Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) of a gasoline spray, where the mixture was ignited rapidly during or after injection, were performed in comparison to a previous experimental study with quantitative flame motion and soot formation data [SAE 2020-01-0291] and an accompanying Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulation at the same conditions. The present study reveals major shortcomings in common RANS combustion modeling practices that are significantly improved using LES at the conditions of the study, specifically for the phenomenon of rapid ignition in the highly turbulent, stratified mixture. At different ignition timings, benchmarks for the study include spray mixing and evaporation, flame propagation after ignition, and soot formation in rich mixtures. A comparison of the simulations and the experiments showed that the LES with Dynamic Structure turbulence were able to capture correctly the liquid penetration length, and to some extent, spray collapse demonstrated in the experiments. For early and intermediate ignition timings, the LES showed excellent agreement to the measurements in terms of flame structure, extent of flame penetration, and heat-release rate. However, RANS simulations (employing the common G-equation or well-stirred reactor) showed much too rapid flame spread and heat release, with connections to the predicted turbulent kinetic energy. With confidence in the LES for predicted mixture and flame motion, the predicted soot formation/oxidation was also compared to the experiments. The soot location was well captured in the LES, but the soot mass was largely underestimated using the empirical Hiroyasu model. An analysis of the predicted fuel–air mixture was used to explain different flame propagation speeds and soot production tendencies when varying ignition timing.

In this work, a single sector lean burn model combustor operating in pilot only mode has been investigated using both experiments and computations with the main objective of analyzing the flame structure and soot formation at conditions relevant to aero-engine applications. Numerical simulations were performed using the large eddy simulation (LES) approach and the conditional moment closure (CMC) combustion model with detailed chemistry and a two-equation model for soot. The CMC model is based on the time-resolved solution of the local flame structure and allows to directly take into account the phenomena associated to molecular mixing and turbulent transport, which are of great importance for the prediction of emissions. The rig investigated in this work, called big optical single sector rig, allows to test real scale lean burn injectors. Experiments, performed at elevated pressure and temperature, corresponding to engine conditions at part load, include planar laser-induced fluorescence of OH (OH-PLIF) and phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) and have been complemented with new laser-induced incandescence (LII) measurements for soot location. The wide range of measurements available allows a comprehensive analysis of the primary combustion region and can be exploited to further assess and validate the LES/CMC approach to capture the flame behavior at engine conditions. It is shown that the LES/CMC approach is able to predict the main characteristics of the flame with a good agreement with the experiment in terms of flame shape, spray characteristics and soot location. Finite-rate chemistry effects appear to be very important in the region close to the injection location leading to the lift-off of the flame. Low levels of soot are observed immediately downstream of the injector exit, where a high amount of vaporized fuel is still present. Further downstream, the fuel vapor disappears quite quickly and an extended region characterized by the presence of pyrolysis products and soot precursors is observed. The strong production of soot precursors together with high soot surface growth rates lead to high values of soot volume fraction in locations consistent with the experiment. Soot oxidation is also very important in the downstream region resulting in a decrease of the soot level at the combustor exit. The results show a very promising capability of the LES/CMC approach to capture the main characteristics of the flame, soot formation, and location at engine relevant conditions. More advanced soot models will be considered in future work in order to improve the quantitative prediction of the soot level.

In-cylinder mixture preparation and early combustion heat release are studied using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for direct injection (DI) diesel with high exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and early injection timing. Both LES and traditional Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) calculations are carried out using KIVA-3V release 2 and compared with experimental results of medium load LTC-diesel (Low Temperature Combustion) cases. Simulations presented in this paper are carried out using KH-RT (Kelvin Helmholtz – Rayleigh Taylor) breakup model for spray atomization and CHEMKIN n-heptane mechanism for combustion and both dynamic structure LES and RNG (re-normalized group) kε RANS for turbulence model. Although engine simulation using LES model poses significant challenges on practical engine grids, significant agreement with LTC-diesel experiments is observed by using an additional spray source term for modeling the effect of liquid sprays on sub-grid kinetic energy transport calculation in engines. Results when compared to RANS, demonstrate that LES is able to predict local spots of early heat release resulting in more accurate prediction of start of combustion timing and early heat release phasing. Mixing due to bulk fluid motion such as swirl is also observed more distinctively in LES calculations.

Gasdynamics of detonation waves was widely studied within last hundred years - analytically, experimentally, and numerically. The majority of classical studies of the XX century were concentrated on inviscid aspects of detonation structure and propagation. There was a widespread opinion that detonation is such a fast phenomenon that viscous e¨ects should have insigni¦cant in§uence on its propagation. When the era of calculations based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier- Stokes (RANS) and large eddy simulation approaches came into effect, researchers pounced on practical problems with complex geometry and with the interaction of many physical effects. There is only a limited number of works studying the in§uence of viscosity on detonation propagation in supersonic §ows in ducts (i. e., in the presence of boundary layers).

