With the development of the economy in China, the tourism industry has become a form of daily entertainment for citizens. Commercial pedestrianized blocks have been designed as recreational centers for tourists, serving as outdoor public space and scenic spots. The use of these regions is directly determined by the outdoor thermal environment. So far, few studies have been conducted on tourists’ thermal experience in commercial pedestrianized blocks, especially in the hot and humid region of southern China. Using field measurement and numerical simulation of a commercial pedestrianized block in Fo Shan, China, to research tourists’ thermal experience under different conditions, the final results of this study could help to select the most suitable time for tourist travel and help local managers to improve the thermal environment.

The outdoor wind environment is one of the most important factors influencing the biological environment and human comfort. The campus of China University of Mining & Technology (Beijing) (CUMTB) is the case study for this research. PHOENICS simulation software was used to carry out a numerical simulation study of the outdoor wind environment. The pedestrian-level wind (PLW) environments for both winter and summer were investigated. Based on the numerical simulation results, the overall evaluation and subregional analysis of the campus’ current outdoor wind environment were carried out. Then, according to the results and problems of wind environment assessment, improvement measures and strategies of outdoor wind environment in universities are proposed from the aspects of campus planning, single building form, and greening configuration. The main goal is to further improve the outdoor space and environment of universities in Beijing and provide general guidelines to improve the quality of the universities’ wind environment effectively. The strategies can provide a reference for the same type of campus on wind environment renovation and improvement. This study can also provide data support and reference significance for outdoor thermal environment/pedestrian environment research.

As the climate warming up, the effects of the urban heat island have been an insurmountable issue in the urban development. In this paper, taking Tianjin for example, the research combined computer simulation with on-site measurement to evaluate the effects of different greening ratios on outdoor thermal environment. Besides, the accuracy of the simulation model has been verified by calibration. Research results determined that the increase of the greening ratio in the existing environment could improve the outdoor thermal environment in summer. But the limitations of green cooling was also pointed out, namely that the air temperature would infinitely close to a certain value with further increasing greening ratio.

Outdoor thermal environment in urban spaces is important for people to enjoy the urban environment. This paper investigated the effect of urban design on outdoor thermal environment in an urban street in the central business district in Singapore, focusing on street orientation and height-to-width ratio. The microclimatic parameters of different street design scenarios were determined by ENVI-met numerical simulation. Field measurement was conducted to validate the results from the numerical simulation and they were in good agreement. For different design scenarios, it is found that (1) The air temperature differences did not exceed 0.8°C; (2) The mean radiant temperature differences could exceed 40°C; (3) The maximum wind speed difference was 0.6 m/s; (4) No distinct relative humidity differences could be found. The results show that shading is the key strategy for improving outdoor thermal environment in Singapore because it leads to reduction on the air temperature and mean radiant temperature simultaneously. N-S orientated street had the best thermal environment condition.Outdoor thermal environment in urban spaces is important for people to enjoy the urban environment.
