This paper presents analysis and study of the single-phase transverse-flux machine. The finite element method results of the machine are compared with the laboratory measurements to confirm the accuracy of the computer model. This computer model is then used to investigate the effect of the machine’s geometry on its output characteristics. Parametric analysis of the machine is carried out to find the optimal air-gap diameter at which the cogging torque of the machine is minimal. In addition, the influence of the coil cross-section on the torque and output power characteristics of the machine is investigated and discussed.

In this paper, we look for non-uniform Rayleigh beams isospectral to a given uniform Rayleigh beam. Isospectral systems are those that have the same spectral properties, i.e. the same free vibration natural frequencies for a given boundary condition. A transformation is proposed that converts the fourth-order governing differential equation of non-uniform Rayleigh beam into a uniform Rayleigh beam. If the coefficients of the transformed equation match with those of the uniform beam equation, then the non-uniform beam is isospectral to the given uniform beam. The boundary-condition configuration should be preserved under this transformation. We present the constraints under which the boundary configurations will remain unchanged. Frequency equivalence of the non-uniform beams and the uniform beam is confirmed by the finite-element method. For the considered cases, examples of beams having a rectangular cross section are presented to show the application of our analysis.

The article presents a concept for a new design of the well-known Transverse Flux Machine (TFM) made with the use of a flat core used in classical electrical machines. The proposed design was first analytically verified and was subsequently verified using the finite element method, which fully corroborated the results. The simulations show that a set of three single-phase TFM machines with slotted flat rotor yokes generates a torque over three times greater than that of an induction motor and twice as large as Fractional Slot Concentrated Winding—Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (FSCW-PMSM). The performed comparative calculations confirmed that the torque generated by machines operating on principles similar to TFM can generate a torque much greater than those currently in common use.

Nickel oxide (NiO) is a p-type oxide and nitrogen is one of the dopants used for modifying its properties. Until now, nitrogen-doped NiO has shown inferior optical and electrical properties than those of pure NiO. In this work, we present nitrogen-doped NiO (NiO:N) thin films with enhanced properties compared to those of the undoped NiO thin film. The NiO:N films were grown at room temperature by sputtering using a plasma containing 50% Ar and 50% (O2 + N2) gases. The undoped NiO film was oxygen-rich, single-phase cubic NiO, having a transmittance of less than 20%. Upon doping with nitrogen, the films became more transparent (around 65%), had a wide direct band gap (up to 3.67 eV) and showed clear evidence of indirect band gap, 2.50–2.72 eV, depending on %(O2-N2) in plasma. The changes in the properties of the films such as structural disorder, energy band gap, Urbach states and resistivity were correlated with the incorporation of nitrogen in their structure. The optimum NiO:N film was used to form a diode with spin-coated, mesoporous on top of a compact, TiO2 film. The hybrid NiO:N/TiO2 heterojunction was transparent showing good output characteristics, as deduced using both I-V and Cheung’s methods, which were further improved upon thermal treatment. Transparent NiO:N films can be realized for all-oxide flexible optoelectronic devices.

Airworthiness standards of Korea recommend verifying structural safety by experimental tests and analytical methods, owing to the development of analysis technology. In this study, we propose a methodology to verify the structural safety of aircraft components based on airworthiness requirements using an analytical method. The structural safety and fatigue integrity of a linear actuator for flap control of aircraft was evaluated through numerical analysis. The static and fatigue analyses for the given loads obtained from the multibody dynamics analysis were performed using the finite element method. Subsequently, the margin of safety and vulnerable area were acquired and the feasibility of the structural safety evaluation using the analytical method was confirmed. The proposed numerical analysis method in this study can be adopted as an analytical verification methodology for the airworthiness standards of civilian aircraft in Korea.

