Static bending, free vibration and buckling of functionally graded porous micro-plates are investigated using a general third order plate theory. In addition, analytical solutions are obtained using the Navier method. The effect of the material length scale factor and the variation of material property through the thickness direction of plates are considered as well as porosity effects. Three different porosity distributions are considered and the effects of porosity variations are examined in the framework of a general third order plate theory. Numerical results show that the effect of each distribution of porosity is distinguished due to coupling between the heterogeneity of the material properties and the variation of porosity.

AbstractIn this paper, a novel size-dependent functionally graded (FG) cylindrical shell model is developed based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory in conjunction with the Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity theory. The new model containing a nonlocal parameter, a material length scale parameter, and several surface elastic constants can capture three typical types of size effects simultaneously, which are the nonlocal stress effect, the strain gradient effect, and the surface energy effects. With the help of Hamilton’s principle and first-order shear deformation theory, the non-classical governing equations and related boundary conditions are derived. By using the proposed model, the free vibration problem of FG cylindrical nanoshells with material properties varying continuously through the thickness according to a power-law distribution is analytically solved, and the closed-form solutions for natural frequencies under various boundary conditions are obtained. After verifying the reliability of the proposed model and analytical method by comparing the degenerated results with those available in the literature, the influences of nonlocal parameter, material length scale parameter, power-law index, radius-to-thickness ratio, length-to-radius ratio, and surface effects on the vibration characteristic of functionally graded cylindrical nanoshells are examined in detail.

In the current study, the nonlinear free vibration behavior of microbeams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is investigated based on the strain gradient elasticity theory and von Karman geometric nonlinearity. The nonclassical beam model is developed in the context of the Timoshenko beam theory which contains material length scale parameters to take the size effect into account. The model can reduce to the beam models based on the modified couple stress theory (MCST) and the classical beam theory (CBT) if two or all material length scale parameters are taken to be zero, respectively. The power low function is considered to describe the volume fraction of the ceramic and metal phases of the FGM microbeams. On the basis of Hamilton’s principle, the higher-order governing differential equations are obtained which are discretized along with different boundary conditions using the generalized differential quadrature method. The dimensionless linear and nonlinear frequencies of microbeams with various values of material property gradient index are calculated and compared with those obtained based on the MCST and an excellent agreement is found. Moreover, comparisons between the various beam models on the basis of linear and nonlinear types of strain gradient theory (SGT) and MCST are presented and it is observed that the difference between the frequencies obtained by the SGT and MCST is more significant for lower values of dimensionless length scale parameter.

In this paper, an edge-based smoothed stabilized discrete shear gap method (ES-DSG) is integrated with the C0-type high-order shear deformation plate theory (C0-HSDT) for free vibration and static analyses of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) plates. The material properties of FG-CNTRC are assumed to be graded through the thickness direction according to several distributions of the volume fraction of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The stiffness formulation of the ES-DSG based on C0-HSDT is performed by using the strain smoothing technique over the smoothing domains associated with edges of elements. This hence does not require shear correction factors. The accuracy and reliability of the proposed method are confirmed in several numerical examples.

In this study, a simple size-dependent isogeometric approach for bending analysis of functionally graded (FG) microplates using the modified strain gradient theory (MSGT), simple first-order shear deformation theory (sFSDT) and isogeometric analysis is presented for the first time. The present approach reduces one variable when comparing with the original first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) within five variables and only considers three material length scale parameters (MLSPs) to capture size effects. Effective material properties as Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and density mass are computed by a rule of mixture. Thanks to the principle of virtual work, the essential equations which are solved by the isogeometric analysis method, are derived. Rectangular and circular FG microplates with different boundary conditions, volume fraction and material length scale parameter are exampled to evaluate the deflections of FG microplates.

Finite element method is used to investigate the free vibration and harmonic analysis of functionally graded plates. The material properties of the plates are assumed to vary continuously through their thickness direction according to a power-law distribution of the volume fractions of the plate constituents. The four noded shell 181 elements are used to analyse the functionally graded plates. The aim is to fill the void in the available literature with respect to the free vibration results of Functionally Graded plates. Convergence and Comparison studies with respect to the number of nodes has been carried out using FEM. The natural frequency, mode shape and harmonic analysis of FG plate has been determined using finite element package ANSYS.

AbstractBased on the Mindlin’s first-order shear deformation plate theory this paper focuses on the free vibration behavior of functionally graded nanocomposite plates reinforced by aligned and straight single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The material properties of simply supported functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced (FGCNTR) plates are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction. The effective material properties at a point are estimated by either the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach or the extended rule of mixture. Two types of symmetric carbon nanotubes (CNTs) volume fraction profiles are presented in this paper. The equations of motion and related boundary conditions are derived using the Hamilton’s principle. A semi-analytical solution composed of generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) method, as an efficient and accurate numerical method, and series solution is adopted to solve the equations of motions. The primary contribution of the present work is to provide a comparative study of the natural frequencies obtained by extended rule of mixture and Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka method. The detailed parametric studies are carried out to study the influences various types of the CNTs volume fraction profiles, geometrical parameters and CNTs volume fraction on the free vibration characteristics of FGCNTR plates. The results reveal that the prediction methods of effective material properties have an insignificant influence of the variation of the frequency parameters with the plate aspect ratio and the CNTs volume fraction.

Abstract In the present article, static analysis of thin functionally graded micro-plates, based on Kirchhoff plate theory, is investigated. Utilizing the strain gradient theory and principle of minimum total potential energy, governing equations of rectangular micro-plates, subjected to distributed load, are explored. In accordance with functionally graded distribution of material properties through the thickness, higher-order governing equations are coupled in terms of displacement fields. Introducing a novel methodology, governing equations are decoupled, with special privilege of solving analytically. These new equations are solved for micro-plates with Levy boundary conditions. It is shown that neutral plane in functionally graded micro-plate is moved from midplane to a new coordinate in thickness direction. It is shown that considering micro-structures effects affects the governing equations and boundary conditions. Finally, the effects of material properties, micro-structures, boundary conditions and dimensions are expounded on the static response of micro-plate. Results show that increasing the length scale parameter and FGM index increases the rigidity of micro-plate. In addition, it is concluded that using classical theories for study of micro-structures leads to inaccurate results.

In this study, the strain gradient theory is employed to derive governing equations of motion of a functionally graded Timoshenko’s sandwich microbeam resting on Pasternak’s foundation. The microbeam is including a micro-core and two piezoelectric face-sheets on top and bottom. The plate is actuated with applied electric potential at top of piezoelectric face-sheets. The governing equations of motion are derived using Hamilton’s principle and strain gradient theory. After derivation of governing equations of motion, the problem is solved for three classes of analysis including wave propagation, free vibration and bending analysis. The numerical results are presented to reflect the effect of important parameters such as wave number, applied voltage, inhomogeneous index, parameters of foundation and material length-scale parameters on the different responses. The obtained results indicated that changing material length-scale parameters leads to a stiffer structure that increase natural frequencies and decreases transverse deflection and maximum electric potential.

AbstractThis paper shows an analysis of the free vibration of functionally graded simply supported nanoplate. The nonlocal four variables shear deformation plate theory is used to predict the free vibration frequencies of functionally graded nanoplate simply supported using non-local elasticity theory with the introduction of small-scale effects. The effect of the material properties, thickness-length ratio, aspect ratio, the exponent of the power law, the vibration mode is presented, the current solutions are compared to those obtained by other researchers. Equilibrium equations are obtained using the virtual displacements principle. P-FGM Power law is used to have a distribution of material properties that vary across the thickness. The results are in good agreement with those of the literature.
