The Relationship

Bent trees have been observed during the early years in juvenile plantations (less than 5 years-old) of Tectona grandis in Costa Rica. The relationship between bending and the morphological characteristics of the trees was explored. An evaluation of bent trees was conducted in six juvenile plantations (8, 17, 27, 28, 31, and 54 months old) of Tectona grandis. Site 1 with 8-month-old plantations did not display any relationship with any tree morphological variable (diameter, height, and crown weight of tree), whereas for the sites 2, 3, and 4 with 17-, 27-, and 28-month-old plantations, respectively, all the tree morphological variables were statistically correlated with the bent trees. A multiple regression analysis showed that the most influential variables were height to crown base, crown weight, diameter, and total height of the tree. An evaluation of the bending risk factor (RF) was correlated with the height to crown base, crown weight, and form factor. The modulus of elasticity and chemical compositions of bent trees differed from those of straight trees. The causes of tree bending are complex, involving, among other factors, the morphology of the trees, plantation conditions, and other factors specific to the xylem, such as the specific gravity, modulus of elasticity, and presence of calcium and magnesium in the wood.

La présente étude vise à établir les variations du duramen (pourcentage, diamètre, rayon, volume) rapportées à la hauteur des arbres et à l’épaisseur de l’aubier, ainsi que l’âge de début de formation du duramen et sa hauteur maximale pour les arbres de l’essence Tectona grandis. Les résultats de l’échantillonnage de seize plantations réparties dans différentes zones du Costa Rica, âgées de 2 à 22 ans, montrent que l’aubier est plus épais entre 2 et 10 ans d’âge qu’entre 10 et 22 ans. La formation du duramen commence à la base des arbres âgés de 2 à 3 ans, mais il n’apparaît à hauteur de poitrine qu’à partir de 3 à 4 ans. Le duramen disparaît à une hauteur allant de 0 à 90 % de la hauteur totale selon l’âge de l’arbre. Enfin, des modèles statistiques prédictifs ont été développés pour l’épaisseur de l’aubier et pour le rayon, la hauteur maximale et le pourcentage du duramen, en se basant sur le modèle Y = K0 + K1*(épaisseur de l’aubier) + K2*(hauteur relative de l’échantillonnage) + K3*(diamètre à hauteur de poitrine) + K4*(âge de l’arbre). Ces modèles indiquent des coefficients de détermination de 70 %, 90 %, 95 %, 73 % et 31 %, respectivement.

Tectona grandis L.f. (teca) es la especie forestal con fines comerciales más cultivada en Costa Rica. Dentro de las actividades de manejo de estas plantaciones se encuentran el control de arvenses y el manejo integrado de plagas y enfermedades. Recientemente se han utilizado cultivos de cobertura como método alternativo de control de arvenses, sin embargo, se desconoce la afectación de este control en las plagas. Se desarrolló una investigación para determinar el efecto de la utilización de cultivos de cobertura en el control de arvenses y evaluar la presencia de herbívoros y organismos fitopatógenos en plantaciones jóvenes de teca en el Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica. Se utilizó un diseño experimental de bloques completos al azar con 3 repeticiones y 7 tratamientos: Testigo (sin control de arvenses), Control de arvenses químico, Control de arvenses manual, Canavalia ensiformis, Vigna radiata, Mezcla entre Vigna radiata y Pueraria phaseoloides y Crotalaria juncea. Se seleccionaron como enfermdad objetivo Olivea tectonae (“roya de la teca”) y plaga objetivo Rhabdopterus sp. (“esqueletizador de la teca”) y se realizaron 2 evaluaciones de incidencia e índice promedio de severidad, cuando la plantación tenía 6 y 12 meses de edad. A pesar de que la incidencia mostró valores superiores a 60% en ambas los valores promedios de severidad se concentraron en las categorías menores. Adicionalmente en las evaluaciones realizadas no se evidenció efecto de las coberturas en el aumento de la incidencia o severidad de la enfermedad y plaga evaluadas, lo que demuestra que el uso de coberturas puede ser una alternativa viable para el control de arvenses de una plantación de teca. Por lo anterior se recomienda continuar con estudios que evalúen el efecto del uso de coberturas en la presencia y severidad de plagas en teca en distintas regiones del país.

Wood properties of young teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) is inferior, and then preservative treatment is one possible solution to enhance its service life. The uptake and movement of preservatives through wood cell structure is directly connected to the wood permeability. There are two simple methods to identify wood permeability: water soaking and bubble test methods. This paper assesses the young teak permeability by water soaking and bubble test methods. The assessment was conducted into five cm thick young-teak discs by soaking in the red-dye water and blowing air into the discs which had been coated with soap. Results show that the heartwood is less permeable than sapwood. Red-dye penetrates almost 100% of the sapwood area, and the red-dye did not penetrate in the heartwood. Red-dye only penetrates in the cracked heartwood through the void volume in the cracking heartwood. There is a transition zone between sapwood and heartwood, and it is refractory. Bubble test with air pressure from compressor could open the air-pathway in the heartwood and sapwood of young-teak discs taken from Bogor. The bubble test result of young-teak discs from Madiun showed air-pathway only in the sapwood, but heartwood. The air pressure is not capable of moving the vapour through the wood cell. It indicates that the heartwood of young-teak from Madiun is less permeable and less possibility for pressure treatment.
