Mangrove forests can ameliorate the impacts of typhoons and storms, but their extent is threatened by coastal development. The northern coast of Vietnam is especially vulnerable as typhoons frequently hit it during the monsoon season. However, temporal change information in mangrove cover distribution in this region is incomplete. Therefore, this study was undertaken to detect change in the spatial distribution of mangroves in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces and identify reasons for the cover change. Landsat satellite images from 1973 to 2020 were analyzed using the NDVI method combined with visual interpretation to detect mangrove area change. Six LULC classes were categorized: mangrove forest, other forests, aquaculture, other land use, mudflat, and water. The mangrove cover in Nghe An province was estimated to be 66.5 ha in 1973 and increased to 323.0 ha in 2020. Mangrove cover in Thanh Hoa province was 366.1 ha in 1973, decreased to 61.7 ha in 1995, and rose to 791.1 ha in 2020. Aquaculture was the main reason for the loss of mangroves in both provinces. Overall, the percentage of mangrove loss from aquaculture was 42.5% for Nghe An province and 60.1% for Thanh Hoa province. Mangrove restoration efforts have contributed significantly to mangrove cover, with more than 1300 ha being planted by 2020. This study reveals that improving mangrove restoration success remains a challenge for these provinces, and further refinement of engineering techniques is needed to improve restoration outcomes.

 Hutan mangrove di Pantai Karangsong, Kabupaten Indramayu merupakan salah satu hutan mangrove di Pantai Utara Jawa yang telah direhabilitasi. Kawasan rehabilitasi mangrove telah dimanfaatkan oleh masyarakat sebagai lokasi wisata (ekowisata) dan lokasi mata pencaharian. Agar pengembangan selanjutnya dapat berjalan secara tepat, diperlukan perencanaan berdasarkan faktor-faktor penting yang berkaitan dengan pengelolaan hutan tersebut dalam kategori masyarakat yang berbeda, yaitu masyarakat yang berada dalam kawasan hutan mangrove, pengelola kawasan hutan mangrove dan pelaku perikanan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah adalah untuk mengetahui faktor penting untuk pengembangan di kawasan rehabilitasi mangrove berdasarkan aktivitas masyarakat. Penelitian ini dilakukan di kawasan rehabilitasi hutan mangrove Pantai Karangsong, Kabupaten Indramayu pada bulan Agustus – September 2016. Metode yang digunakan adalah studi kasus yang bersifat deskriptif. Variabel penelitian terdiri dari kondisi sosial dan ekonomi masyarakat yaitu pendidikan, umur, pekerjaan dan pendapatan. Pengambilan data dilakukan melalui wawancara menggunakan kuisioner tertutup dan observasi untuk melakukan pengamatan terhadap sumberdaya manusia. Analisis data menggunakan analisis multivariat, yaitu analisis faktor. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa faktor-faktor penting yang didapatkan untuk kategori masyarakat terdiri dari (1) wisata alam, (2) faktor fungsi dan manfaat, (3) faktor partisipasi masyarakat dalam pengelolaan serta frekuensi pemanfaatan dan faktor (4) pengetahuan. Faktor penting untuk kategori pengelola terdiri dari (1) faktor upaya pengelolaan dan (2) faktor pengaruhnya serta respon masyarakat terhadap pengelolaan. Faktor penting untuk kategori pelaku perikanan terdiri dari (1) faktor pengetahuan, (2) faktor frekuensi pemanfaatan serta fungsi dan (3) faktor perusak ekosistem.    The mangrove forest of Karangsong, Indramayu Regency is one of the mangrove forests on the northern coast of Java that has been rehabilitated. Mangrove rehabilitation area had been utilized by the public as a tourist site (ecotourism) and location of livelihood. In order for future development can be run properly, required planning based on important factors related to the forest management in different communities, i.e., communities that are in the area of mangrove forests, mangrove forest area manager and performer fisheries. The purpose of this research was to know the important factors for development of mangrove rehabilitation area based on the activity of the society. This research was conducted in the mangrove forests rehabilitation area on the beach of Karangsong, District of Indramayu in August – September 2016.This research was a case study. The variables consisted of research social and economic conditions, namely education, ages, employment and income.. Data were collected through interviews using the enclosed questionnaire and observations. Data analysis using multivariate analysis of factors. The results showed that the important factors obtained for category community consisted of (1) nature tourism factors, (2) the factors of function and benefits, (3) the factors of community participation in management as well as the frequency of utilization and (4) factors of knowledge. An important factor for the category manager consisted of (1) factors and management efforts (2) factors influence as well as the response of the community towards the management. An important factor for the category of perpetrators of fisheries consisted of (1) the factors of knowledge, (2) the frequency utilization factor as well as the functions and (3) factors of damaging the ecosystem.

Implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals requires countries to determine targets for the protection, conservation, or restoration of coastal ecosystems such as mangrove forests by 2030. Satellite remote sensing provides historical and current data on the distribution and dynamics of mangrove forests, essential baseline data that are needed to design suitable policy interventions. In this study, Landsat time series were used to map trends and dynamics of mangrove change over a time span of 30 years (1987–2017) in protected areas of Hainan Island (China). A support vector machine algorithm was combined with visual interpretation of imagery and result showed alternating periods of expansion and loss of mangrove forest at seven selected sites on Hainan Island. Over this period, there was a net decrease in mangrove area of 9.3%, with anthropic activities such as land conversion for aquaculture, wastewater disposal and discharge, and tourism development appearing to be the likely drivers of this decline in cover. Long-term studies examining trends in land use cover change coupled with assessments of drivers of loss or gain enable the development of evidence based on policy and legislation. This forms the basis of financing of natural reserves of management and institutional capacity building, and facilitates public awareness and participation, including co-management.

Mangrove forests as natural resources have potential value as natural tourism. This research aims to analyze the potential of mangroves based on the ecological perspective of flora fauna and socio-cultural to be a natural tourism area. The object of this research is the mangrove forest and its resources. The research location was Angsana Village, Angsana District, Tanah Bumbu Regency, South Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. The equipment used was a set of survey tools and questionnaires. The flora and fauna characteristics of the mangrove forest were determined by the species compositions analysis with a tabulation matrix method. The socio-cultural aspects were analyzed descriptively. The potential of mangrove forests as natural tourism was analyzed using a tabulation matrix and narrative descriptive. The composition of tree species as a whole consisted of 14 species. There were 19 species of birds, 6 species of mammals, and 7 species of fish found in the mangrove forest area. The community strongly agree that mangroves can be used as a tourist area. Angsana Village has mangrove vegetation around the river which has approximately 43.61 Ha in size was naturally undisturbed and accessible by a road. The mangrove forest of the village of Angsana is estimated about 200 meters far from Angsana Beach. Based on an analysis of the potential of mangrove forests, this area has the potentials to be developed as natural tourism and even ecotourism. Mangrove natural tourism area can be developed as additional tourism objects that are already running from Angsana Beach tourist destinations.

Background Mangrove forests provide many ecosystem services, including the provision of habitat that supports avian biodiversity. However, hurricanes can knock down trees, alter hydrologic connectivity, and affect avian habitat. In 1995, Hurricanes Opal and Roxanne destroyed approximately 1,700 ha of mangrove forest in Laguna de Términos, Mexico. Since then, hydrological restoration has been implemented to protect the mangrove forest and its biodiversity. Methods Since avian communities are often considered biological indicators of ecosystem quality, avian diversity and species relative abundance were evaluated as indicators of mangrove restoration success by comparing undisturbed mangrove patches with those affected by the hurricanes. Using bird surveys, similarity analyses, and generalized linear models, we evaluated the effects of water quality variables and forest structure on the relative abundance and diversity of the avian community in disturbed, restored, and undisturbed mangrove patches. Results Higher bird species richness and relative abundances were found in disturbed and restored sites compared to the undisturbed site. After restoration, values of frequency of flooding, water temperature, tree density, and the number of tree species were more similar to that of the undisturbed site than to the values of the disturbed one. Such variables influenced the relative abundance of bird guilds in the different habitat conditions. Furthermore, some insectivorous bird species, such as the Yellow Warbler and Tropical Kingbird, were found to be similarly abundant in both undisturbed and restored sites, but absent or very low in occurrence at the disturbed site. Conclusions Collectively, our results strongly suggest that hydrologic restoration helps to enhance niche availability for different bird guilds, including water and canopy bird species. Our work can help inform management strategies that benefit avian communities in mangrove forests and wetland systems.

