In this paper a side-by-side comparison between synchronous reluctance machines (SynRMs) with concentrated and distributed windings is performed. The characteristics, parameters, and the installation space of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) with concentrated windings used in a 13 V automotive cooling fan system (CFMs) are used as requirements and specifications. For that, eight SynRMs with different stator and rotor topologies are investigated and optimized by means of FE-based electromagnetic optimization. Knowing the challenges associated with the development of mechanically stable SynRM rotor structures, for two selected cross-sections in view of being prototyped, designs checks are performed to ensure robust operation at up to two times the required operating speed. The simulated results were verified by means of measurements performed using two different types of loading systems, i.e., with the real ventilator and using a DC machine as a load. Based on this, the relative differences between all three motor technologies in terms of important quantities (e.g., torque-speed characteristic, torque ripple, efficiency, power factor and ultimately the size) are highlighted.

Misinformation often continues to influence people’s cognition even after corrected (the ‘continued influence effect of misinformation’, the CIEM). This study investigated the role of information relevance in the CIEM by questionnaire survey and experimental study. The results showed that information with higher relevance to the individuals had a larger CIEM, indicating a role of information relevance in the CIEM. Personal involvement might explain the effects of information relevance on the CIEM. This study provides insightful clues for reducing the CIEM in different types of misinformation and misinformation with varying relevance.

Drawings, illustrations, and field sketches play an important role in Earth Science since they are used to record field observations, develop interpretations, and communicate results in reports and scientific publications. Drawing geology in the field furthermore facilitates observation and maximizes the value of fieldwork. Every geologist, whether a student, academic, professional, or amateur enthusiast, will benefit from the ability to draw geological features accurately. This book describes how and what to draw in geology. Essential drawing techniques, together with practical advice in creating high quality diagrams, are described the opening chapters. How to draw different types of geology, including faults, folds, metamorphic rocks, sedimentary rocks, igneous rocks, and fossils, are the subjects of separate chapters, and include descriptions of what are the important features to draw and describe. Different types of sketch, such as drawings of three-dimensional outcrops, landscapes, thin-sections, and hand-specimens of rocks, crystals, and minerals, are discussed. The methods used to create technical diagrams such as geological maps and cross-sections are also covered. Finally, modern techniques in the acquisition and recording of field data, including photogrammetry and aerial surveys, and digital methods of illustration, are the subject of the final chapter of the book. Throughout, worked examples of field sketches and illustrations are provided as well as descriptions of the common mistakes to be avoided.

AbstractThe results of regelation experiments, in which a single object is pulled through ice, cannot be applied directly to the problem of basal sliding in glaciers because the two systems have different geometries. When the force applied to a single object is small, impurities trapped in the regelation water-layer around the object inhibit the regelation process. At larger forces, above the Drake-Shreve transition point, impurities are shed in a trace behind the object. However, when ice moves over a series of obstacles a trace may exist above and below the transition point. The regelation velocity below the transition point is not reduced by the effect of trapped impurities. In an experiment in which brass cylingerrs of various cross-sections rotate in ice, the ratio between the expected regelation velocity, calculated using the basal-sliding theory of Nye, and the measured regelation velocity is 8±2, both above and below the transition point. The same ratio has been obtained by other workers with wires of similar thermal conductivity above the transition point. Measurements of température differences indicate that supercooling cannot be the main source of the unexpectedly low regelation velocities above the transition point.

Wearing face masks in times of COVID-19 is one of the essential keystones for effectively decreasing the rate of new infections and thus for mitigating the negative consequences for individuals as well as for society. Acceptance of wearing masks is still low in many countries, making it extremely difficult to keep the pandemic at bay. In an experimental study, participants ( N = 88) had to assess how strange they felt when wearing a face mask while being exposed to displays of groups of varying numbers of mask wearers. Three different types of face masks were shown: simple homemade masks, FFP2 masks, and loop scarfs. The higher the frequency of people wearing masks in the displayed social group, the less strange the participants felt about themselves, an essential precondition for accepting wearing masks. This effect of a descriptive social norm was particularly effective when people saw others wearing less intrusive masks, here, simple homemade masks.

