Measurements reported in the literature on ultimate analysis of various types of torrefied woody biomass, comprising 152 data points, have been compiled and empirical correlations are developed to predict the carbon content, hydrogen content, and heating value of a torrefied wood as a function of solid mass yield. The range of torrefaction temperature, residence time and solid yield of the collected data is 200–300 °C, 5–60 min and 58–97%, respectively. Two correlations are proposed for carbon content with a coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) of 81.52% and 89.86%, two for hydrogen content with R 2 of 79.01% and 88.45%, and one for higher heating value with R 2 of 92.80%. The root mean square error (RMSE) values of the proposed correlations are 0.037, 0.028, 0.059, 0.043 and 0.023, respectively. The predictability of the proposed relations is examined with an additional set of experimental data and compared with the existing correlations in the literature. The new correlations can be used as a useful tool when designing torrefaction plants, furnaces, or gasifiers operating on torrefied wood.

While the US nut industry is growing, markets for nut by-products, particularly nutshells and tree prunings, have not kept pace. Torrefaction is a thermochemical process used to improve physicochemical properties of biomass for energy and other applications. The goal of the paper was to characterize the effects of a range of torrefaction conditions on the properties of nut by-product feedstock. The process consists of thermal treatment of biomass at a temperature between 200 and 300°C in the absence of oxygen, where final material properties of the torrefied biomass depend on the temperature, heating rate, and residence time. In general, torrefied biomass exhibits higher hydrophobicity and calorific value with reduced moisture absorption compared to untreated biomass, making it an ideal fuel source for energy applications compared to raw biomass. In this study, almond shells of soft, semi-soft, and hardshell varieties, as well as walnut shells and almond wood, were torrefied at two different temperatures (230 and 290°C) and three different residence times (20, 40, and 60 min) in order to characterize the physicochemical properties. The thermal behavior of raw and heat-treated biomass was investigated by TGA analysis, elemental analysis, pH, helium pycnometry, FTIR spectroscopy, and dynamic vapor sorption analysis.

Abstract The current research assessed the evolution of gases from pyrolysis of biomass and from subsequent combustion of bio-chars. Raw and torrefied biomass was pyrolyzed in nitrogen or carbon dioxide under high heating rates (104 K/s) and high temperatures (1450 K). Pyrolyzates gases were monitored for carbon, nitrogen and sulfur oxides. Subsequently, generated bio-chars were burned in both conventional (air) and simulated oxy-combustion (O2/CO2) gases. In principle, oxy-combustion of renewable biomass coupled with carbon capture and utilization/sequestration can help remove atmospheric CO2. Pyrolysis of biomass in CO2 generated lower char yields, lower SO2 and NO, and higher CO2, CO and HCN mole fractions, compared to pyrolysis in N2. HCN was the most prominent among all measured nitrogen-bearing gases (HCN, NH3, NO) from biomass pyrolysis. Compared to their combustion in air, bio-chars burned more effectively in 30%O2/79%CO2 and less effectively in 21%O2/79%CO2. Emissions of CO were the lowest in 21%O2/79%CO2. Emissions of HCN were the highest in air combustion, and decreased with increasing O2 mole fraction in oxy-combustion; emissions of NO were highest in 30%O2/79%CO2, and emissions of NO were dominant during bio-char oxy-combustion compared with other N-compounds. In oxy-combustion bio-chars released the lowest emissions of SO2. Finally, the emissions of CO, NO, HCN, and SO2 from combustion of DDGS bio-chars were higher than those from RH bio-chars, because of different physicochemical properties.
