In the present study, the effect of an undulated bottom topography on the radiation of water waves by a floating rectangular buoy is analyzed. Various physical quantities of interest such as the added mass and damping coefficients associated with the surge, heave, and pitch motions are analyzed for a variety of parameters associated with the incident waves and bottom undulations. The study reveals that the added mass and damping coefficients associated with the surge and pitch motions of the floating buoy vary in an oscillatory manner with the variation in wavenumber for a sinusoidally varying bottom topography. Moreover, the oscillation amplitude is higher around the primary Bragg value. Further, this oscillatory pattern and oscillation amplitude increase with an increase in the ripple amplitude and the number of ripples for a sinusoidally varying bottom. However, a reverse pattern is formed with an increase in the depth ratio. In the long-wave regime, the added mass and damping coefficient corresponding to the surge motion become higher for a protrusion-type bed profile and lower for a depression-type bed profile. However, a reverse pattern is observed in the intermediate- and short-wave regimes.

Extended mild-slope models (MMSs) are examined for predicting the characteristics of normally incident waves propagating over sinusoidal bottom topography in the presence of opposing shearing currents. It is shown that MMSs are able to provide quite good predictions in the case of Bragg scattering of waves over rippled bathymetry without a current, but fail to provide good predictions concerning the resonant frequency in the additional presence of a current. In order to resolve the above mismatch, a two-equation mild-slope system (CMS2) is derived from a variational principle based on the representation of the wave potential expressed as a superposition of the forward and backward components. The latter system is compared against experimentally measured data collected in a wave flume and is shown to provide more accurate predictions concerning both the resonant frequency and the amplitude of the reflection coefficient. Future work will be devoted to the examination of the derived model for a more general wave system over realistic seabed topography.

The free long-wave generation by short-wave groups over a sloping bottom is studied both experimentally and theoretically by various authors showing important results concerning the modelling of energy transfer from the short waves to subharmonics. In the present work, the coupled-mode model developed by Athanassoulis & Belibassakis (1999) for the propagation of water waves over variable bathymetry regions, as generalized to include dissipation due to bottom friction and breaking effects, is applied to calculate the spatial evolution of short-wave groups propagating over a shoaling area, characterized by general bottom topography. Following Scha¨ffer (1993), the present model is appropriately modified in the surf zone in order to destroy the short-wave modulation, keeping the wave height decay in proportion to the local water-depth, and is then used to calculate radiation stresses associated with shoaling and breaking of short-wave groups in the area of general bathymetry and in the surf zone. Subsequently, the system of long wave equations, corresponding to zero (set-down/set-up) and first few harmonics, forced by the radiation stresses, is numerically solved. Results are presented showing that the present model provides reasonable predictions, supporting the study of infragravity waves induced by shortwave groups and their effects on harbors and mooring systems of large vessel operating in nearshore/coastal regions.

This paper presents the calculation of the hydrodynamic forces exerted on an oscillating circular cylinder when it moves perpendicular to its axis in infinitely deep water covered by compressed ice. The cylinder can oscillate both horizontally and vertically in the course of its translational motion. In the linear approximation, a solution is found for the steady wave motion generated by the cylinder within the hydrodynamic set of equations for the incompressible ideal fluid. It is shown that, depending on the rate of ice compression, both normal and anomalous dispersion can occur in the system. In the latter case, the group velocity can be opposite to the phase velocity in a certain range of wavenumbers. The dependences of the hydrodynamic loads exerted on the cylinder (the added mass, damping coefficients, wave resistance and lift force) on the translational velocity and frequency of oscillation were studied. It was shown that there is a possibility of the appearance of negative values for the damping coefficients at the relatively big cylinder velocity; then, the wave resistance decreases with the increase in cylinder velocity. The theoretical results were underpinned by the numerical calculations for the real parameters of ice and cylinder motion.