This study aims to observe the influence of the changing stator dimension on the air gap magnetic flux density (Bg) in the design of a single-phase radial flux permanent magnet generator (RFPMG). The changes in stator dimension were carried out by using three different wire diameters as stator wire, namely, AWG 14 (d = 1.63 mm), AWG 15 (d = 1.45 mm) and AWG 16 (d = 1.29 mm). The dimension of the width of the stator teeth (Wts) was fixed such that a larger stator wire diameter will require a larger stator outside diameter (Dso). By fixing the dimensions of the rotor, permanent magnet, air gap (lg) and stator inner diameter, the magnitude of the magnetic flux density in the air gap (Bg) can be determined. This flux density was used to calculate the phase back electromotive force (Eph). The terminal phase voltage (V∅) was determined after calculating the stator wire impedance (Z) with a constant current of 3.63 A. The study method was conducted by determining the design parameters, calculating the design variables, designing the generator dimensions using AutoCad and determining the magnetic flux density using FEMM simulation.  The results show that the magnetic flux density in the air gap and the phase back emf Eph slightly decrease with increasing stator dimension because of increasing reluctance. However, the voltage drop is more dominant when the stator coil wire diameter is smaller. Thus, a larger diameter of the stator wire would allow terminal phase voltage (V∅) to become slightly larger. With a stator wire diameter of 1.29, 1.45 and 1.63 mm, the impedance values of the stator wire (Z) were 9.52746, 9.23581 and 9.06421 Ω and the terminal phase voltages (V∅) were 220.73, 221.57 and 222.80 V, respectively. Increasing the power capacity (S) in the RFPMG design by increasing the diameter (d) of the stator wire will cause a significant increase in the percentage of the stator maximum current carrying capacity wire but the decrease in stator wire impedance is not significant. Thus, it will reduce the phase terminal voltage (V∅) from its nominal value.

Based on the free boundary theory and variational method, this paper presents a Ritz method to compute the instantaneous hydrodynamic forces of a real bearing subject to any perturbed motions of the rotor. The given method manipulates the cavitation region by simply introducing a parameter to match the free boundary condition and, as a result, a very simple approximate formula of oil-film pressure were obtained leading to great saving of computing time. The numerical examples show the high accuracy of the proposed formulas. This oil-film force model is also used to analyze the nonlinear dynamics of a rigid unbalanced rotor with elliptical bearing support. The results well agree with those of the oil-film force model computed by the finite element method and the computing time is saved greatly.

AbstractA computer model based on the finite element method has been applied to evaluate the effect of the parasitic area between contact and diffusion edges on end resistance measurements in four terminal Kelvin resistor structures. The model is then applied to Al/Ti/n+ Si contacts and a value of contact resistivity of Qc = 1.8×10−7.Ωcm2 is derived. For comparison, the use of a self-aligned structure to avoid parasitic effects is presented and the first experimental results obtained on Al/Ti/n+Si and Al/CoSi2/n+Si contacts are shown and discussed.

This paper discusses particle deposition in rectangle air-conditioning duct using RSM (Reynold Stress Model) and random trajectory particle model. Particle with nominal diameters of 10-200μm are simulated at each of three nominal air speed: 4m/s, 6m/s and 8m/s, respectively, in the cross-section sizes of 160×120, 500×250, 1000×320mm. In simulation, the paper compares and analyzes the influence factors of particles deposition in volume surface ratio of the given duct. The results show that: 1) particle deposition velocity increases with volume surface ratio; 2) As the inlet air speed increasing, when the particles deposited to floor and vertical wall, the image of dimensionless deposition velocity Vs dimensionless relaxation time shows a coincident trend when the duct cross-section sizes are 500×250, 1000×320mm, but has great differences with the image of 160×120mm.

The paper presents the results of a study on the distribution of stresses on the contours of underground workings, the cross section of which has the form of a trapezoid and an ellipse. The distribution of stresses at the points of workings contours is obtained at the given values of uniform pressure and the lateral expansion coefficient of the rock. The graphic images of stress diagrams acting on the contours of the considered workings are given.
