Submerged floating tunnel (SFT) is a new type of transportation infrastructure for crossing sea straits in relatively deeper water. Compared with the fixed tunnel, the main challenge in designing a SFT is the stability maintaining in a complex hydrodynamic environment, especially for the wave-induced dynamic load. In this study, a series of systematic experiments were conducted to investigate the 2D motion characteristics (i.e., heave, sway and roll) of the SFT exposed to regular waves. The movement of the SFT model is measured by the image processing method which is a noncontact measurement. The experimental observation of SFT motion during the process of wave and SFT interaction is described in detail, and the influence of several governing parameters is thoroughly analyzed, including the wave height and period, submergence depth, buoyancy to weight ratio (BWR), and the mooring line angle. The results show that the motion amplitudes of SFT increase with the wave height increasing. The effect of wave period is related to the natural period of the structure. The sway, heave and roll of the SFT submerged beneath the water surface are much smaller than that of the SFT on the water surface. With the increase of BWR, the motion of SFT decreases. The motion amplitude increases with mooring line angle increasing. Finally, empirical equations are proposed to estimate the motion characteristics of the SFT.

The effect of aircushion division on the motions of large floating structures is studied by means of calculations based on a linear three-dimensional potential method. A linear adiabatic law is used to describe the air pressures inside the cushions. The water surface within the aircushions and the mean wetted surface are modelled by panel distributions representing oscillating sources. The behaviour of different types of aircushion supported structures is described and compared with that of a rectangular barge having the same dimensions. Successively, the aircushion theory, motion characteristics, wave frequency forces and moments, mean second order drift forces and surrounding wave fields are discussed. The results show that aircushions significantly influence the stability and behaviour of large floating structures.

AbstractThe main challenge of the stability analysis for general polynomial control systems is that non-convex terms exist in the stability conditions, which hinders solving the stability conditions numerically. Most approaches in the literature impose constraints on the Lyapunov function candidates or the non-convex related terms to circumvent this problem. Motivated by this difficulty, in this paper, we confront the non-convex problem directly and present an iterative stability analysis to address the long-standing problem in general polynomial control systems. Different from the existing methods, no constraints are imposed on the polynomial Lyapunov function candidates. Therefore, the limitations on the Lyapunov function candidate and non-convex terms are eliminated from the proposed analysis, which makes the proposed method more general than the state-of-the-art. In the proposed approach, the stability for the general polynomial model is analyzed and the original non-convex stability conditions are developed. To solve the non-convex stability conditions through the sum-of-squares programming, the iterative stability analysis is presented. The feasible solutions are verified by the original non-convex stability conditions to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the general polynomial system. The detailed simulation example is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The simulation results show that the proposed approach is more capable to find feasible solutions for the general polynomial control systems when compared with the existing ones.

To study motion range changes with wave condition and motion relationship between cages, physical model experiments were carried out. The authors designed 2 models of composite-type sea cages. Experimental data obtained by the CCD data acquisition system. The experiment results showed that 1.in the same period, horizontal motion range,vertical motion range and inclination changes of float collar increase with wave height; 2.In the same wave height, horizontal motion range of the float collar increases with period; 3.The laws between vertical motion and period are not obvious 4.The laws between inclination changes and period are not obvious 5.Motion range of the first cage along the direction of waves is less than other cages.

As the offshore industry is developing into deeper and deeper water, station keeping technics are becoming more and more important to the industry. Based on the dynamic positioning system, the thruster assisted mooring system (TAMS) is developed, which consisted of mooring lines and thrusters. The main function of the TAMS is to hold a structure against wind wave and current loads with its thruster and cables, which is mainly evaluated by the holding capacity of the system. The arrangement of the mooring lines (location of anchor or the mooring line angle relative to platform) will directly affect the TAMS holding capacity because of the influence of the directions of the mooring forces. So finding out an optimum arrangement of the mooring lines is essential since the performance of the TAMS depends greatly on the arrangement of the mooring lines. The TAMS of a semi-submersible platform, which is studied in this paper, consisted of eight mooring lines. By fixing the layout of the thrusters and changing the location of each mooring line for every case, the performances of the TAMS are analyzed. The platform motions, mooring line tensions and power consumptions are compared to obtain the optimum arrangement of mooring lines, and thus a thruster assisted mooring system with a better performance can be achieved. Time domain simulation is carried out in this paper to obtain the results.

For generating electricity, direct-drive wave energy converters (WECs) with linear permanent magnet generators (LPMGs) have advantages in terms of efficiency, simplicity, and force-to-weight ratio over WEC with rotary generators. However, the converter’s work under approaching-real wave conditions should be investigated. This paper studies the performance of a pico-scale WEC with two different LPMGs under unidirectional long-crested random waves. Different significant wave heights (using data in the Southern Ocean of Yogyakarta, Indonesia) and peak frequencies are tested. The JONSWAP energy spectrum is used to extract the wave elevations, while the MSS toolbox in MATLAB Simulink is employed to solve the floater’s dynamic responses. Next, the translator movements are extracted and combined with the flux distribution from FEMM simulation and analytical calculation, and the output powers are obtained. An experiment is conducted to test the output under constant speed. The results show for both designs, different tested significant wave height values produce higher output powers than peak frequency variation, but there is no specific trend on them. Meanwhile, the peak frequency is inversely proportional to the output power. Elimination of the non-facing events results in increasing output power under both parameters’ variation, with higher significant wave height resulting in a bigger increase. The semi iron-cored LPMG produces lower power loss and higher efficiency.