Nusa Penida, Bali was designated as a Marine Protected Area (MPA) by the Klungkung Local Government in 2010 with support from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Republic of Indonesia. Mangrove forests located in Nusa Lembongan Island inside the Nusa Penida MPA jurisdiction have decreased in biomass quality and vegetation cover. It’s over the last decades due to influences from natural phenomena and human activities, which obstruct mangrove growth. Study the mangrove forest changes related to the marine protected areas implementation are important to explain the impact of the regulation and its influence on future conservation management in the region. Mangrove forest in Nusa Penida MPA can be monitored using remote sensing technology, specifically Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from Landsat satellite imagery combined with visual and statistical analysis. The NDVI helps in identifying the health of vegetation cover in the region across three different time frames 2003, 2010, and 2017. The results showed that the NDVI decreased slightly between 2003 and 2010. It’s also increased significantly by 2017, where a mostly positive change occurred landwards and adverse change happened in the middle of the mangrove forest towards the sea.

Poverty distribution of different types of forest-related communities: Case study in Wan Abdul Rachman Forest Park and mangrove forest in Sidodadi Village, Lampung Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 3153-3163. Forest has important role in community because it can influence social characteristics as well as the quality of life of the household. In the tropics, many people living around forest are in poor conditions. Sidodadi Village of Pesawaran District, Lampung Province bordered to Wan Abdul Rachman (WAR) Forest Park in the upland and mangrove forest in the coastal area represents a good case study of communities living adjacent to forests with different ecosystem type. The research objective was to identify and analyze the characteristics and the level of household poverty of community living around two forested areas (i.e. upland forest in WAR Forest Park versus mangrove forest) in Sidodadi Village. In this village, households were interviewed by randomly selecting 215 respondents. The poverty was analyzed using five indicators, i.e. the economic characteristics, material wealth, health, infrastructure and services, and knowledge. The study found that base on the aggregated five poverty indicators there were no households categorized as poor. However, analyses in each indicator had diverse results. Based on the indicators of knowledge and economic characteristics, we found that most respondents were classified as poor while based on three other indicators there were classified as rich. The poor knowledge level was dominantly in older people who have low formal and informal education, while poverty in terms of economic characteristics due to limited opportunity to have better livelihood. Results also indicate that the poor households were located near mangrove forests while those classified as rich were located near upland forest in WAR Forest Park. The rich households had better opportunities to earn income from limited uses of forest in the upland area, yet similar opportunities were not obtained from mangrove forests. Sustainable use of mangrove forests should be considered to support the livelihood option of the surrounding community to enhance their wealth.

Abstract Estuaries in Brazil are highly threatened environments and habitat loss is the main influential factor for the increase in the number of strandings of Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus) calves in the north-eastern region of the country. The aim of the present study was to analyse and quantify the spatiotemporal dynamics of mangroves in the state of Paraíba and the association with manatee calf stranding events. The study area encompassed 10 remaining mangroves along the coast of the state, four of which were located within protected areas. Information on the mangrove forests was obtained from satellite images from the last four decades. Data on stranded Antillean manatee calves were obtained from a databank with records from 1980 to 2019. The data were analysed using geoprocessing techniques and statistical analyses. The results demonstrated changes in the mangrove forest over time, with larger areas existing during the 1980s, reductions in the following periods but a slight increase in the last decade. The number of stranded Antillean manatee calves increased over the years, with stranding events concentrated mainly on the northern coast of the state. The smallest number of stranding events occurred in the 1980s, when the mangrove forests were larger. Our findings confirm that the integrity of mangroves is of extreme importance to the maintenance and sustainability of Antillean manatee populations.

Hutan mangrove merupakan sumber daya lahan basah yang berfungsi sebagai penyangga kehidupan. Namun demikian, dalam beberapa dekade terakhir, hutan mangrove banyak yang rusak atau hilang, terutama akibat konversi mangrove menjadi lahan tambak. Kegiatan restorasi mangrove pada lahan bekas tambak telah mulai dilakukan dalam beberapa tahun terakhir. Peneltian ini bertujuan untuk mengukur pemulihan jenis-jenis mangrove melalui kegiatan restorasi mangrove pada lahan bekas tambak serta mengetahui komposisi jenis hutan mangrove hasil restorasi dimaksud di pesisir timur Sumatera Utara. Sebanyak 30 plot contoh yang masing masing berukuran 10 m x 10 m telah dibangun di setiap umur tegakan (5-9 tahun) dan hutan sekunder. Seluruh pohon yang berdiameter (DBH) ≥ 2 cm di dalam plot contoh diidentifikasi dan diukur diamaternya. Secara keseluruhan, terdapat 14 jenis mangrove pada seluruh plot contoh atau setara dengan 42,42% dari seluruh jenis tumbuhan mangrove sejati yang terdapat di Indonesia. Dengan demikian, restorasi mangrove mampu memulihkan keanekaragaman jenis mangrove, sehingga restorasi mangrove pada lahan bekas tambak perlu dipromosikan dalam upaya mengembalikan berbagai fungsi mangrove bagi ketahanan masyarakat dan sumberdaya pesisir.   Mangrove forest is a wetland resource that serves as a buffer zone. However, in the past few decades, many mangrove forests have been damaged or converted, mainly into ponds. To address such a problem, mangrove restoration activities have begun in recent years. This research aims to measure the recovery of mangrove species on ex-pond land and indicate the type of mangrove forest composition through the mangrove restoration activities in North Sumatra. A total of 30 sample plots, with 10 m x 10 m size each, have been built at each stand age (5-9 years) and secondary forests. All trees with a diameter (DBH) ≥ 2 cm in the sample plot are identified and measured. The results show that overall, there are 14 types of mangroves in all sample plots, equivalent to 42.42% of all pure mangrove species in Indonesia. Therefore, it can be concluded that the activities can restore the diversity of mangrove species, so that needs to be promoted as an effort to restore the various functions of mangroves to resilience the community and coastal resources.

