Even though the World Tourism Organization described Sustainable Tourism as a tourism form that could contribute to the future survival of the industry, the current reality is quite different, since it has not been firmly established in society at expected levels. The present study analyzes which variables drive the consumption of this tourism type, taking tourist awareness as the key element. To this awareness, we must add the current crisis experienced by the tourism industry caused by COVID-19, since it can benefit Sustainable Tourism development, promoting less crowded destinations that favor social distancing. For this, the existing literature on Sustainable Tourism has been examined in order to create a model that highlights the relations among these variables. To determine the meaning of these relations, a sample of 308 tourists was analyzed through structural equation models using Partial Least Squares. The results show that there is a clear attitude on the part of the tourist to develop Sustainable Tourism, driven by the positive effects and motivation it entails, as well as the satisfaction the tourist perceives when consuming a responsible tourism type.

Penelitian ini adalah sebuah usaha yang dilakukan untuk mengurai masalah yang dihadapi para stakeholder dalam mewujudkan sebuah pengelolaan pariwisata yang berkelanjutan di kawasan Danau Toba. Indikator yang diukur dalam penelitian ini adalah indikator dasar dari 5 (lima) isu utama pengembangan periwisata berkelanjutan yang telah dikembangkan oleh United Nation World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan diperkuat dengan data-data yang bersifat kuantitatif. Berdasarkan hasil pengukuran indikator-indikator dasar tersebut dan pendalaman yang dilakukan dengan diskusi-diskusi yang dilakukan dengan para informan penelitian, diketahui bahwa sebenarnya penyelesaian persoalan dasar pengembangan pariwisata berkelanjutan di sebuah destinasi wisata masih menjadi tugas besar bagi para stakeholder kepariwisataan di kawasan tersebut. Berdasarkan jenis permasalahan yang ada, maka terdapat kebutuhan kebijakan pengembangan terkait: 1) peningkatkan perekonomian dengan adanya kegiatan pariwisata; 2) penjaminan kesejahteraan daerah dan masyarakat lokal dengan adanya kegiatan pariwisata; 3) pemenuhan kepuasan pengunjung; 4) pelibatan masyarakat lokal di dalam pengelolaan kepariwisataan; dan 5) penjaminan kelestarian lingkungan hidup.   Kata kunci: pengembangan, pariwisata berkelanjutan, Danau Toba

The tourism industry has been gravely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, the purpose of this study was to explore residents’ support for sustainable tourism development in an integrative model that considered well-established factors and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing various research gaps caused by the pandemic, this study aimed to examine a model based on eight hypotheses. Using the premises of a cross-sectional study, data was gathered from residents from Sibiu. Data analysis implied various steps to provide an accurate understanding of the hypotheses and the model was developed based on structural equation modeling. Considering the results of hypothesis testing, our study reconfirmed the applicability of social exchange theory in describing residents’ attitudes toward tourism development and positioned quality of life as an important predictor for this construct. Also, the outcomes highlighted a negative relationship between the host community’s perceptions of the coronavirus pandemic and their subsequent support for sustainable tourism development. Overall, the results focused on offering contributions for a better understanding of residents’ behavior and the influence of the COVID-19 outbreak on their support for sustainable tourism development. The conceptual and practical ramifications of the study were addressed in the article’s conclusion.

Introduction. Tourism is an important area of socio-economic activity and makes a significant contribution to the state budget revenues of many countries. The growing importance of tourism and the exacerbation of problems associated with its development, make us talk about the need for change and the search for new vectors of development. This has led to numerous attempts to adapt the main provisions and principles of the concept of sustainable development in the context of the functioning of tourism. It should be noted that the first attempt to define sustainable tourism was made in 1988 by the World Tourism Organization. Sustainable tourism was seen as a direction that leads to the management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be met while preserving cultural identity, basic environmental processes, biodiversity and life support systems. Goal. The purpose of the study is to introduce aspects of sustainable development of tourism as a purposeful influence on the processes of formation and maintenance of the tourist and recreational environment in the interests of society. Method (methodology). The methodological basis of the study were interdisciplinary and systematic approaches to the study of the functioning of the tourism industry. Results. This article reveals the features of the tourism industry from the standpoint of sustainable development.

