Pervasive computing applications deal with the intelligence surrounding users that can facilitate their activities. This intelligence is provided in the form of software components incorporated in embedded systems or devices in close distance with end users. One example of infrastructure that can host intelligent pervasive services is the Edge Computing (EC) ecosystem. EC nodes can execute a number of tasks for data collected by devices present in the Internet of Things (IoT). In this paper, we propose an intelligent, proactive tasks management model based on demand. Demand depicts the number of users or applications interested in using the available tasks in EC nodes, thus characterizing their popularity. We rely on a Deep Machine Learning (DML) model and more specifically on a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) network to learn the distribution of demand indicators for each task and estimate the future interest in them. This information is combined with historical observations of and support for a decision making scheme to conclude which tasks that are offloaded due to limited interest in them. We have to recognise that, in our decision making, we also take into consideration the load that every task may add to the processing node where it will be allocated. The description of our model is accompanied by a large set of experimental simulations for evaluating the proposed mechanism. We provide numerical results and reveal that the proposed scheme is capable of deciding on the fly, while concluding the most efficient decisions.

The current satellite management system mainly relies on manual work. If small faults cannot be found in time, it may cause systematic fault problems and then affect the accuracy of satellite data and the service quality of meteorological satellite. If the operation trend of satellite will be predicted, the fault can be avoided. However, the satellite system is complex, and the telemetry signal is unstable, nonlinear, and time-related. It is difficult to predict through a certain model. Based on these, this paper proposes a bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) deep leaning model to predict the operation trend of meteorological satellite. In the method, the layer number of the model is designed to be two, and the prediction results, which are forecasted by LSTM network as the future trend data and historical data, are both taken as the input of BiLSTM model. The dataset for the research is generated and transmitted from Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager (AGRI), which is the load of FY4A meteorological satellite. In order to demonstrate the superiority of the BiLSTM prediction model, it is compared with LSTM based on the same dataset in the experiment. The result shows that the BiLSTM method reports a state-of-the-art performance on satellite telemetry data.

Aerobics is the fusion of gymnastics, dance, and music; it is a body of a sports project, along with the development of the society. The growing demand for aerobics inevitably increases the demand for aerobics coach and teacher and has opened elective aerobics class which is an effective way of cultivating professional talents relevant to aerobics. Aerobics has extended fixed teaching mode and cannot conform to the development of the times. The motion prediction of aerobics athletes is a new set of teaching aid. In this paper, a motion prediction model of aerobics athletes is built based on the wearable inertial sensor of the Internet of Things and the bidirectional long short term memory (BiLSTM) network. Firstly, a wireless sensor network based on ZigBee was designed and implemented to collect the posture data of aerobics athletes. The inertial sensors were used for data collection and transmission of the data to the cloud platform through Ethernet. Then, the movement of aerobics athletes is recognized and predicted by the BiLSTM network. Based on the BiLSTM network and the attention mechanism, this paper proposes to solve the problem of low classification accuracy caused by the traditional method of directly summing and averaging the updated output vectors corresponding to each moment of the BiLSTM layer. The simulation experiment is also carried out in this paper. The experimental results show that the proposed model can recognize aerobics effectively.

Despite the great significance of precisely forecasting the wind speed for development of the new and clean energy technology and stable grid operators, the stochasticity of wind speed makes the prediction a complex and challenging task. For improving the security and economic performance of power grids, accurate short-term wind power forecasting is crucial. In this paper, a deep learning model (Long Short-term Memory (LSTM)) has been proposed for wind speed prediction. Knowing that wind speed time series is nonlinear stochastic, the mutual information (MI) approach was used to find the best subset from the data by maximizing the joint MI between subset and target output. To enhance the accuracy and reduce input characteristics and data uncertainties, rough set and interval type-2 fuzzy set theory are combined in the proposed deep learning model. Wind speed data from an international airport station in the southern coast of Iran Bandar-Abbas City was used as the original input dataset for the optimized deep learning model. Based on the statistical results, the rough set LSTM (RST-LSTM) model showed better prediction accuracy than fuzzy and original LSTM, as well as traditional neural networks, with the lowest error for training and testing datasets in different time horizons. The suggested model can support the optimization of the control approach and the smooth procedure of power system. The results confirm the superior capabilities of deep learning techniques for wind speed forecasting, which could also inspire new applications in meteorology assessment.

This study was performed to test bioimpedance as a tool to detect the effect of different thawing methods on meat quality to aid in the eventual creation of an electric impedance-based food quality monitoring system. The electric impedance was measured for fresh pork, thawed pork, and during quick and slow thawing. A clear difference was observed between fresh and thawed samples for both impedance parameters. Impedance was different between the fresh and the frozen-thawed samples, but there were no impedance differences between frozen-thawed samples and the ones that were frozen-thawed and then stored at +3 °C for an additional 16 h after thawing. The phase angle was also different between fresh and the frozen-thawed samples. At high frequency, there were small, but clear phase angle differences between frozen-thawed samples and the samples that were frozen-thawed and subsequently stored for more than 16 h at +3 °C. Furthermore, the deep learning model LSTM-RNN (long short-term memory recurrent neural network) was found to be a promising way to classify the different methods of thawing.