One of the possible mechanisms of forming offshore sandbars parallel to a coast is the wave-induced mass transport in the boundary layer near the sea bottom. For this mechanism to be effective, sufficient reflection must be present so that the waves are partially standing. The main part of this paper is to explain a theory that strong reflection can be induced by the sandbars themselves, once the so-called Bragg resonance condition is met. For constant mean depth and simple harmonic waves this resonance has been studied by Davies (1982), whose theory, is however, limited to weak reflection and fails at resonance. Comparison of the strong reflection theory with Heathershaw's (1982) experiments is made. Furthermore, if the incident waves are slightly detuned or slowly modulated in time, the scattering process is found to depend critically on whether the modulational frequency lies above or below a threshold frequency. The effects of mean beach slope are also studied. In addition, it is found for periodically modulated wave groups that nonlinear effects can radiate long waves over the bars far beyond the reach of the short waves themselves. Finally it is argued that the breakpoint bar of ordinary size formed by plunging breakers can provide enough reflection to initiate the first few bars, thereby setting the stage for resonant reflection for more bars.


The method of multiple scales is used to examine the slow modulation of a harmonic wave moving over the surface of a two dimensional channel. The flow is assumed inviscid and incompressible, but the basic flow takes the form of an arbitrary shear. The appropriate nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived with coefficients that depend, in a complicated way, on the shear. It is shown that this equation agrees with previous work for the case of no shear; it also agrees in the long wave limit with the appropriate short wave limit of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the shear being arbitrary. Finally, it is remarked that the stability of Stokes waves over any shear can be examined by using the results derived here.

Static and rotordynamic coefficients are measured for a rocker-pivot, tilting-pad journal bearing (TPJB) with 50 and 60% offset pads in a load-between-pad (LBP) configuration. The bearing uses leading-edge-groove direct lubrication and has the following characteristics: 5-pads, 101.6 mm (4.0 in) nominal diameter,0.0814 -0.0837 mm (0.0032–0.0033 in) radial bearing clearance, 0.25 to 0.27 preload, and 60.325 mm (2.375 in) axial pad length. Tests were performed on a floating bearing test rig with unit loads from 0 to 3101 kPa (450 psi) and speeds from 7 to 16 krpm. Dynamic tests were conducted over a range of frequencies (20 to 320 Hz) to obtain complex dynamic stiffness coefficients as functions of excitation frequency. For most test conditions, the real dynamic stiffness functions were well fitted with a quadratic function with respect to frequency. This curve fit allowed for the stiffness frequency dependency to be captured by including an added mass matrix [M] to a conventional [K][C] model, yielding a frequency independent [K][C][M] model. The imaginary dynamic stiffness coefficients increased linearly with frequency, producing frequency-independent direct damping coefficients. Direct stiffness coefficients were larger for the 60% offset bearing at light unit loads. At high loads, the 50% offset configuration had a larger stiffness in the loaded direction, while the unloaded direct stiffness was approximately the same for both pivot offsets. Cross-coupled stiffness coefficients were positive and significantly smaller than direct stiffness coefficients. Negative direct added-mass coefficients were obtained for both offsets, especially in the unloaded direction. Cross-coupled added-mass coefficients are generally positive and of the same sign. Direct damping coefficients were mostly independent of load and speed, showing no appreciable difference between pivot offsets. Cross-coupled damping coefficients had the same sign and were much smaller than direct coefficients. Measured static eccentricities suggested cross coupling stiffness exists for both pivot offsets, agreeing with dynamic measurements. Static stiffness measurements showed good agreement with the loaded, direct dynamic stiffness coefficients.

The problem of wave radiation and diffraction by submerged spheroids is analyzed using linearized three-dimensional potential-flow theory. The solution is obtained by expanding the velocity potential into a series of Legendre functions in a spheroidal coordinate system. Tabulated and graphical results are provided for added mass and damping coefficients of various spheroids undergoing motions in six degrees of freedom. Graphs are also provided for exciting forces and moments corresponding to a range of incoming wave angles.

The problem discussed concerns small motions of a ship, in all six degrees of freedom, but at zero speed of advance, due to an incident wave system in shallow water of depth comparable with the ship's draft. The problem is completely formulated for an arbitrary ship, and is partially solved for the case when the ship is slender and the wavelength much greater than the water depth. Sample numerical computations of heave, pitch, and sway added mass and damping coefficients and the sway exciting force are presented.