The present work focuses on the comparison of the numerical simulation of sheet/cloud cavitation with the Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes and Large Eddy Simulation(RANS and LES) methods around NACA0012 hydrofoil in water flow. Three kinds of turbulence models—SST k-ω, modified SST k-ω, and Smagorinsky’s model—were used in this paper. The unstable sheet cavity and periodic shedding of the sheet/cloud cavitation were predicted, and the simulation results, namelycavitation shape, shedding frequency, and the lift and the drag coefficients of those three turbulence models, were analyzed and compared with each other. The numerical results above were basically in accordance with experimental ones. It was found that the modified SST k-ω and Smagorinsky turbulence models performed better in the aspects of cavitation shape, shedding frequency, and capturing the unsteady cavitation vortex cluster in the developing and shedding period of the cavitation at the cavitation number σ = 0.8. At a small angle of attack, the modified SST k-ω model was more accurate and practical than the other two models. However, at a large angle of attack, the Smagorinsky model of the LES method was able to give specific information in the cavitation flow field, which RANS method could not give. Further study showed that the vortex structure of the wing is the main cause of cavitation shedding.

This paper provides a discussion of several aspects of the construction of approaches that combine statistical (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes, RANS) models with large eddy simulation (LES), with the objective of making LES an economically viable method for predicting complex, high Reynolds number turbulent flows. The first part provides a review of alternative approaches, highlighting their rationale and major elements. Next, two particular methods are introduced in greater detail: one based on coupling near-wall RANS models to the outer LES domain on a single contiguous mesh, and the other involving the application of the RANS and LES procedures on separate zones, the former confined to a thin near-wall layer. Examples for their performance are included for channel flow and, in the case of the zonal strategy, for three separated flows. Finally, a discussion of prospects is given, as viewed from the writer's perspective.

Nine Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methods are used to simulate flow through two labyrinth seal geometries and are compared with a wide range of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solutions. These involve one-equation, two-equation and Reynolds Stress RANS models. Also applied are linear and nonlinear pure LES models, hybrid RANS-Numerical-LES (RANS-NLES) and Numerical-LES (NLES). RANS is found to have a maximum error and a scatter of 20%. A similar level of scatter is also found among the same turbulence model implemented in different codes. In a design context, this makes RANS unusable as a final solution. Results show that LES and RANS-NLES is capable of accurately predicting flow behaviour of two seals with a scatter of less than 5%. The complex flow physics gives rise to both laminar and turbulent zones making most LES models inappropriate. Nonetheless, this is found to have minimal tangible results impact. In accord with experimental observations, the ability of LES to find multiple solutions due to solution non-uniqueness is also observed.

Abstract Surge margin is critical for the safety of aeronautical compressors, hence predicting it early in the design process using CFD is mandatory. However, close to surge, steady-state Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations are proven inadequate. Unsteady techniques such as Unsteady RANS (URANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) can provide more reliable predictions. Nevertheless, the accuracy of such methods are dependent on the method used to handle the rotor/stator interfaces. The most precise method, the sliding mesh, requires simulating the full annulus or a periodic sector, which can be very costly. Other techniques to reduce the domain exist, such as the phase-lagged approach or geometric blade scaling, but introduce restrictive assumptions on the flow at near-stall conditions. The objective of this paper is to investigate the near-stall flow of a low-pressure compressor using unsteady methods of varying fidelity: URANS with the phase lag assumption, URANS on a periodic sector and a high-fidelity LES on a smaller periodic sector achieved using geometric blade scaling. Results are compared to experimental measurements. An overall good agreement is found. Results show that the tip leakage vortex is not the origin of the stall on the studied configuration and a hub corner separation is initiated. LES further validates the (U)RANS flow predictions and brings additional insight on unsteady flow separations.

The vortex instability in a spherical pipe trifurcation is investigated by applying a Very Large Eddy Simulation (VLES). For this approach an new adaptive turbulence model based on an extended version of the k-ε model is used. Applying a classical Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes-Simulation with the standard k-ε model is not able to forecast the vortex instability. However the prescribed VLES method is capable to predict this flow phenomenon. The obtained results show a reasonable agreement with measurements in a model test.

Mixing in pipe junctions can play an important role in exciting force and distribution of flow in pipe network. This paper investigated the cross pipe junction and proposed an improved plan, Y-shaped pipe junction. The numerical study of a three-dimensional pipe junction was performed for calculation and improved understanding of flow feature in pipe. The filtered Navier–Stokes equations were used to perform the large-eddy simulation of the unsteady incompressible flow in pipe. From the analysis of these results, it clearly appears that the vortex strength and velocity non-uniformity of centerline, can be reduced by Y-shaped junction. The Y-shaped junction not only has better flow characteristic, but also reduces head loss and exciting force. The results of the three-dimensional improvement analysis of junction can be used in the design of pipe network for industry.
