In recent years the information user needs have been changed due to the heterogeneity of web contents which increasingly involve in multimedia contents. Although modern search engines provide visual queries, it is not easy to find systems that allow searching from a particular domain of interest and that perform such search by combining text and visual queries. Different approaches have been proposed during years and in the semantic research field many authors proposed techniques based on ontologies. On the other hand, in the context of image retrieval systems techniques based on deep learning have obtained excellent results. In this paper we presented novel approaches for image semantic retrieval and a possible combination for multimedia document analysis. Several results have been presented to show the performance of our approach compared with literature baselines.

As the size of multimedia database grows, it becomes impractical to manually annotate all contents and attributes of the media, and the difficulty in finding desired information increases. To copy with these challenges, content-based multimedia retrieval systems have been developed for various applications. The chapter not only provides a conceptual architecture for the design of content-based retrieval system, but also discusses essential components of retrieval system and their research issues, including feature extraction and representation, dimension reduction of feature vector, indexing, and query specifications. As content-based multimedia retrieval is a young research field and there exists many challenging research problems, this chapter also addresses several research issues for the future research.

Estudo insere-se na área de estudo de usuários, relata os resultados de um survey, realizado no Distrito Federal (DF), Brasil, com o objetivo de identificar as necessidades e o uso de informação pelas mulheres, tendo utilizado uma amostra aleatória de 37 entrevistas estruturadas. Inclui breve revisão de literatura sobre estudos de usuários com o objetivo de identificar as necessidades e uso da informação por diferentes categorias de indivíduos; apresenta a evolução dos estudos de usuários em termos metodológicos e de abordagem quantitativa e qualitativa; e estudos relacionados à necessidade e uso de informação do gênero mulher. Nesta pesquisa foram identificados os graus de importância de alguns temas, as fontes e instrumentos que interessam à mulher do DF e a gradação de freqüência do uso, bem como, analisada a relação dessas fontes de preferência com o perfil de escolaridade, idade e renda.AbstractThis study may be considered an information user needs study. Abstract This paper studies multiple-deep automated vehicle storage and retrieval systems (AVS/RS) known for their high throughput performance and flexibility. Compared to a single-deep system, multiple-deep AVS/RS has a better space area utilisation. However, a relocation cycle occurs, reducing the throughput performance whenever another stock-keeping unit (SKU) blocks a retrieving SKU. The SKU retrieval sequence is undetermined, meaning that the arrangement is unknown, and all SKUs have an equal probability of retrieval. In addition to the shuttle carrier, a satellite vehicle is attached to the shuttle carrier and is used to access storage locations in multiple depths. A discrete event simulation of multiple-deep AVS/RS with a tier captive shuttle carrier was developed. We focused on the dual command cycle time assessment of nine different storage and relocation assignment strategies combinations in the simulation model. The results of a simulation study for (i) Random, (ii) Depth-first and (iii) Nearest neighbour storage and relocation assignment strategies combinations are examined and benchmarked for five different AVS/RS case study configurations with the same number of storage locations. The results display that the fivefold and sixfold deep AVS/RS outperform systems with fewer depths by utilising Depth-first storage and Nearest neighbour relocation assignment strategies.

Along with Kansei information being successfully introduced to information retrieval systems, particularly multimedia retrieval systems, many Kansei retrieval systems have been implemented in the past two decades. And, it has become clear that the traditional multimedia retrieval systems using key-words or/and other text information are not enough in many applications, because that they can not deal with sensitive words reflecting user’s subjectivity. In this chapter, Kansei retrieval systems efficiently taking user’s subjectivity into account will be discussed in detail. Like many traditional retrieval systems, Kansei retrieval systems are also based on databases system, which are called Kansei databases. After roughly introducing some existing Kansei retrieval systems is a general flow for designing Kansei retrieval systems. Also, we will discuss how to speed up the Kansei retrieval systems by using multidimensional indexing technologies and you will learn that our proposed multidimensional index structure, Adaptive R*-tree (AR*-tree for short), is more suitable to Kansei retrieval systems than the traditional multidimensional indexing technologies.