The differences in mangrove forest structure, climate, and the linear relationship between climate and mangrove forest structure on the northern coast of Vietnam were analyzed using mangrove forest data measured in 28 sample plots (Dong Rui-8, Xuan Thuy National Park-12 and Lach Sung-8) and climate data collected at the meteorological stations near the study sites (Dong Rui-Tien Yen station, Xuan Thuy National Park-Van Ly station and Lach Sung-Thanh Hoa station) in the period of 1994 - 2012. Results showed that the differences in mangrove forest structure (stem diameter, biomass and basal area) and climate (temperature and rainfall) among study sites were significant (p < 0.05). Stem diameter, tree height, basal area and biomass had positive linear relationship with annual average temperature and January average temperature, and negative linear relationship with annual rainfall. A consistently low regression coefficient of less than 0.66 was found among the variables. However, all the regression models were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The results could be used to develop multiple linear regression models to predict the change of mangrove ecosystems.

<p>ABSTRACT<br />Mangrove forests in Tongke-tongke is an example of success story of natural resources self governing. The research aims to describe the dynamic of local institution development and its effectiveness in mangrove management growing on accretion land in Tongke-tongke village, East Sinjai, South Sulawesi. This is a qualitative research by using case study method. The results showed that even without government support, collective action in mangrove management can be realized through various rules and agreements formulated collectively by local institution. Achievement of its management was evaluated by using design principles of Ostrom. Norms and rules agreed by the community has functioned as guideline in mangrove management following enforcement of sanctions for noncompliance. Accretion land under Act No. 16 of 2004 is state property but due to late support and government attendance has caused state property status becomes illegitimate. Ambiguity in tenurial status causing property typology of mangrove forests in East Sinjai can not be classified strictly. This then instigate multilayer property status for different types of products and services produced impying changes in access right to mangrove forest. The success of communities to manage mangrove sustainably in Eastern Sinjai should be supported with the provision of legal access to the public.<br />Keywords: acccess right, accreting land, institution, mangrove, property status,</p><p>ABSTRAK<br />Hutan mangrove di Tongke-tongke merupakan success story kemandirian masyarakat dalam melakukan pengelolaan sumberdaya alam secara lestari. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mendeskripsikan dinamika perkembangan serta efektivitas kelembagaan lokal dalam pengelolaan mangrove yang tumbuh pada tanah timbul di Desa Tongke-tongke, Sinjai Timur, Sulawesi Selatan. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa walaupun tanpa dukungan pemerintah, aksi kolektif untuk menanam mangrove dapat diwujudkan melalui berbagai aturan dan kesepakatan yang dirumuskan secara kolektif melalui kelembagaan lokal yang dievaluasi menggunakan desain prinsip Ostrom. Norma dan aturan yang disepakati telah berperan menjadi patokan tindak masyarakat dalam menjaga tegakan mangrove berikut upaya penegakan sangsi bagi yang melanggar. Meskipun tanah timbul secara de jure menurut Undang-undang No 16 Tahun 2004 berstatus lahan negara (state property), namun negara yang terlambat hadir menyebabkan status state property menjadi tidak legitimate. Ambiguitas dalam status property menyebabkan tipologi property hutan mangrove di Sinjai Timur tidak dapat diklasifikasikan secara tegas sehingga menghasilkan status property yang berlapis (multilayer property) untuk berbagai jenis produk dan jasa yang dihasilkan yang kemudian berimplikasi pada perubahan hak akses masyarakat terhadap hutan mangrove.