Abstract We develop a fully-coupled time-domain hydro-elasticity model for the Submerged Floating Tunnel (SFT) based on the Discrete-Module-Beam (DMB) method. Frequency-domain simulation based on 3D potential theory results in multibody’s hydrodynamic coefficients and excitation forces for tunnel sections. Subsequently, we build the time-domain model with the multibody Cummins equation and external stiffness matrix from the Euler-Bernoulli and Saint-Venant torsion theories. We establish the mooring line model with rod theory and couple components with translational springs at their respective connection locations. We then compare the dynamic motions, wave forces, and mooring tensions between the present and Morison-equation-based elastic models under regular wave excitations at different submergence depths. The present model is especially important for the shallowly submerged tunnel in which the Morison model shows exaggerated motions, especially at high-frequency range.

Purpose This study aims to describe the preparation of antimicrobial material usable in 3D printing of medical devices. Despite the wealth of technological progress at the time of the crisis caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus: Virus that causes current Pandemic situation (COVID-19), the global population had long been exposed beforehand to an acute absence of essential medical devices. As a response, a new type of composite materials intended for rapid prototyping, based on layered silicate saponite (Sap), antimicrobial dye phloxine B (PhB) and thermoplastics, has been recently developed. Design/methodology/approach Sap was modified with a cationic surfactant and subsequently functionalized with PhB. The hybrid material in powder form was then grounded with polyethylene terephthalate-glycol (PETG) or polylactic acid (PLA) in a precisely defined weight ratio and extruded into printing filaments. The stability and level of cytotoxicity of these materials in various physiological environments simulating the human body have been studied. The applicability of these materials in bacteria and a yeast-infected environment was evaluated. Findings Ideal content of the hybrid material, with respect to thermoplastic, was 15 weight %. Optimal printing temperature and speed, with respect to maintaining antimicrobial activity of the prepared materials, were T = 215°C at 50 mm/s for PETG/SapPhB and T = 230°C at 40 mm/s for PLA/SapPhB. 3 D-printed air filters made of these materials could keep inner air flow at 63.5% and 76.8% of the original value for the PLA/SapPhB and PETG/SapPhB, respectively, whereas the same components made without PhB had a 100% reduction of airflow. Practical implications The designed materials can be used for rapid prototyping of medical devices. Originality/value The new materials have been immediately used in the construction of an emergency lung ventilator, Q-vent, which has been used in different countries during the COVID-19 crisis.

Abstract The use of high strength aluminium alloys, such as 6XXX and 7XXX series, is continuously increasing for automotive applications in view of their good strength-to-weight ratio. Their formability at room temperature is limited and they are thus often formed at high temperatures to enable production of complex geometries. Critical challenges during hot forming of aluminium are the occurrence of severe adhesion and material transfer onto the forming tools. This negatively affects the tool life and the quality of the produced parts. In general, the main mechanisms involved in the occurrence of material transfer of aluminium alloys at high temperature are still not clearly understood. Therefore, this study is focussed on understanding of the friction and wear behaviour during interaction of Al6016 alloy and three different tool steels in as-received and polished state. The tribotests were carried out under dry and lubricated conditions, with two distinct lubricants, using a reciprocating friction and wear tester. The worn surfaces were analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed a high dependence of friction and wear behaviour on the tool steel roughness as well as on the stability of the lubricant films. Tribolayers were found to develop in the contact zone and their capacity to improve the tribological behaviour is seen to be drastically impacted by the surface roughness of the tool steel. When the tribolayers failed, severe adhesion took place and led to high and unstable friction as well as material transfer to the tool steel.

Dermatophyte fungal infections are difficult to treat because they need long-term treatments. 4-Nerolidylcatechol (4-NC) is a compound found in Piper umbellatum that has been reported to demonstrate significant antifungal activity, but is easily oxidizable. Due to this characteristic, the incorporation in nanostructured systems represents a strategy to guarantee the compound’s stability compared to the isolated form and the possibility of improving antifungal activity. The objective of this study was to incorporate 4-NC into polymeric nanoparticles to evaluate, in vitro and in vivo, the growth inhibition of Microsporum canis. 4-NC was isolated from fresh leaves of P. umbellatum, and polymer nanoparticles of polycaprolactone were developed by nanoprecipitation using a 1:5 weight ratio (drug:polymer). Nanoparticles exhibited excellent encapsulation efficiency, and the antifungal activity was observed in nanoparticles with 4-NC incorporated. Polymeric nanoparticles can be a strategy employed for decreased cytotoxicity, increasing the stability and solubility of substances, as well as improving the efficacy of 4-NC.

The coastal and offshore structures are some times exposed to group of waves with successive higher wave elevations exceeding the significant wave height, which is considered to be vulnerable for the stability of the structures. Hence, the knowledge on the existence and frequency of occurrence of ocean wave groups at a particular region of interest is important for the design of the ocean structures. In the present study, the wave groups were simulated theoretically and the same was generated in the laboratory wave flume. The measured wave elevations were analysed through statistical, spectral and wavelet approaches to detect the existence of the groupiness.
