Openings in reinforced concrete (RC) slabs are not commonly prescribed in design codes. Even when they are, they raise concerns regards to the size of the openings and the location of the applied loads. Lack of sufficient information about the load-carrying capacity of the slabs with openings and performance is another concern. Hence, this research addresses the structural behavior of slabs with openings coated with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheet. In the experimental part, ten slabs were cast with a dimension of 1000 mm × 530 mm × 25 mm, among which nine slabs had openings and one slab was without opening (control slab). The configuration of the CFRP sheet includes coating in the form of single, double, and triple layers. Experimental results show that the slab with a triple coating of the CFRP layer offers the maximum resistance towards the loading rate. Moreover, with the increase in CFRP layers, the value of deflection is minimized.

AbstractStrengthening the structural members of old buildings using advanced materials is a contemporary research in the field of repairs and rehabilitation. Many researchers used plain Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) sheets for strengthening Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams. In this research work, rectangular corrugated GFRP laminates were used for strengthening RC beams to achieve higher flexural strength and load carrying capacity. Type and dimensions of corrugated profile were selected based on preliminary study using ANSYS software. A total of twenty one beams were tested to study the load carrying capacity of control specimens and beams strengthened with plain sheets and corrugated laminates using epoxy resin. This paper presents the experimental and theoretical study on flexural strengthening of Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams using corrugated GFRP laminates and the results are compared. Mathematical models were developed based on the experimental data and then the models were validated.

Cracks in concrete structure have always been a big threat on the strength of the concrete. Crack is one of the common deterioration observed in reinforced concrete beams and slabs. Concrete cracking is a random process, highly variable and influenced by many factors. To restore the structural capacity of the concrete damages, retrofitting and strengthening are required. There are several techniques that are used for retrofitting and strengthening reported in the literature [1], [2], [3]. This paper investigates the strength performance of retrofitting and strengthening methods of reinforced concrete one-way slab. Flexural bending test are performed on three different concrete slab of size 1000 mm x 500 mm x 75 mm. The methods that are used for retrofit are epoxy injection and patching and for the strengthening is lamination of carbon fiber reinforced polymer. The slabs were loaded to a certain stage where the cracks were formed for retrofitting and strengthening procedure. The achieved failure mode and load capacity of the concrete slab were observed. The repaired techniques for restoring and improving the structural capacity of cracked concrete slabs were analyzed. The ultimate load achieved for the epoxy injection laminate was 19.60 kN followed by CFRP laminate and patching that were 17.64 kN and 17.03 kN respectively. While the deflection value for the three specimens were 14.42 mm, 4.49 mm and 7.036 mm.

Bridge specifications do not consider the effect of parapet stiffness in the analysis and design of reinforced concrete slab bridges. This paper performs a parametric investigation using finite element analysis (FEA) to study the effects of parapet stiffness on live load-carrying capacity of two-span, three-and four-lane concrete slab bridges. This study analyzed 96 highway bridge cases with varied parameters such as span-length, bridge width, and parapet stiffness within practical ranges. Reinforced concrete parapets or railings, built integrally with the bridge deck, were placed on one and/or both sides of bridge deck. The longitudinal bending moments calculated using the FEA results were compared with reference bridge cases without parapets, as well as AASHTO Standard and LRFD specifications. The FEA results presented in this paper showed that the presence of concrete parapets reduces the negative bending moments by 15% to 60% and the positive bending moments by 10% to 45%. The reduction in longitudinal bending moments can mean an increase in the load-carrying capacity of such bridges depending on the parapet stiffness. This investigation can assist engineers in modeling the actual bridge geometry more accurately for estimating the load-carrying capacity of existing concrete bridges. Hence, new bridges can be designed by considering the presence of concrete parapets. Parapets can be used as an alternative for strengthening existing one and two-span reinforced concrete slab bridges.

<p>Explosions emanating from terrorist attacks or military weapons cause damage to civilian and military facilities. Understanding the mechanical behaviour of reinforced concrete structures subjected to blast is of paramount importance for minimizing the possible blast damage. A full-scale experimental program consisting of six reinforced concrete slabs with compressive strengths of 60 MPa, 50 MPa and 40 MPa, measuring 1.0 m × 1.0 m × 0.08 m, and subjected to 2.7 kg of non-confined plastic bonded explosive, was conducted in blast test area of Science and Technology Aerospace Department (Brazilian Air Force). This paper compares experimentally measured peak displacement values with theoretical values. Theoretical analysis was carried out using single degree of freedom (SDOF) models. The comparison showed that SDOF analysis worked very well in predicting the reinforced concrete slab peak displacement against blast effects. Qualitative analysis after the experiments showed that the blast wave shape generated by the cylindrical explosive was not uniformly distributed on the slabs for the standoff distance of 0.927 m∕kg1/3.<br /><br /></p>

This study presents the structural behavior and punching shear strength of the concrete slab-column connections strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. The variables considered for the twelve specimens included the compressive strength of the concrete, the ratio of the tensile steel reinforcement, and the amount of the CFRP laminates. Square concrete slabs were simply supported along four edges. During the test, monotonically concentrated load was applied to the stub column located at the center of the slab. The punching shear strength, stiffness, and mode of failure were investigated. Test results demonstrated that increasing the compressive strength of concrete, ratio of the steel reinforcement, and amount of the CFRP laminates led to an increase in the punching shear strength of the slabs. Moreover, the CFRP laminates were effective in appreciably increasing the punching shear strength of the slab-column connections. An analytical approach was conducted to calculate the punching shear strength of the slab-column connections strengthened with CFRP laminates. Based on the theory of reinforced concrete members, the application of the CFRP laminates increased the flexural strength of the slab and resulted in an increase of the effective depth of the slab section. Consequently, the punching shear strength was increased. The results of the analytical calculation revealed that the analytical work accurately predicted the experimental punching shear strength.
