This study deals with the assessment and mapping of neotectonic landscape deformation in the northern part of the Evia Island (Central Greece). Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) utilizing Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Weighted Linear Combination (WLC) procedures were conducted for the calculation of the Neotectonic Landscape Deformation Index (NLDI). The study is based on the combination of morphotectonic, geomorphological and geological parameters. The GIS-based spatial MCDA led to the classification of the study area into five classes of neotectonic deformation (from very low to very high) and to a neotectonic deformation map. The results were compared with the outputs of a relative tectonic activity classification approach based on quantitative geomorphic analysis at a regional scale, including site-specific field observations. Areas of high and very high deformation are related to the major active faults of Dirfis, Kandili and Gregolimano–Telethrio. Other minor active normal faults of medium to high seismic risk level, affecting the northern and northeastern parts of the island, are also associated with areas of intense landscape neotectonic deformation.

Environmental burdens are currently a significant determinant ofenvironmental quality. The occurrence of montane environmental burdens affects the environmental quality at the local, regional and supraregional levels, mostly to a negative extent. Environmental pollution, due to montane environmental burdens is accompanied by a reduction in environmental quality in all spheres of anthropogenic existence. It is for this reason that the presented article studies the occurrence of montane environmental burdens and their impact on environmental quality in individual regions of the Slovak Republic. In the analyses Analytic Hierarchy Process a multi-criteria decision-making method based on values of the weights in terms of the principles of the Saaty matrix – a quantification of synergistic interactions of indicators. The study concentrates on selected comparative years 2008, 2012, 2017 and 2021 and includes a matrix of their elimination. The results present a categorization of montane environmental loads in the Slovak Republic into categories of the environmental load (from very low to very high) on the environmental quality. In the summary matrix of a comprehensive assessment of montane environmental loads, negative indicators (55.65%) prevails over positive ones (44.35%) with a total scoring ratio of 0.80, i.e. III. category, the average impact on environmental quality.

AbstractThis paper presents observations of recent faulting activity in the karstic network of the Rochefort Cave (Namur Province, Belgium, Europe). The principal recent tectonic features are bedding planes reactivated as normal faults, neo-formatted normal faults in calcite flowstone, fresh scaling, extensional features, fallen blocks and displacement of karstic tube. The seismo-tectonic aspect is expanded by the presence of fallen blocks where normally the cavity must be very stable and in equilibrium. Three main N 070° fault planes and a minor one affect, at a decimetre scale, the karst features and morphology. The faults are still active because recent fresh scaling and fallen blocks are observable. The breaking of Holocene soda straw stalactites and displacements of artificial features observed since the beginning of the tourist activity, in the last century, also suggest very recent reactivation of these faults. This recent faulting can be correlated to present-day tectonic activity, already evidenced by earthquakes in the neighbouring area. Therefore, karstic caves are favourable sites for the observation and the quantification of recent tectonic activity because they constitute a 3-D framework, protected from erosion. Fault planes with this recent faulting present slickensides. Thus a quantitative analysis in term of stress inversion, with the help of striated faults, has permitted to reconstruct the stress tensor responsible for the brittle deformation. The principal NW-SE extension (σ3 horizontal) is nearly perpendicular to that of the present regional stress as illustrated by the analysis of the last strong regional earthquake (Roermond, The Netherlands) in 1992. During the Meso-Cenozoic, the main stress tectonics recorded in this part of the European platform is similar to the present one with a NE-SW direction of extension.The discrepancy between the regional stress field and the local stress in the Rochefort cave can be the result of the inversion of the σ2 and σ3 axes of the stress ellipsoid due to its symmetry or of a local modification at the ground surface of the crustal stress field as it has been already observed in active zones.

This paper, based on the strong sustainable principles, is derived from Jinan Citys statistics yearbook and statistical bulletin materials. The author constructed the environmental indicator system and socioeconomic indicator system respectively with the help of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and calculated Jinan Citys sustainability indices for 2003-2010. The results show that the environmental sustainable development level in Jinan city was average in 2003-2005 and 2007; however, in 2006, 2008-2010 it achieved a high level. The socioeconomic sustainable development level in Jinan City was high in 2003-2007, and was very high in 2008-2010. The results of the analyses suggest that Jinan City should improve its air quality and strengthen its environmental investment. It is also urgent that Jinan improve citizens livelihood, especially for housing and pension insurance projects.

Abstract Environmental hazards (natural and man-made) have always constituted problem in many developing and developed countries. Many applications proved that these problems could be solved through planning studies and detailed information about these prone areas. Determining time and location and size of the problem are important for decision makers for planning and management activities. It is important to know the risk represented by those hazards and take actions to protect against them. Multicriteria analysis methods - Analytic hierarchy process, Pairwise comparison, Ranking method are used to analyse which is the most dangerous hazard facing Libya country. The multicriteria analysis ends with a more or less stable ranking of the given alternatives and hence a recommendation as to which alternative(s) problems should be preferred. Regarding our problem of environmental risk assessment, the result will be a ranking or categorisation of hazards with regard to their risk level.

