The article presents an original way of getting porous and mechanically strong CaSiO3-HAp ceramics, which is highly desirable for bone-ceramic implants in bone restoration surgery. The method combines wet and solid-phase approaches of inorganic synthesis: sol-gel (template) technology to produce the amorphous xonotlite (Ca6Si6O17·2OH) as the raw material, followed by its spark plasma sintering–reactive synthesis (SPS-RS) into ceramics. Formation of both crystalline wollastonite (CaSiO3) and hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) occurs “in situ” under SPS conditions, which is the main novelty of the method, due to combining the solid-phase transitions of the amorphous xonotlite with the chemical reaction within the powder mixture between CaO and CaHPO4. Formation of pristine HAp and its composite derivative with wollastonite was studied by means of TGA and XRD with the temperatures of the “in situ” interactions also determined. A facile route to tailor a macroporous structure is suggested, with polymer (siloxane-acrylate latex) and carbon (fibers and powder) fillers being used as the pore-forming templates. Microbial tests were carried out to reveal the morphological features of the bacterial film Pseudomonas aeruginosa that formed on the surface of the ceramics, depending on the content of HAp (0, 20, and 50 wt%).

Dependence of the mechanical properties of PM extruded titanium with the silicon nitride (Si3N4) on solid phase decomposition of Si3N4 was investigated. Si3N4 particles within Ti composite powder were decomposed during spark plasma sintering at 1223 K with 30 MPa pressure for 3.6 ks; and then, decomposition by-products of nitrogen and silicon atoms were defused into titanium matrix. The extruded Ti-1.0 mass% Si3N4 composite showed ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1139 MPa, and yield stress (0.2%YS) of 1065 MPa. UTS and 0.2%YS of P/M extruded Ti-1.0 mass% Si3N4 composite were 2 and 2.5 times compared to extruded pure Ti powder material, respectively. It was considered that the solid solution strengthening of both nitrogen and silicon originated from Si3N4 caused the high strength of PM extruded Ti-1.0 mass% Si3N4 composite.

AbstractA nano-laminated Y3Si2C2 ceramic material was successfully synthesized via an in situ reaction between YH2 and SiC using spark plasma sintering technology. A MAX phase-like ternary layered structure of Y3Si2C2 was observed at the atomic-scale by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The lattice parameters calculated from both X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction patterns are in good agreement with the reported theoretical results. The nano-laminated fracture of kink boundaries, delamination, and slipping were observed at the tip of the Vickers indents. The elastic modulus and Vickers hardness of Y3Si2C2 ceramics (with 5.5 wt% Y2O3) sintered at 1500 °C were 156 and 6.4 GPa, respectively. The corresponding values of thermal and electrical conductivity were 13.7 W·m-1·K-1 and 6.3×105 S·m-1, respectively.

This study investigates the impact of carbon on the kinetics of the spark plasma sintering (SPS) of nano- and submicron powders WC-10wt.%Co. Carbon, in the form of graphite, was introduced into powders by mixing. The activation energy of solid-phase sintering was determined for the conditions of isothermal and continuous heating. It has been demonstrated that increasing the carbon content leads to a decrease in the fraction of η-phase particles and a shift of the shrinkage curve towards lower heating temperatures. It has been established that increasing the graphite content in nano- and submicron powders has no significant effect on the SPS activation energy for “mid-range” heating temperatures, QS(I). The value of QS(I) is close to the activation energy of grain-boundary diffusion in cobalt. It has been demonstrated that increasing the content of graphite leads to a significant decrease in the SPS activation energy, QS(II), for “higher-range” heating temperatures due to lower concentration of tungsten atoms in cobalt-based γ-phase. It has been established that the sintering kinetics of fine-grained WC-Co hard alloys is limited by the intensity of diffusion creep of cobalt (Coble creep).

Abstract In the oil-water separation, the difficulty to recover and low hydrophobicity are key limitation factors for practical applications. In this paper, we design Cobalt ferrite hybird Polystyrene divinylbenzene microspheres (CoFe2O4/SDB), which were conducted through in-situ suspension copolymerization. The CoFe2O4 is prepared by low heat solid phase sol-gel method. It had been found that the CoFe2O4/SDB have a spherical structure, good adsorption behavior, highly hydrophobicity and even superhydrophobicity. The adsorption capacity of CoFe2O4/SDB composites could absorb kerosene up to 6 times of its own weight. Interestingly, kerosene can be easily separated from the surface of CoFe2O4/SDB particles with ultrasonic operation. CoFe2O4/SDB particles can still maintain good hydrophobicity and adsorption capacity of kerosene after 11 cycles after drying. With in situ polymerization of St、DVB and CoFe2O4, CoFe2O4/SDB as a promising absorbent of kerosene which has great potential in application of oil-water separation.