This research aims primarily at finding and assessing indicators of sustainable tourism (ST) that can be applied to assess Parangtritis and Parangkusumo beaches in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, as well as studying predominant indicators in supporting the sustainability of tourism activities in the area. Those indicators assessed and revealed in this research are partly based on set of ST indicators as outlined by the World Tourism Organization guidebook (2004). They have been chosen in respect to the concept of sustainable development, which covers three main areas: ecosystem or environment sustainability, social development and economic development, with the emphasis on socio-cultural indicators. In this research, indicators of sustainable tourism development that have been classified based on the concept of sustainable development are then assessed and studied to reveal possible and appropriate application in the area. In addition, some other indicators are also profoundly important in contributing to tourism sustainability in the area.

In the recent years, the rapid growth of the tourism industry has risen to prominence as a global concern. Tourism empowers communities and uplifts the economy. However, it poses social and environmental challenges, which in turn draws attention to tourism patterns. Sustainable tourism promises protection of the environment and the social-cultural elements of any given destination. Hence, this study aims to understand the complex relationship between sustainability policy, management, and tourist behavior. Thus, we examined the relationships between sustainable tourism policy and destination management, destination social responsibility, and tourist value orientation with sustainable tourism development. We recruited participants at managerial level coming from 163 Malaysian companies and conducted a cross-sectional quantitative study, using partial least square structural equation modeling. We propose that sustainable tourism policy and destination management and destination social responsibility significantly impact sustainable tourism development. Moreover, destination social responsibility partially mediates the relationship between sustainable tourism policy destination management and sustainable tourism development.

El estudio se enfoca en la comunidad del cantón Jaramijó, donde no existen estudios turísticos, carece de una planificación turística lo que ha agudizado los niveles de desempleo, y el inadecuado manejo de los recursos naturales ha afectado a la biodiversidad. El objetivo es diseñar un plan de desarrollo turístico sostenible, mediante la aplicación de herramientas de planificación, para incentivar el amor propio, la superación de un pueblo, la liberación económica contribuyendo al mejoramiento de la calidad de vida de sus habitantes. Entre las metodologías aplicadas durante la fase del diagnóstico turístico, se destacan los lineamientos previstos por  la Organización Mundial de Turismo y el Ministerio de Turismo del Ecuador; recurriendo a todo método que sea necesario para lograr el análisis como, material de consulta bibliográfica, la observación del comportamiento de sus habitantes en el desenvolvimiento constante de su diario vivir, así como las directrices que las organizaciones mundiales promueven para el turismo moderno, garantizando resultados confiables que sirvan como punto de partida para la elaboración de propuestas turísticas, creativas e innovadoras que apliquen la sostenibilidad como punto de interés y lo más importante, beneficiar las generaciones futuras logrando la conservación de los recursos naturales que serán el atrayente del turista, a la vez este tipo de planes bien pudieran ser replicados en comunidades de similares características.  Palabras Claves: Turismo, sostenibilidad, diagnóstico, plan, desarrollo, proyectos   Elaboration a sustainable tourism development plan for the canton jaramijó province of manabí, 2015   Summary The study focuses on the community of Canton Jaramijó, where no tourism studies, lacks a tourism planning which has further exacerbated levels of unemployment, and inadequate management of natural resources has affected biodiversity. The goal is to design a plan for sustainable tourism development through the application of planning tools, to encourage self-esteem, overcoming a people, economic liberalization contributes to improving the quality of life of its inhabitants. Among the methodologies used during the tourist diagnosis, highlighting the guidelines provided by the World Tourism Organization and the Ministry of Tourism of Ecuador; resorting to all means necessary to achieve the analysis as bibliographic research material, observing the behavior of its inhabitants in the constant development of their daily lives, as well as the guidelines for global organizations promoting modern tourism, ensuring results reliable to serve as a starting point for the development of tourism, creative and innovative proposals implementing sustainability as landmark and most importantly, future generations benefit achieving the conservation of natural resources that will be the attractive tourist, the once such plans might well be replicated in similar communities. Tourism has emerged as an industry with enormous potential for national and global scale, taking a prominent role as an instrument of competitiveness and regional development booster. There are many studies on this subject, however are still deficient those who are focused on empirical validation of a tourist destination competitiveness models. This research intends to contribute to filling this gap, the purpose of which is based on the evaluation of the competitiveness of the regional area of the Algarve tourism, by identifying the tourism competitiveness factors in this region. The methodology used in the research required the application of primary data, where it was used a questionnaire to the companies with the satellite account of characteristics activities of the World Tourism Organization. Using structural equation models, the results show that there are several significant relationships between resources, supply and destination management as key factors for the competitiveness of the regional study area

