Despite advances in material sciences and clinical procedures for surgical hygiene, medical device implantation still exposes patients to the risk of developing local or systemic infections. The development of efficacious antimicrobial/antifouling materials may help with addressing such an issue. In this framework, polyethylene glycol (PEG)-grafted segmented polyurethanes were synthesized, physico-chemically characterized, and evaluated with respect to their bacterial fouling-resistance properties. PEG grafting significantly altered the polymer bulk and surface properties. Specifically, the PEG-grafted polyurethanes possessed a more pronounced hard/soft phase segregated microstructure, which contributed to improving the mechanical resistance of the polymers. The better flexibility of the soft phase in the PEG-functionalized polyurethanes compared to the pristine polyurethane (PU) was presumably also responsible for the higher ability of the polymer to uptake water. Additionally, dynamic contact angle measurements evidenced phenomena of surface reorganization of the PEG-functionalized polyurethanes, presumably involving the exposition of the polar PEG chains towards water. As a consequence, Staphylococcus epidermidis initial adhesion onto the surface of the PEG-functionalized PU was essentially inhibited. That was not true for the pristine PU. Biofilm formation was also strongly reduced.

To better understand the sedimentation processes of bentonite, the sedimentation characteristic of bentonite suspension was studied by using the sedimentation analysis module of Dynamic Contact Angle Meter and Tensiometer. The results indicated that sedimentation characteristics of bentonite suspension were affected by the concentration and pH values of the suspension together with the dosage of dispersants. The natural sedimentation rates of bentonite suspension declined firstly with prolonging the sedimentation time and soon stabilized after about 50s. The sedimentation weight of particles hardly changed when the concentration ranged from 0.5% to 5.0%, while it increased significantly when ranged from 5.0% to 10.0%. The sedimentation weight and rate were relatively bigger at 4.4, 11.8 than that of 6.0, 7.9, and the maximum values appeared at pH11.8. Adding sodium pyrophosphate could improve the dispersibility of bentonite suspension.

At two-phase flow in microchannels, slug flow regime is different for wettability of surface. A slug in a hydrophilic microchannel has liquid film. However, a slug in a hydrophobic microchannel has no liquid film instead, the slug has triple-lines and makes higher pressure drop due to the motion of the triple-line. In previous researches, pressure drop of triple-line is depended of dynamic contact angle, channel diameter and fluid property. And, dynamic contact angle is depended of static contact angle, superficial velocity and fluid property. In order to understand the pressure drop of motion of triple-lines, pressure drop of slug with triple-lines in case of various diameters (0.546, 0.763, 1.018, 1.555, 2.075 mm), various fluids (D.I.water, D.I.water-1, 5, 10% ethanol mixture) and various superficial velocity (j = 0.01∼0.4 m/s) was measured. Dynamic contact angle was calculated from relation of the pressure drop of slug with triple-lines. Comparing with previous dynamic contact angle correlations, previous correlation underestimated dynamic contact angle in the region of this study. (10−4≤Ca≤10−3, 10−2≤We≤10−1, 68°≤θS≤110°)
