Geospatial metadata are often encoded in formats that either are not aimed at efficient retrieval of resources or are plainly outdated. Particularly, the quantum leap represented by the Semantic Web did not induce so far a consistent, interlinked baseline in the geospatial domain. Datasets, scientific literature related to them, and ultimately the researchers behind these products are only loosely connected; the corresponding metadata intelligible only to humans, duplicated in different systems, seldom consistently. We address these issues by relating metadata items to resources that represent keywords, institutes, researchers, toponyms, and virtually any RDF data structure made available over the Web via SPARQL endpoints. Essentially, our methodology fosters delegated metadata management as the entities referred to in metadata are independent, decentralized data structures with their own life cycle. Our example implementation of delegated metadata envisages: (i) editing via customizable web-based forms (including injection of semantic information); (ii) encoding of records in any XML metadata schema; and (iii) translation into RDF. Among the semantics-aware features that this practice enables, we present a worked-out example focusing on automatic update of metadata descriptions. Our approach, demonstrated in the context of INSPIRE metadata (the ISO 19115/19119 profile eliciting integration of European geospatial resources) is also applicable to a broad range of metadata standards, including non-geospatial ones.

The publication of semantic web data, commonly represented in Resource Description Framework (RDF), has experienced outstanding growth over the last few years. Data from all fields of knowledge are shared publicly and interconnected in active initiatives such as Linked Open Data. However, despite the increasing availability of applications managing large-scale RDF information such as RDF stores and reasoning tools, little attention has been given to the structural features emerging in real-world RDF data. Our work addresses this issue by proposing specific metrics to characterise RDF data. We specifically focus on revealing the redundancy of each data set, as well as common structural patterns. We evaluate the proposed metrics on several data sets, which cover a wide range of designs and models. Our findings provide a basis for more efficient RDF data structures, indexes and compressors.

In this chapter, it is shown how useful user services can be created through the integration of social networks and semantic databases. The authors developed a recommendation service in a form of a Web-based application, where a user's interests are imported from social network Facebook and linked with additional data from open semantic database Freebase. Based on a custom implementation of k-nearest neighbors algorithm, the developed method is able to find recommendations based on users’ interests enriched with semantic information. The resulting list of found recommendations is then shown to the user in some basic categories like movies, music, games, books, and others.

ABSTRACT Objective: Identify and analyze the scientific literature on digital technologies for promotion of healthy eating habits in teenagers. Method: Integrative review of articles published in English and Spanish, available in full on four databases. The descriptors used were (Adolescent health) OR (Teen health) AND (Healthy diet) OR (Healthy eating) AND (Educational technology) OR (Instructional technology), respectively, from which eight articles were selected. Results: Among the studies included, three were digital games; two web-based nutrition interventions; two using online programs to prevent obesity; and one nutritional advice using multimedia. They showed experiences of digital technology and its effects on knowledge improvement and/or behavior of participants when developing healthy eating habits. Conclusion: Digital technologies are innovative tools present in the lives of teenagers, with the possibility of being used for education and promotion of healthy eating, contributing to the empowerment of the subject for his/her self-care.

In the data-intensive scientific research environment, the linkage of scientific data and scientific literature forms a complete body of scientific content. The literature and data serve scientific research together, which have become a hot issue of scientific research organizations. Starting from the metadata description elements of scientific data and scientific literature, this paper summarizes and analyses the association models of author association, keyword association and subject category association based on metadata description. On this basis, this paper describes the metadata management system architecture and system functions of linkage service of scientific data and scientific literature, providing some references for the relevant researchers.

Abstract Web-based interventions (WBI) are purposefully developed online programs designed for wide range of users (clients, patients, health care specialists, as well as medical practitioners) which allow obtaining and using information on various issues related to health maintenance and improvement. On the basis of the analysis of scientific literature, the article provides an overview of WBI types and components, as well as a structural model of WBI and its user in the context of environment factors. The possibilities of using WBI for developing long-term health literacy of individuals are specified. By summarising the main advantages and limitations of using WBI, the possible suggestions for the WBI use and development are offered.

Bibliometric analysis is a statistical method to summarize the amount of scientific activity in a domain. Insights can be derived from bibliometrics to understand the development trend of the research domain. R is an open sourced programming language specialized for statistical computing and graphic visualization. To benefit from the convenience of R and the outcome of bibliometric analysis, we here introduce BibeR, a web-based application for the visualization of bibliometric analysis. An example of bibliometric analysis on the articles published in journal Scientometrics is used to illustrate the usage of BibeR. The development of BibeR is still in progress, and future possibly improvements on BibeR are discussed.