In its sustainable tourism agenda for 2030, the UN World Tourism Organization has embraced three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. One of these, specifically SDG 8, highlights the need to pursue decent work and growth. Nevertheless, despite the growing recognition of this target and although there is a growing number of writings lamenting the precarity characterizing many tourism-related jobs, the topic of tourism-related work continues to receive sparse attention in the considerable volume of academic literature on tourism and sustainability. This paper attempts to redress this neglect. First, by providing a review of extant studies on tourism labor, we seek to explain why this research lacuna continues to exist. We then examine organizational and technological aspects of tourism governance, which hinder attempts to establish decent work and improve dignity in the tourism industry worldwide. By acknowledging the volatile and liminal status of tourism work and future labor market prospects, we arrive at the following question: what should sustainable tourism work look like? This leads us to suggest that the development of a human-centered research agenda, which focuses on workers’ agency and resources, offers a promising research avenue for expanding on the tourism and sustainability research agenda.

Endowed with stunning natural beauty, Sleman has become a destination increasingly flooded by tourists from year to year. The rapid development of tourism does have a positive impact, especially on the economic side, but on the other hand, it can have a negative impact if the management does not prioritize the principles of sustainable tourism. The type of tourism that can be affected is tourism that relies on nature as its main attraction, Cliff of Breksi is one of them. Cliff of Breksi has experienced rapid development in terms of the number of tourist visits, but it has never been examined whether its management is following the principle of sustainability. The objectives of this research are: a) to identify the management of the environmental aspects of Cliff of Breksi, whether it is following the indicators of sustainable tourism from The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and b) determine what things need to be improved so that management can be more optimal. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative method. Research data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations. The results of the study indicate that the manager has so far had awareness and understanding in applying the principles of sustainable tourism as in the indicators of UNWTO sustainable tourism. This article discusses the role of women in supporting sustainable tourism development in Bali by promoting Balinese cuisine to the tourism world. To date, studies on the role of Balinese women in the tourism industry have looked mainly at women as ordinary workers or professionals. In fact, Balinese women operate as culinary entrepreneurs who have not only been successful in introducing Balinese cuisine to the world of tourism but have opened up job opportunities for men and women alike. The data presented in this article was collected through observation of four leading Balinese women who run successful local culinary outlets or restaurants offering local dishes, and is complemented by interviews and other published sources relating to their business activities. The four pioneering women surveyed are Men Tempeh of Gilimanuk (West Bali) serving chicken betutu, the suckling pig restaurant manager Ibu Oka in Ubud, the owner of Made’s Warung Ni Made Masih, and the catering company owner Ibu Warti Buleleng, based in Denpasar. This article concludes that these four Balinese culinary heroines or srikandi have successfully managed to preserve and promote Balinese dishes to the world of tourism while contributing to the sustainable development of Balinese tourism by providing opportunities for tourists to experience local cuisine.
