Electric forklifts are extremely important for the world’s logistics and industry. Lead acid batteries are the most common energy storage system for electric forklifts; however, to ensure more energy efficiency and less environmental pollution, they are starting to use lithium batteries. All lithium batteries need a battery management system (BMS) for safety, long life cycle and better efficiency. This system is capable to estimate the battery state of charge, state of health and state of function, but those cannot be measured directly and must be estimated indirectly using battery models. Consequently, accurate battery models are essential for implementation of advance BMS and enhance its accuracy. This work presents a comparison between four different models, four different types of optimizers algorithms and seven different experiment designs. The purpose is defining the best model, with the best optimizer, and the best experiment design for battery parameter estimation. This best model is intended for a state of charge estimation on a battery applied on an electric forklift. The nonlinear grey box model with the nonlinear least square method presented a better result for this purpose. This model was estimated with the best experiment design which was defined considering the fit to validation data, the parameter standard deviation and the output variance. With this approach, it was possible to reach more than 80% of fit in different validation data, a non-biased and little prediction error and a good one-step ahead result.

Aiming at the problem that different temperatures and working modes affect the parameter identification and state of charge (SOC) estimation of decommissioned lithium batteries, a new method based on the second-order RC equivalent circuit model combined with the recursive least square method (RLS) is proposed to introduce the forgetting factor, and combined with the extended Kalman filter algorithm (EKF) to realize the method of online parameter identification of decommissioned lithium batteries and the optimal estimation of SOC. In order to solve the problem of obtaining the optimal solution of the error covariance matrix and the measurement noise covariance matrix in EKF, the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) is used to optimize online to further improve the SOC prediction accuracy. The results show that the joint optimization algorithm can accurately identify the parameters and SOC values of retired lithium batteries, which is helpful to realize the echelon utilization of retired lithium batteries.

This paper studies the state of charge (SOC) estimation of supercapacitors and lithium batteries in the hybrid energy storage system of electric vehicles. According to the energy storage principle of the electric vehicle composite energy storage system, the circuit models of supercapacitors and lithium batteries were established, respectively, and the model parameters were identified online using the recursive least square (RLS) method and Kalman filtering (KF) algorithm. Then, the online estimation of SOC was completed based on the Kalman filtering algorithm and unscented Kalman filtering algorithm. Finally, the experimental platform for SOC estimation was built and Matlab was used for calculation and analysis. The experimental results showed that the SOC estimation results reached a high accuracy, and the variation range of estimation error was [−0.94%, 0.34%]. For lithium batteries, the recursive least square method is combined with the 2RC model to obtain the optimal result, and the estimation error is within the range of [−1.16%, 0.85%] in the case of comprehensive weighing accuracy and calculation amount. Moreover, the system has excellent robustness and high reliability.

An accurate state of charge (SOC) can provide effective judgment for the BMS, which is conducive for prolonging battery life and protecting the working state of the entire battery pack. In this study, the first-order RC battery model is used as the research object and two parameter identification methods based on the least square method (RLS) are analyzed and discussed in detail. The simulation results show that the model parameters identified under the Federal Urban Driving Schedule (HPPC) condition are not suitable for the Federal Urban Driving Schedule (FUDS) condition. The parameters of the model are not universal through the HPPC condition. A multitimescale prediction model is also proposed to estimate the SOC of the battery. That is, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is adopted to update the model parameters and the adaptive unscented Kalman filter (AUKF) is used to predict the battery SOC. The experimental results at different temperatures show that the EKF-AUKF method is superior to other methods. The algorithm is simulated and verified under different initial SOC errors. In the whole FUDS operating condition, the RSME of the SOC is within 1%, and that of the voltage is within 0.01 V. It indicates that the proposed algorithm can obtain accurate estimation results and has strong robustness. Moreover, the simulation results after adding noise errors to the current and voltage values reveal that the algorithm can eliminate the sensor accuracy effect to a certain extent.

Accurate estimation of battery state of charge (SOC) is important to ensure operation of electric vehicle. Since a nonlinear feature exists in battery system and extended kalman filter algorithm performs well in solving nonlinear problems, the paper proposes an EKF-based method for estimating SOC. In order to obtain the accurate estimation of SOC, this paper is based on composite battery model that is a combination of three battery models. The parameters are identified using the least square method. Then a state equation and an output equation are identified. All experimental data are collected from operating EV in Beijing. The results of the experiment show  that the relative error of estimation of state of charge is reasonable, which proves this method has good estimation performance.

Abstract The state of charge (SoC) of the battery is a typical characterization of the operating state of the battery and criterion for the battery management system (BMS) control strategy, which must be evaluated precisely. The establishment of an accurate algorithm of SoC estimation is of great significance for BMS, which can help the driver judge the endurance mileage of electric vehicle (EV) correctly. In this paper, a second-order resistor-capacity (RC) equivalent circuit model is selected to characterize the electrical characteristics based on the electrochemical model of the LiFePO4/graphene (LFP/G) hybrid cathode lithium-ion battery. Moreover, seven open circuit voltage (OCV) models are compared and the best one of them is used to simulate the dynamic characteristics of the battery. It is worth mentioning that an improved test method is proposed, which is combined with least square for parameters identification. In addition, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm is selected to estimate the SoC during the charging and discharging processes. The simulation results show that the EKF algorithm has the higher accuracy and rapidity than the KF algorithm.

Charging a group of series-connected batteries of a PV-battery hybrid system exhibits an imbalance issue. Such imbalance has severe consequences on the battery activation function and the maintenance cost of the entire system. Therefore, this paper proposes an active battery balancing technique for a PV-battery integrated system to improve its performance and lifespan. Battery state of charge (SOC) estimation based on the backpropagation neural network (BPNN) technique is utilized to check the charge condition of the storage system. The developed battery management system (BMS) receives the SOC estimation of the individual batteries and issues control signal to the DC/DC Buck-boost converter to balance the charge status of the connected group of batteries. Simulation and experimental results using MATLAB-ATMega2560 interfacing system reveal the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

An accurate estimation technique of the state of charge (SOC) of batteries is an essential task of the battery management system. The adaptive Kalman filter (AEKF) has been used as an obsever to investigate the SOC estimation effectiveness. Therefore, The SOC is a reflexion of the chemistry of the cell which it is the key parameter for the battery management system. It is very complex to monitor the SOC and control the internal states of the cell. Three battery models are proposed and their state space models have been established, their parameters were identified by applying the least square method. However, the SOC estimation accuracy of the battery depends on the model and the efficiency of the algorithm. In this paper, AEKF technique is presented to estimate the SOC of Lead acid battery. The experimental data is used to identify the parameters of the three models and used to build different open circuit voltage–state of charge (OCV-SOC) functions relationship. The results shows that the SOC estimation based-model which has been built by hight order RC model can effectively limit the error, hence guaranty the accuracy and robustness.
