analysis was performed on three rankings: Cities in Motion Index, Mercer Quality of Living, Arcadis The Sustainable Index. Findings: The conclusions indicate that the Smart City concept is connected with sustainable development more than to the quality of life. The city rankings concerning the highest life quality is completely different from the hierarchy of smart cities. Originality/value: The paper extends the definition of smart city and it may be valuable for researchers who develop the concept of smart city in their research.

The city of Bogor is one of the cities that has implemented the concept of smart city and is one of the centers of attention for the movement of people. The implementation of smart cities often has difficulty in applying various aspects. One of them is about environmental problems in urban areas that are very vulnerable to various damages such as garbage. One effort to improve the quality of the urban environment is the concept of Smart Environment. This study uses qualitative research with a descriptive approach. This research results that the condition of Bogor City which is dense makes the volume of waste increasing. In this case, waste management efforts such as the Trash Bank, 3R Trash Program, and impelemntation of waste management of IT based. However, in its application the City of Bogor experienced constraints on public awareness and participation. Keywords: Waste Management, Smart City, Smart Environment

From earliest cities to the present, spatial division into residential zones and neighbourhoods is the universal feature of urban areas. This study explored issue of measuring neighbourhoods through spatial autocorrelation method based on Moran's I index in respect of achieving to best neighbourhoods' model for forming cities smarter. The research carried out by selection of 35 neighbourhoods only within central part of traditional city of Kerman in Iran. The results illustrate, 75% of neighbourhoods' area in the inner city of Kerman had clustered pattern, and it shows reduction in Moran's index is associated with disproportional distribution of density and increasing in Moran's I and Z-score have monotonic relation with more dense areas and clustered pattern. It may be more efficient for urban planner to focus on spatial autocorrelation to foster neighbourhood cohesion rather than emphasis on suburban area. It is recommended characteristics of historic neighbourhoods can be successfully linked to redevelopment plans toward making city smarter, and also people's quality of life can be related to the way that neighbourhoods' patterns are defined.

The fast transformation of the urban centers, pushed by the impacts of climatic changes and the dramatic events of the COVID-19 Pandemic, will profoundly influence our daily mobility. This resulted scenario is expected to favor adopting cleaner and flexible modal solutions centered on bicycles and scooters, especially as last-mile options. However, as the use of bicycles has rapidly increased, cyclists have been subject to adverse conditions that may affect their health and safety when cycling in urban areas. Therefore, whereas cities should implement mechanisms to monitor and evaluate adverse conditions in cycling paths, cyclists should have some effective mechanism to visualize the indirect quality of cycling paths, eventually supporting choosing more appropriate routes. Therefore, this article proposes a comprehensive multi-parameter system based on multiple independent subsystems, covering all phases of data collecting, formatting, transmission, and processing related to the monitoring, evaluating, and visualizing the quality of cycling paths in the perspective of adverse conditions that affect cyclist. The formal interactions of all modules are carefully described, as well as implementation and deployment details. Additionally, a case study is considered for a large city in Brazil, demonstrating how the proposed system can be adopted in a real scenario.

Zimbabwe’s urban areas are choking under the weight of over-crowdedness amidstdilapidated infrastructure that is characterised by constant service failure. The water andsewer systems of the country’s major urban centres are on the verge of collapse, thusputting millions of people in danger of consuming contaminated water, including thatfrom underground sources. Waste management and water supply problems manifestthemselves as challenges bedevilling many an urban area in the country. The quality andquantity of water supplied in Zimbabwe’s urban centres has plummeted in recent yearsand has assumed crisis proportions owing to the difficult economic situation and otherchallenges faced by the country. The situation is desperate and dire, as is evidenced by thepoor quality of delivered water, severe water rationing and the outbreak of water-bornediseases in the urban areas dotted across the country. The situation demands and dictatesthat solutions be proffered as a matter of urgency.The recent outbreak of epidemics hasbeen blamed on lack of access to safe water and poor sanitation, two crucial factors incontrolling the spread of diseases. An overly bureaucratic environment, where decisionsand processes take longer, makes life complicated for poor urban residents. Such ascenario motivated the researchers to examine the problem with a view to suggest waysand means of intervening to mitigate and resolve the problem. It emerged from thefindings that the problem is multifaceted in nature, hence a whole range of measures needto be adopted if a long-term solution is to be provided.