In applications such as carrier attitude control and mobile device navigation, a micro-electro-mechanical-system (MEMS) gyroscope will inevitably be affected by random vibration, which significantly affects the performance of the MEMS gyroscope. In order to solve the degradation of MEMS gyroscope performance in random vibration environments, in this paper, a combined method of a long short-term memory (LSTM) network and Kalman filter (KF) is proposed for error compensation, where Kalman filter parameters are iteratively optimized using the Kalman smoother and expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we performed a linear random vibration test to acquire MEMS gyroscope data. Subsequently, an analysis of the effects of input data step size and network topology on gyroscope error compensation performance is presented. Furthermore, the autoregressive moving average-Kalman filter (ARMA-KF) model, which is commonly used in gyroscope error compensation, was also combined with the LSTM network as a comparison method. The results show that, for the x-axis data, the proposed combined method reduces the standard deviation (STD) by 51.58% and 31.92% compared to the bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM) network, and EM-KF method, respectively. For the z-axis data, the proposed combined method reduces the standard deviation by 29.19% and 12.75% compared to the BiLSTM network and EM-KF method, respectively. Furthermore, for x-axis data and z-axis data, the proposed combined method reduces the standard deviation by 46.54% and 22.30% compared to the BiLSTM-ARMA-KF method, respectively, and the output is smoother, proving the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Relatively recent increased computational power and extensive traffic data availability have provided a unique opportunity to re-investigate drivers’ car-following (CF) behavior. Classic CF models assume drivers’ behavior is only influenced by their preceding vehicle. Recent studies have indicated that considering surrounding vehicles’ information (e.g., multiple preceding vehicles) could affect CF models’ performance. An in-depth investigation of surrounding vehicles’ contribution to CF modeling performance has not been reported in the literature. This study uses a deep-learning model with long short-term memory (LSTM) to investigate to what extent considering surrounding vehicles could improve CF models’ performance. This investigation helps to select the right inputs for traffic flow modeling. Five CF models are compared in this study (i.e., classic, multi-anticipative, adjacent-lanes, following-vehicle, and all-surrounding-vehicles CF models). Performance of the CF models is compared in relation to accuracy, stability, and smoothness of traffic flow. The CF models are trained, validated, and tested by a large publicly available dataset. The average mean square errors (MSEs) for the classic, multi-anticipative, adjacent-lanes, following-vehicle, and all-surrounding-vehicles CF models are 1.58 × 10−3, 1.54 × 10−3, 1.56 × 10−3, 1.61 × 10−3, and 1.73 × 10−3, respectively. However, the results show insignificant performance differences between the classic CF model and multi-anticipative model or adjacent-lanes model in relation to accuracy, stability, or smoothness. The following-vehicle CF model shows similar performance to the multi-anticipative model. The all-surrounding-vehicles CF model has underperformed all the other models.

Accurate and reliable fault diagnosis is one of the key and difficult issues in mechanical condition monitoring. In recent years, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has been widely used in mechanical condition monitoring, which is also a great breakthrough in the field of bearing fault diagnosis. However, CNN can only extract local features of signals. The model accuracy and generalization of the original vibration signals are very low in the process of vibration signal processing only by CNN. Based on the above problems, this paper improves the traditional convolution layer of CNN, and builds the learning module (local feature learning block, LFLB) of the local characteristics. At the same time, the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) is introduced into the network, which is used to extract the global features. This paper proposes the new neural network—improved CNN-LSTM network. The extracted deep feature is used for fault classification. The improved CNN-LSTM network is applied to the processing of the vibration signal of the faulty bearing collected by the bearing failure laboratory of Inner Mongolia University of science and technology. The results show that the accuracy of the improved CNN-LSTM network on the same batch test set is 98.75%, which is about 24% higher than that of the traditional CNN. The proposed network is applied to the bearing data collection of Western Reserve University under the condition that the network parameters remain unchanged. The experiment shows that the improved CNN-LSTM network has better generalization than the traditional CNN.

The need for accurate tourism demand forecasting is widely recognized. The unreliability of traditional methods makes tourism demand forecasting still challenging. Using deep learning approaches, this study aims to adapt Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Unit networks (GRU), which are straightforward and efficient, to improve Taiwan’s tourism demand forecasting. The networks are able to seize the dependence of visitor arrival time series data. The Adam optimization algorithm with adaptive learning rate is used to optimize the basic setup of the models. The results show that the proposed models outperform previous studies undertaken during the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) events of 2002–2003. This article also examines the effects of the current COVID-19 outbreak to tourist arrivals to Taiwan. The results show that the use of the LSTM network and its variants can perform satisfactorily for tourism demand forecasting.


Neural Networks (ANN) has evolved through many stages in the last three decades with many researchers contributing in this challenging field. With the power of math complex problems can also be solved by ANNs. ANNs like Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Deep Neural network, Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) network, Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), Ordinary Differential Network etc., are playing promising roles in many MNCs and IT industries for their predictions and accuracy. In this paper, Convolutional Neural Network is used for prediction of Beep sounds in high noise levels. Based on Supervised Learning, the research is developed the best CNN architecture for Beep sound recognition in noisy situations. The proposed method gives better results with an accuracy of 96%. The prototype is tested with few architectures for the training and test data out of which a two layer CNN classifier predictions were the best.