The purpose of this research was to analyze the effort to improved competitiveness of potato commodities. This research employed a descriptive method and used data collection techniques of survey and interview. The data analyses being used were descriptive analysis and SWOT, and analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The result showed that there were five chain structures of potato commodity supply. Internal and external factor each has eight criteria which were made to alternative strategies. AHP suggests that strategies of internal factor are the development of facilities and infrastructure for potato commodity, increasing potato seeds availability, broadening market information, optimizing the utilization of potential cultivation area in Sembalun, improving and exploiting farmers’ potato cultivation experience, improving potato quality, utilizing available workers in potato post-harvest handling process, and reducing overproduction. Furthermore, the strategies of external factor are sharpening potato farmer’s skill, following the competition level, improving production opportunities in dry season, reducing risk level of extreme climate, practicing and making use of available government policy, improving the production to meet consumer demand, reducing pests and diseases and minimizing the fluctuations in potato price.

In this study, the flood hazard of Corum province (Turkey) was investigated using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which is one of the most popular Multi-criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methods, based on Geographic Information System (GIS). As a result of the AHP process, Corum province was categorized into five flood hazard classes: very high, high, medium, low, and very low. It was determined that 3% of the total area is under a very high flood hazard, and 25% is considered a high flood hazard. To assess the validity of the flood hazard map, the results were compared with the historical flood inventory. Our hazard map was compatible with the historical flood inventory, and our hazard map can now be used to estimate the areas that are threatened by possible floods. When the existing structural measures are overlapped with the hazard map in Corum, it is understood that a large part of the structural measures carried out to date have focused on the areas of very high and high flood hazard in the flood hazard map. Future structural measures and detailed studies should now address other areas identified as under threat in the flood hazard map. Our results suggest that the hazard assessment based on MCDA is suitable for flood hazard mapping.

Metro systems have become high-risk entities due to the increased frequency and severity of urban flooding. Therefore, understanding the flood risk of metro systems is a prerequisite for mega-cities’ flood protection and risk management. This study proposes a method for accurately assessing the flood risk of metro systems based on an improved trapezoidal fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP). We applied this method to assess the flood risk of 14 lines and 268 stations of the Guangzhou Metro. The risk results validation showed that the accuracy of the improved trapezoidal fuzzy AHP (90% match) outperformed the traditional trapezoidal AHP (70% match). The distribution of different flood risk levels in Guangzhou metro lines exhibited a polarization signature. About 69% (155 km2) of very high and high risk zones were concentrated in central urban areas (Yuexiu, Liwan, Tianhe, and Haizhu); the three metro lines with the highest overall risk level were lines 3, 6, and 5; and the metro stations at very high risk were mainly located on metro lines 6, 3, 5, 1, and 2. Based on fieldwork, we suggest raising exits, installing watertight doors, and using early warning strategies to resist metro floods. This study can provide scientific data for decision-makers to reasonably allocate flood prevention resources, which is significant in reducing flood losses and promoting Guangzhou’s sustainable development.

Typically, water has been allocated by some priority criteria like water rights in each country . However, water allocation by priority might have the problem in which the area of lowest priority can suffer from water shortage all the time. So, this study has tried to develop water allocation rules by weighting factor techniques. The weighting factors are estimated by sectoral and regional factors. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied to estimate the sectoral factors and the regional factors can be divided by the regional-characteristic and regional-scale ends. The water allocation rules for the reservoir are developed by applying those weighting factors and the rules are applied to Andong dam reservoir which supplies the water to Busan-Si, Daegu-Si, and Goryeong-Gun, Korea in water deficit situation. As a result, all sectors and regions could share the burdens of water shortage by the water allocation using the relative weighting factors.

Abstract. The analysis of mining-induced sinkholes occurrence is a very important issue as far as the spatial development optimization is concerned. Research conducted for this paper was focussed on examining the applicability of GIS and the associated AHP method (analytic hierarchy process) for estimating the risk of discontinuous deformation occurrence on the surface. Qualitative factors were accounted for in the sinkhole risk assessment, thus creating bases for the research. These elements play an important role in the process of sinkholes formation; however, they were not used in prediction models. Another assumption lay in minimizing the number of variables in the model. Accordingly, the most important qualitative and quantitative risk factors were finally selected on the basis of whether the risk of cave-ins occurrence on the surface could be calculated. The results of the estimation of potential sinkhole zones were verified. The locations of actual and high-risk potential discontinuous deformation were compared. The congruence between predicted values and the actual observations of sinkholes was very high. The results of research presented prove the necessity to evaluate sinkhole hazards in view of qualitative factors.

<p>Landslides problems are one of the major natural hazards in the mountainous region. Every year due to the increase in anthropogenic factors and changing climate, the problem of landslides is increasing, which leads to huge loss of property and life. Landslide is a common and regular phenomenon in most of the northeastern states of India.  However, in recent past years, Manipur has experienced several landslides including mudslides during the rainy season. Manipur is a geologically young and geodynamically active area with many streams flowing parallel to fault lines. As a first step toward hazard management, a landslide susceptibility map is the prime necessity of the region. In this study, we have prepared a landslide hazard map of the state using freely available earth observations datasets and multi-criteria decision making technique, i.e., Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). For this purpose, lithology, rainfall, slope, aspect, relative relief, Topographic Wetness Index, and distance from road, river and fault were used as the parameters in AHP based on the understanding of their influence towards landslide in that region. The hazard map is classified into four hazard zones: Very High, High, Moderate, and Low. About 40% of the state falls under very high and high hazard zone, and the hilly regions such as Senapati and Chandel district are more susceptible to the landslide. Among the factors, slope and rainfall have a more significant contribution towards landslide hazard. It is also observed that areas nearer to NH-39 that lies in the fault zones i.e., Mao is also susceptible to high hazard. The landslide susceptibility map gives an first-hand impression for future land use planning and hazard mitigation purpose.</p>