Throwing a ball is a primary skill in team-handball and can be directly influenced by the properties of different types of balls. Therefore, the use of different balls (i.e., methodic ball) recommended by the handball federations (e.g., IHF) and the education guidelines, are important in teaching throwing. Previous studies have shown that movement patterns and throwing velocity can be influenced by different ball types and sizes. However, the influence of these factors on throwing accuracy has not been investigated in detail yet. This study aims to replicate the findings of previous studies on increasing throwing velocity in children by comparing the use of a soft methodic ball with a size 0 handball. Furthermore, this study investigates the influence of these balls on throwing accuracy. In an experimental study, participants (10-years of age) threw a soft methodic ball and a size 0 ball at target areas in a handball goal. For all the throws, throwing velocity and accuracy were measured. Commensurate with previous research, throwing velocity was higher for the soft methodic ball compared to a size 0 ball. No difference was found in accuracy, although, it is worth mentioning that the participants were only experienced in throwing using the size 0 ball. Moreover, only one-third of the children favored throwing with a size 0 ball, which is what they are used to in training and competition. The results of our study, therefore, confirm that using soft methodic balls additionally, positively influences the throwing velocity and has no negative effect on the accuracy in throwing among young handball beginners.

AbstractThe investigation of matching of endoprosthesis tibial components to the bone cross section is of interest for the manufacturer as well as for the surgeon. On the one hand, a systemic design of the prosthesis and the assortment is possible, on the other hand, a better matching implantation is enabled on the basis of experience of this study. CT sections were segmented manually using a CAD system and fitted by spline functions, then superseded with cross sections of the tibial component of a modified Hintermann H3 prosthesis. The principal moments of inertia, the direction of the principal axes and the area of the section were evaluated. Based on the relative differences of the principal moments of inertia, recommendations for application of the different prosthesis size and its selection with the surgery can be made.

Abstract.This work measured $ \mathrm{d}\sigma/\mathrm{d}\Omega$dσ/dΩ for neutral kaon photoproduction reactions from threshold up to a c.m. energy of 1855MeV, focussing specifically on the $ \gamma p\rightarrow K^0\Sigma^+$γp→K0Σ+, $ \gamma n\rightarrow K^0\Lambda$γn→K0Λ, and $ \gamma n\rightarrow K^0 \Sigma^0$γn→K0Σ0 reactions. Our results for $ \gamma n\rightarrow K^0 \Sigma^0$γn→K0Σ0 are the first-ever measurements for that reaction. These data will provide insight into the properties of $ N^{\ast}$N* resonances and, in particular, will lead to an improved knowledge about those states that couple only weakly to the $ \pi N$πN channel. Integrated cross sections were extracted by fitting the differential cross sections for each reaction as a series of Legendre polynomials and our results are compared with prior experimental results and theoretical predictions.

AbstractNegative ion collision-induced dissociation (CID) of underivatized N-glycans has proved to be a simple, yet powerful method for their structural determination. Recently, we have identified a series of such structures with GalNAc rather than the more common galactose capping the antennae of hybrid and complex glycans. As part of a series of publications describing the negative ion fragmentation of different types of N-glycan, this paper describes their CID spectra and estimated nitrogen cross sections recorded by travelling wave ion mobility mass spectrometry (TWIMS). Most of the glycans were derived from the recombinant glycoproteins gp120 and gp41 from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), recombinantly derived from human embryonic kidney (HEK 293T) cells. Twenty-six GalNAc-capped hybrid and complex N-glycans were identified by a combination of TWIMS, negative ion CID, and exoglycosidase digestions. They were present as the neutral glycans and their sulfated and α2→3-linked sialylated analogues. Overall, negative ion fragmentation of glycans generates fingerprints that reveal their structural identity.
