Falls from height (FFH) represent a distinct form of blunt trauma in urban areas. This study aimed to identify independent predictors of in-hospital mortality after accidental or intentional falls in different age groups. We conducted a retrospective study of all patients consecutively admitted after a fall in eight years, recording mechanism, intentionality, height of fall, age, site, classification of injuries, and outcome. We built multivariate regression models to identify independent predictors of mortality. A total of 948 patients with 82 deaths were observed. Among the accidental falls, mortality was 5.2%, whereas intentional jumpers showed a mortality of 20.4%. The death rate was higher for increasing heights, age >65, suicidal attempts, and injuries with AIS ≥3 (Abbreviated Injury Scale). Older patients reported a higher in-hospital mortality rate. Multivariate analysis identified height of fall, dynamic and severe head and chest injuries as independent predictors of mortality in the young adults’ group (18–65 years). For patients aged more than 65 years, the only risk factor independently related to death was severe head injuries. Our data demonstrate that in people older than 65, the height of fall may not represent a predictor of death.

Background and aim Motorcycle accidents are one of the leading causes of road traffic injuries and mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the common patterns of major injuries associated with motorcycle accidents in patients attending Mansoura University Emergency Hospital in Egypt, and to measure the magnitude of the problem in our community. Patients and methods Patients involved in motorcycle crashes who were admitted to the hospital during August 2014 to April 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. All age groups and both genders were included. Results Two hundred patients (181 males) with a mean age of 30.7 ± 10.5 years were included with the majority of patients aged 20–40 years. Head injuries were the most frequent fatal injuries (9/61) patients; orthopedic injuries were the most common injuries, occurring in 78.5% of victims. Multisystem injuries occurred in 28% of patients. None of the motorcyclists involved in accidents wore helmets. Conclusion Motorcycle accidents are a common cause of road traffic injuries and mortalities in Egypt, occurring mainly in males aged 20–40 years. The majority of victims had an isolated trauma to single body system. Orthopedic injuries were the most common and least fatal type of injuries. The highest fatalities were among patients with chest injuries then patients with head injuries. None of the victims wore protective clothing or helmets at the time of accident.

We present the structure and first results of the "Thales" project on site classification in Greece. The aim of the project is twofold: to develop and present a methodology for the characterization and classification of site conditions based on their geological, geomorphological and geophysical characteristics and to apply the proposed methodology to case studies in Greece, including the urban areas of Xanthi, Edessa and Grevena. In particular, the units described on a surficial geological map will be correlated to shear-wave velocity data, corresponding to the upper 30m (Vs30) of the soil column, aiming to produce first order maps to help practitioners and provide the tools to realistically predict ground motions triggered by an earthquake. The classification will be based on information provided by borehole logs, where velocity profiles were measured and will be validated using the three case studies. The outcome of the project will be usable by national agencies and decision makers for urban planning.

This study was descriptive and retrospective in order to get an overview of cases of scorpion envenomation in the State of Goiás between 2003 and 2012, with the possible variables that influenced the accident. Data were collected in data collection in the notification forms of the Toxicological Information Center of Goiás (CIT). We analyzed 6,046 cases of scorpion envenomation to the state in this time frame. Where these 71.65% of the cases occurred in urban areas and 51.88% in males. The sting of the region prevailed in hands, feet and fingers, totaling 72.83%. The time between the accident and medical care was mostly less than three hours. According to the clinical picture, 72.42% were classified as mild and 81.17% of the cases had healing as prognosis. As for treatment with antivenom, 37% made use of serum, 38% did not use and 25% was not informed. 2,237 ampoules serum used including antiescorpiônico, antiarachnid and antivenom for treatment. Correlating SINAN data and collected in CIT chips, there was a discrepancy between the two regarding the amount every year. The antivenom revealed problems as the lack of classification of cases and the excessive use of SAE. Assessing the genders and cases hit area sees highly suggestive that the scorpion’s relationship to the process of domestication. The difference in data between SINAN and CIT suggests that there is a failure in communication between the two systems.

Objective To identify the normal range, distribution, and age-dependent differences in the cephalic index (CI) of Korean children with normal brain development and develop a classification of the current CI for Korean children up to 7 years of age. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 1,389 children who visited our hospital in the emergency room between October 2015 and September 2020 because of suspected head injuries. Finally, 1,248 children (741 male and 507 female) were enrolled after excluding abnormal medical or familial history and divided into 10 groups by age. The CI was measured using brain computed tomography and calculated according to the following equation: cephalic width/cephalic length×100.Results The averages of CI by age groups were as follows: 89.29 (0–3 months group, n=44); 91.41 (4–6 months group, n=63); 89.68 (7–9 months group, n=62); 87.52 (10–12 months group, n=41); 87.64 (≥2 years group, n=243); 86.63 (≥3 years group, n=178); 85.62 (≥4 years group, n=232); 85.77 (≥5 years group, n=201); 85.15 (≥6 years group, n=75); and 85.34 (≥7 years group, n=109). The CI of Korean children in normal brain development was confirmed to be large, showing a notable difference compared to that of Caucasians. Conclusion The current CI of Korean children will provide a valuable reference for diagnosing and treating cranial deformities, especially dolichocephaly and brachycephaly as well as to monitor the morphology of the cranium in clinics.