Dustbins (or Garbage Bins, Trash Cans, whatever you name them) are small containers of plastic or metal used on a temporary basis to store trash (or waste). They are also used for the collection of waste in houses, workplaces, highways, parks, etc. Littering is a major crime in some countries, and public waste bins are also the only way to dispose of small waste. Usually, using different bins for handling wet or dry, recyclable or non-recyclable waste is a common practice. From an ETS perspective, smart waste collection can help municipalities and private waste management companies avoid the need for collection sites, waste disposal facilities and waste treatment plants. As communities increasingly rely on smart city technology to improve, among other things, the quality of life of their residents and the environment, city leaders recognize that smart waste management can also help them achieve sustainability goals such as zero waste and improve services to residents, while improving service to residents. As an example, Development of Some solar-powered bins and recycling bins are already equipped with sensors that analyze data on what is disposed of or recycled and notify collectors when the bin is too full and needs to be picked up. These developed Smart waste management solutions use sensors placed in waste bins to measure levels, notify municipal waste collection services, when the bins are ready to be emptied, and also notify municipal waste collection with a ton has been emptied. Therefore, the solar-powered of sensors based smart waste monitoring system is more and more useful to the current smart cities policies under the smart city project works.

In recent years, enormous amounts of digital data have been generated. In parallel, data collection, storage, and analysis technologies have developed. Recently, there has been an increasing trend of people moving towards urban areas. By 2030 more than 60% of the world's population will live in an urban environment. Urban areas are big data resource because they include millions of citizens, technological devices, and vehicles which generate data continuously. Besides, rapid urbanization brings many challenges, such as environmental pollution, traffic congestion, health problems, energy management, etc. Some policies for countries are required to cope with urbanization problems. One of these policies is to build smart cities. Smart cities integrate information and communication technology and various physical devices connected to the network (the internet of things or IoT) to both improve the quality of government services and citizen welfare. This chapter presents a literature review of big data, smart cities, IoT, green-IoT concepts, using technology and methods, and applications worldwide.

In the ‘industry 4.0’ era, the phenomenon of digitalization of smart cities has gained increasing prominence, as it has the potential to address the problem of resource optimization and the pressure of demand of the growing urban population. In the past, smart city initiatives may not have created desired impacts as these initiatives were limited in scope, focusing on physical digital integration of the underlying systems of cities and of their citizens. This article examines the success factors that affect the digitalization of smart cities based on secondary research. To achieve smart cities’ core objectives of increasing quality of living, providing efficient and optimal services, thereby making the functioning of the city smart through digitalization, it is essential to look at these critical success factors, namely, sustainability, ecosystems and digital citizen. The article points out important elements such as lack of governance of sustainability, methods and processes to enhance participation of digital citizens and inadequate knowledge about structures and value creation through ecosystems that would need to be addressed while digitalizing smart cities. Given the required policy attention and focus, these factors would be expected to make smart cities sustainable, improve the quality of life of citizens and create new economic opportunities, while digitalizing them.


The smart cities concept is modern and shall continue to mitigate the future demand of houses for the burgeoning flocking population from rural to urban. These complexes are prototypes of present smart cities, energy efficient green mansions nearer to large metropolis which is fulfilling prompt accesses to civic usages (like connectivity, Marketing, electricity, water, drainage and water supply) and maintains equilibrium between population, economy, resources, and environment. In contrary metropolis face mammoth challenges of space, health, quality of living,stress, pollution and hassles of city life and comforts.In this project we tried our best to plan a model of a satellite city in Jatni area. The GIS and the remote sensing method is used to conceptualize the places , commuters, dwellings etc. The 2D planning with AUTOCAD software, the 3D plan of the flats with REVIT software for Building Information Modelling architecture was used to conceptualize an ideal satellite city in and around 15 to 30km from centre of Bhubaneswar consisting of area 44300Ha accommodating 10500 inhabitants fortheir apartments, duplexes and supporting staffs

Resumen: El crecimiento de la población en las zonas urbanas es una dificultad que se genera a nivel mundial y que requiere de tácticas que permitan contrarrestar sus efectos. Las ciudades inteligentes son vistas como una excelente solución a esta problemática ya que genera soluciones viables al apoyarse en la tecnología para gestionar diversos aspectos dentro de los que se incluye el entorno urbano. Este trabajo presenta una revisión de investigaciones que involucran la gestión urbana dentro de las ciudades inteligentes. Analizando el papel que cumple la gestión urbana dentro las ciudades inteligentes, lo que nos muestra que la gestión urbana apoyada de las TIC coopera visiblemente en la conformación de las ciudades inteligentes logrando mejorar la calidad de vida de sus habitantes. ___Palabras clave: ciudad inteligente, gestión urbana, planificación urbana, TIC. ___Abstract: Population growth in urban areas is a wordwide-generated difficulty and requires of tactics to counteract its effects. Smart cities are seen as an excellent solution to this problem, because they generate viable solutions to rely on technology to manage various aspects within which the urban environment is included. This paper presents a review of research involving urban management in smart cities.
