The Energy Internet (EI) has been proposed as an evolution of the power system in order to improve its efficiency in terms of energy generation, transmission and consumption. It aims to make the use of renewable energy effective. Herein, the energy router has been considered the crucial element that builds the net structure between the different EI components by connecting and controlling the bidirectional power and data flow. The increased use of renewable energy sources in EI has contributed to the creation of a new competitive energy trading market known as peer-to-peer energy trading, which enables each component to be part of the trading process. As a consequence, the concept of energy routing is increasingly relevant. In fact, there are three issues that need to be taken into account during the energy routing process: the subscriber matching, the energy-efficient path and the transmission scheduling. In this work, we first proposed a peer-to-peer energy trading scheme to ensure a controllable and reliable EI. Then, we introduced a new energy routing approach to address the three routing issues. A subscriber matching mechanism is designed to determine which producer/producers should be assigned for each consumer by optimizing the energy cost and transmission losses. This mechanism provides a solution for both mono and multi-source consumers. An improved ant colony optimization-based energy routing protocol was developed to determine a non-congestion minimum loss path. For the multi-source consumer case, an energy particle swarm optimization algorithm was proposed to choose a set of producers and to decide the amount of energy that should be collected from each producer to satisfy the consumer request. Finally, the performance of the proposed protocol, in terms of power losses, cost and computation time was compared to the best existing algorithms in the literature. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract Renewable-energy resources require overwhelming adoption by the common masses for safeguarding the environment from pollution. In this context, the prosumer is an important emerging concept. A prosumer in simple terms is the one who consumes as well as produces electricity and sells it either to the grid or to a neighbour. In the present scenario, peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading is gaining momentum as a new vista of research that is viewed as a possible way for prosumers to sell energy to neighbours. Enabling P2P energy trading is the only method of making renewable-energy sources popular among the common masses. For making P2P energy trading successful, blockchain technology is sparking considerable interest among researchers. Combined with smart contracts, a blockchain provides secure tamper-proof records of transactions that are recorded in distributed ledgers that are immutable. This paper explores, using a thorough review of recently published research work, how the existing power sector is reshaping in the direction of P2P energy trading with the application of blockchain technology. Various challenges that are being faced by researchers in the implementation of blockchain technology in the energy sector are discussed. Further, this paper presents different start-ups that have emerged in the energy-sector domain that are using blockchain technology. To give insight into the application of blockchain technology in the energy sector, a case of the application of blockchain technology in P2P trading in electrical-vehicle charging is discussed. At the end, some possible areas of research in the application of blockchain technology in the energy sector are discussed.

Currently, there is few research works focusing on the optimal power dispatch of hybrid renewable energy systems operating in conjunction with hybrid energy storage systems, precisely the combination of pumped hydro storage and battery storage systems. Moreover, there is a lack of studies that focusing on analysing the potential energy cost reduction resulting from the economic power dispatch applied to hybrid energy systems combining grid-interactive renewable energy sources with hybrid energy storages under the peer to peer energy sharing scheme. Given the fact that each of these concepts has the potential benefit of reducing the operation energy cost; this study proposes an optimal energy management model of two grid-interactive prosumers operating in a peer to peer energy sharing mode to supply the loads both from the hybrid renewable sources and hybrid storage systems whilst minimizing the cost of energy purchased from the national grid. Simulation were conducted using different scenarios linked to the internal power sharing pricing structures. The results showed that the proposed arrangement has the potential to reduce substantial energy cost; decrease the reliance of the prosumer from the grid as well as reducing the need of having a larger storage.

Electricity generation from distributed renewable energy sources is strongly increasing worldwide. Due to their intermittency in nature, the large scale integration of these renewable energy sources creates acute challenges to the existing energy system network. Thus, it is highly demanding to secure a reliable balance between energy generation and consumption. To overcome such challenges, peer-to-peer energy trading using blockchains on microgrid networks can play a significant role. In this paper, we present the concept of an efficient algorithm that can be useful for energy trading using blockchain from both the prosumers and consumers end. We also show the detailed outline of the methodology for energy transactions in a comprehensive way. The outcome of this study prove that if implemented properly this methodology can efficiently balance supply and demand locally and provide socio-economic benefits to the participants.

Hybrid energy systems (HESs) are an excellent solution for electrification of remote rural areas where the grid extension is difficult or not economical. Usually, HES generally integrate one or several renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal with fossil fuel powered diesel/petrol generator to provide electric power where the electricity is either fed directly into the grid or to batteries for energy storage. This chapter presents a review on the solution approaches for determining the HES systems based on various objective functions (e.g. economic, social, technical, environmental and health impact). In order to take account of environmental and health impacts from energy systems, several energy optimization model was developed for minimizing pollution and maximizing the production of renewable energy.

Because of the near-term risk of extreme weather events and other adverse consequences from climate change, and, at least in the longer term, global fossil fuel depletion, there is world-wide interest in shifting to noncarbon energy sources, especially renewable energy (RE). Because of possible limitations on conventional renewable energy sources, researchers have looked for ways of overcoming these shortcomings by introducing radically new energy technologies. The largest RE source today is bioenergy, while solar energy and wind energy are regarded as having the largest technical potential. This paper reviews the literature on proposed new technologies for each of these three RE sources: microalgae for bioenergy, photolysis and airborne wind turbines. The main finding is that their proponents have underestimated the difficulties facing their introduction on a very large scale.

The increasing resort to renewable energy distributed generation, which is needed to mitigate anthropogenic CO2 emissions, leads to challenges concerning the proper operation of electric distribution systems. As a result of the intrinsic nature of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), this generation shows a high volatility and a low predictability that make the balancing of energy production and consumption difficult. At the same time, the electrification of new energy-intensive sectors (such as heating) is expected. This complex scenario paves the way for new sources of flexibility that will have more and more relevance in the coming years. This paper analyses how the electrification of the heating system, combined with an electric flexibility utilisation module, can be used to mitigate the problems related to the fluctuating production of RES. By using Power-to-Heat (P2H) technologies, buildings are able to store the overproduction of RES in the form of thermal energy for end-use according to the principle of the so-called Virtual Energy Storage (VES). A context-aware demand flexibility extraction based on the VES model and the flexibility upscale and utilisation on district-level through grid simulation and energy flow optimisation is presented in the paper. The involved modules have been developed within the PLANET (PLAnning and operational tools for optimising energy flows and synergies between energy NETworks) H2020 European project and interact under a unified co-simulation framework with the PLANET Decision Support System (DSS) for the analysis of multi-energy scenarios. DSS has been used to simulate a realistic future energy scenario, according to which the imbalance problems triggered by RES overproduction are mitigated with the optimal exploitation of the demand flexibility enabled by VES.

As more and more renewable energy sources (RES) integrated into the conventional distribution system, how to make the current electric grid more reliable and efficient is becoming an important topic the world must face. In order to achieve these goals, grid-connected hybrid energy systems (HES) which contain battery energy storage systems (BESS) and many other advanced technologies have been developed and applied. Many benefits of BESS, such as high density of energy and power, have fast response in energy time-shift, frequency regulation, and so on. This paper focuses on the fluctuation alleviation and power quality improvement of grid-connected HES with high penetration level of RES. A multistage dispatch strategy of BESS for HES is proposed in this paper to mitigate the randomness and intermittence of the power flowed in HES because of high penetration level of RES integration. Four other conventional strategies are also discussed for evaluating the performance of the method proposed in this paper. Detailed cases and corresponding discussions are implemented, and the results show that the method proposed in this paper is more effective and robust than the other conventional strategies.