Abstract: Nowadays, the incidence of traffic accidents increases annually. Injuries caused by traffic accidents show specific patterns, which differ from that of injuries due to other causes. Information of injury patterns due to accidents can be very useful in the management of treatment. The aim of this retrospective study is to describe the kinds of injuries in autopsied victims due to traffic accidents, which were autopsied, and in some cases handled in Prof.dr.R.D.Kandou Manado General Hospital from 2004 until 2008.  The results showed that 77.7% of deaths were due to traffic accident head injuries, and 22.2% to chest injuries. We observed that they had obvious internal organ damage, especially in the abdomen, which observation could not have been predicted just from external examination.  Therefore, it can be concluded that not only deaths by traffic accidents, but all fatalities should undergo autopsy to verify the exact cause of death. The human population significantly increases in crowded urban areas. It causes a reduction of available farming land. Therefore, a landless planting method is needed to supply the food for society. Hydroponics is one of the solutions for gardening methods without using soil. It uses nutrient-enriched mineral water as a nutrition solution for plant growth. Traditionally, hydroponic farming is conducted manually by monitoring the nutrition such as acidity or basicity (pH), the value of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electrical Conductivity (EC), and nutrient temperature. In this research, the researchers propose a system that measures pH, TDS, and nutrient temperature values in the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) technique using a couple of sensors. The researchers use lettuce as an object of experiment and apply the k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) algorithm to predict the classification of nutrient conditions. The result of prediction is used to provide a command to the microcontroller to turn on or off the nutrition controller actuators simultaneously at a time. The experiment result shows that the proposed k-NN algorithm achieves 93.3% accuracy when it is k = 5.

Mass migration to urban areas constitutes the basic direct factor of the decline in rural population of Yugoslavia in the second half of the 20th century. Due to the characteristic migration patterns by age and sex, they have had a substantial impact on the change in age structure of rural population towards rapid demographic ageing. By inducing decline in fertility and an increase in mortality, the newly formed age structure is increasingly becoming one of the basic factors to further decline in population, or even the major factor to rural depopulation in the majority of regions. The paper analyzes changes in age structure of rural population in the FR of Yugoslavia and across its republics and provinces during the period from 1961 to 1991. The conditions prevailing during the last census (1991) are particularly highlighted. The author points to distinct differences in ageing of urban versus rural populations, and considerable regional differences at the achieved level of demographic age. Based on the main demographic age indicators (the share of five-year and larger age groups, average age, ageing index and movement in major age-specific contingents), the author concludes that the process of population ageing had taken place in both rural and urban populations, but was more intensive in villages (higher share of the aged, higher index of ageing and higher average age) during the period under review. The author points to distinct ageing of rural population in all republics and provinces. It was most prominent in central Serbia and Vojvodina, while being quite slow in Kosovo and Metohia and recorded mainly in between the last two censuses (1981-1991). Likewise, Kosovo and Metohia constitute the only major region of Yugoslavia in which rural population in 1991 is still demographically younger than the population in urban settlements. Rural versus urban population ageing was much more intensive in other major regions of the country, both from the base and from the apex of the age pyramid. In view of the minimal differences in fertility and mortality levels by type of settlement (particularly in central Serbia and Vojvodina), the author argues that the inherited age structure constitutes the main cause of rapid acceleration in rural population ageing in low fertility regions.

Abstract Background Limited population-based studies have investigated the secular trend of prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in mainland China. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of GDM and time trends in Chinese female population. Methods Based on Diabetes Surveillance System of Zhejiang Province, 97,063 diagnosed GDM cases aged 20–50 years were identified from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018. Annual prevalence, prevalence rate ratios (PRRs) and average annual percentage change with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported. Results The age-standardized overall prevalence of GDM was reported to be 7.30% (95% CI 7.27–7.33%); 9.13% (95% CI 9.07–9.19%) in urban areas and 6.24% (95% CI 6.21–6.27%) in rural areas. Compared with 20–24 years age group, women in advanced age groups (25–50 years) were at higher risk for GDM (PRRs ranged from 1.37 to 8.95 and the 95% CIs did not include the null). Compared with rural areas, the risk for GDM was higher in urban areas (PRR: 1.69, 95% CI 1.67–1.72). The standardized annual prevalence increased from 6.02% in 2016 to 7.94% in 2018, with an average annual increase of 5.48%, and grew more rapidly in rural than urban areas (11.28% vs. 0.00%). Conclusions This study suggested a significant increase in the prevalence of GDM among Chinese female population in Zhejiang province during 2016–2018, especially in women characterized by advanced age and rural areas.

Adolescence is a time in life when lifestyle behaviours are acquired. One indicator of poor diet quality is the intake of foods and beverages with a relatively low nutritional value. Using the Australian classification of such foods, termed “discretionary”, we classified the intakes of Swedish adolescents who participated in the Riksmaten Adolescent 2016–17 national dietary survey. From selected schools, 3099 adolescents in age groups 11–12, 14–15 and 17–18 years provided two 24-h recalls. Intakes and healthy dietary scores were calculated. Plasma ferritin, folate and 25(OH)D were available for a third. Almost 40% of total energy came from discretionary foods/beverages. Adolescents with higher intakes were more likely to be female, older, from a low socioeconomic position-household and born in Sweden. Most discretionary foods/beverages were consumed on weekend days and during in-between meals, outside of the home and at school. Percent energy from discretionary intake was associated with healthy dietary scores but not nutritional status. A substantial amount of energy was obtained from discretionary foods/beverages, and we found that consumption is pervasive across sociodemographic factors, time and place. Addressing this pattern will require a comprehensive approach to food environments and behaviours to reach all adolescents in an equitable manner.
