With the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT), applications have become smarter and connected devices give rise to their exploitation in all aspects of a modern city. As the volume of the collected data increases, Machine Learning (ML) techniques are applied to further enhance the intelligence and the capabilities of an application. The field of smart transportation has attracted many researchers and it has been approached with both ML and IoT techniques. In this review, smart transportation is considered to be an umbrella term that covers route optimization, parking, street lights, accident prevention/detection, road anomalies, and infrastructure applications. The purpose of this paper is to make a self-contained review of ML techniques and IoT applications in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and obtain a clear view of the trends in the aforementioned fields and spot possible coverage needs. From the reviewed articles it becomes profound that there is a possible lack of ML coverage for the Smart Lighting Systems and Smart Parking applications. Additionally, route optimization, parking, and accident/detection tend to be the most popular ITS applications among researchers.

In today's world of advanced technologies in IoT and ITS in smart cities scenarios, there are many different projections such as improved data propagation in smart roads and cooperative transportation networks, autonomous and continuously connected vehicles, and low latency applications in high capacity environments and heterogeneous connectivity and speed. This chapter presents the performance of the speed of vehicles on roadways employing machine learning methods. Input variable for each learning algorithm is the density that is measured as vehicle per mile and volume that is measured as vehicle per hour. And the result shows that the output variable is the speed that is measured as miles per hour represent the performance of each algorithm. The performance of machine learning algorithms is calculated by comparing the result of predictions made by different machine learning algorithms with true speed using the histogram. A result recommends that speed is varying according to the histogram.

Abstract. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is one of the main components of a smart city. ITS have several purposes including the increase of the safety and comfort of the passengers and the reduction of the road accidents. ITS can enhance safety in three modes before, within and after the collision by preventing accident via assistive system, sensing the collision situation and calculating the time of the collision and providing the emergency response in a timely manner. The main objective of this paper is related to the smart transportation services which can be provided at the time of the collision and after the accident. After the accident, it takes several minutes to hours for the person to contact the emergency department. If an accident takes place for a vehicle in a remote area, this time increases and that may cause the loss of life. In addition, determination of the exact location of the accident is difficult by the emergency centres. That leads to the possibility of erroneous responder act in dispatching the rescue team from the nearest hospital. A new assistive intelligent system is designed in this regard that includes both software and hardware units. Hardware unit is used as an On-Board Unit (OBU), which consists of GPS, GPRS and gyroscope modules. Once OBU detects the accident, a notification system designed and connected to OBU will sent an alarm to the server. The distance to the nearest emergency center is calculated using Dijkstra algorithm. Then the server sends a request for assistance to the nearest emergency centre. The proposed system is developed and tested at local laboratory conditions. The results show that this system can reduce Ambulance Arrival Time (AAT). The preliminary results and architecture of the system have been presented. The inclination angle determined by the proposed system along with the car position identified by the installed GPS sensor assists the crash/accident warning part of the system to send a help request to the nearest road emergency centre. These results verified that the probability of having a remote and smart car crash/accident decision support system using the proposed system has been improved compared to that of the existing systems.

Automatic License Plate Recognition has been a recurrent research topic due to the increasing number of cameras available in cities, where most of them, if not all, are connected to the Internet. The video traffic generated by the cameras can be analyzed to provide useful insights for the transportation segment. This paper presents the development of an intelligent vehicle identification system based on optical character recognition (OCR) method to be used on intelligent transportation systems. The proposed system makes use of an intelligent parking system named Smart Parking Service (SPANS), which is used to manage public or private spaces. Using computer vision techniques, the SPANS system is used to detect if the parking slots are available or not. The proposed system makes use of SPANS framework to capture images of the parking spaces and identifies the license plate number of the vehicles that are moving around the parking as well as parked in the parking slots. The recognition of the license plate is made in real-time, and the performance of the proposed system is evaluated in real-time.

In urban transportation systems, bicycle sharing systems are majorly deployed in major cities of both developed and developing countries. The recent boom of bicycle sharing system along with its upgraded technology have opened new opportunities towards urban transportation system. With the enlargement of intelligent transportation systems (ITS's), smart bicycle sharing schemes are more popular to smart cities as a green transportation mode. In this article, the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence-based monitoring devices have been proposed for the bicycles. This system contains a harmful exhaust gas sensor, wireless module, and a GPS receiver and camera that are capable to send data with time and date stamping. In addition, sensor also integrated on the bicycle for the fall detection. An artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) applied to the data collected at central server is designed to analyze the root mean square error (RMSE), and coefficient of correlation (R2). Result shows that ANN performance is better when compared to SVM.

Rising interest in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems combined with the increased availability of collected data allows the study of different methods for prevention of traffic congestion in cities. A common need in all of these methods is the use of traffic predictions for supporting planning and operation of the traffic lights and traffic management schemes. This paper focuses on comparing the forecasting effectiveness of three machine learning models, namely Random Forests, Support Vector Regression, and Multilayer Perceptron—in addition to Multiple Linear Regression—using probe data collected from the road network of Thessaloniki, Greece. The comparison was conducted with multiple tests clustered in three types of scenarios. The first scenario tests the algorithms on specific randomly selected dates on different randomly selected roads. The second scenario tests the algorithms on randomly selected roads over eight consecutive 15 min intervals; the third scenario tests the algorithms on random roads for the duration of a whole day. The experimental results show that while the Support Vector Regression model performs best at stable conditions with minor variations, the Multilayer Perceptron model adapts better to circumstances with greater variations, in addition to having the most near-zero errors.

Highly populated cities depend highly on intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) for reliable and efficient resource utilization and traffic management. Current transportation systems struggle to meet different stakeholder expectations while trying their best to optimize resources in providing various transport services. This paper proposes a Microservice-Oriented Big Data Architecture (MOBDA) incorporating data processing techniques, such as predictive modelling for achieving smart transportation and analytics microservices required towards smart cities of the future. We postulate key transportation metrics applied on various sources of transportation data to serve this objective. A novel hybrid architecture is proposed to combine stream processing and batch processing of big data for a smart computation of microservice-oriented transportation metrics that can serve the different needs of stakeholders. Development of such an architecture for smart transportation and analytics will improve the predictability of transport supply for transport providers and transport authority as well as enhance consumer satisfaction during peak periods.

The efficiency of pickup-and-delivery (P&D) activities of urban courier is adversely impacted by traffic congestion and lack of logistical innovations. The high frequency of P&D tasks offers the opportunity to achieve substantial savings in time through the implementation of route optimization, route guidance, and scheduling innovations. These innovations would require the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies for their implementation. This paper describes how such time savings can be obtained. For testing the effect of network and operating conditions on time savings, a simulation study was undertaken on synthesized networks and logistical requirements. The results show that route guidance and scheduling systems yield highly significant time savings in the P&D operation of the courier industry.Key words: courier, intelligent transportation systems, route guidance, route planning, simulation.
