Accurately estimating the online state-of-charge (SOC) of the battery is one of the crucial issues of the battery management system. In this paper, the gas–liquid dynamics (GLD) battery model with direct temperature input is selected to model Li(NiMnCo)O2 battery. The extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm is elaborated to couple the offline model and online model to achieve the goal of quickly eliminating initial errors in the online SOC estimation. An implementation of the hybrid pulse power characterization test is performed to identify the offline parameters and determine the open-circuit voltage vs. SOC curve. Apart from the standard cycles including Constant Current cycle, Federal Urban Driving Schedule cycle, Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule cycle and Dynamic Stress Test cycle, a combined cycle is constructed for experimental validation. Furthermore, the study of the effect of sampling time on estimation accuracy and the robustness analysis of the initial value are carried out. The results demonstrate that the proposed method realizes the accurate estimation of SOC with a maximum mean absolute error at 0.50% in five working conditions and shows strong robustness against the sparse sampling and input error.

The mapping between open circuit voltage (OCV) and state of charge (SOC) is critical to the lithium-ion battery management system (BMS) for electric vehicles. In order to solve the poor accuracy in the local SOC range of most OCV models, an OCV model fusion method for SOC estimation is proposed. According to the characteristics of the experimental OCV–SOC curve, the method divides SOC interval (0, 100%) into several sub-intervals, and respectively fits the OCV curve segments in each sub-interval to obtain a corresponding number of OCV sub-models with local high precision. After that, the OCV sub-models are fused through the continuous weight function to obtain fusional OCV model. Regarding the OCV curve obtained from low-current OCV test as the criterion, the fusional OCV models of LiNiMnCoO2 (NMC) and LiFePO4 (LFP) are compared separately with the conventional OCV models. The comparison shows great fitting accuracy of the fusional OCV model. Furthermore, the adaptive cubature Kalman filter (ACKF) is utilized to estimate SOC and capacity under a dynamic stress test (DST) at different temperatures. The experimental results show that the fusional OCV model can effectively track the performance of the OCV–SOC curve model.

Abstract— Battery is one of the important components in the development of renewable energy technology. This paper presents a method for estimating the State of Charge (SoC) for a 4Ah Li-ion battery. State of Charge (SoC) is the status of the capacity in the battery in the form of a percentage which makes it easier to monitor the battery during use. Coulomb calculations are widely used, but this method still contains errors during integration. In this paper, SoC measurement using Open Circuit Voltage Compensation is used for the determination of the initial SoC, so that the initial SoC reading is more precise, because if the initial SoC reading only uses a voltage sensor, the initial SoC reading is less precise which affects the next n second SoC reading. In this paper, we present a battery management system design or commonly known as BMS (Battery Management System) which focuses on the monitoring function. BMS uses a voltage sensor in the form of a voltage divider circuit and an ACS 712 current sensor to send information about the battery condition to the microcontroller as the control center. Besides, BMS is equipped with a protection relay to protect the battery. The estimation results of the 12volt 4Ah Li-ion battery SoC with the actual reading show an error of less than 1%.Keywords—Battery Management System, Modified Coulomb Counting, State of Charge.

Abstract The state of charge (SoC) of the battery is a typical characterization of the operating state of the battery and criterion for the battery management system (BMS) control strategy, which must be evaluated precisely. The establishment of an accurate algorithm of SoC estimation is of great significance for BMS, which can help the driver judge the endurance mileage of electric vehicle (EV) correctly. In this paper, a second-order resistor-capacity (RC) equivalent circuit model is selected to characterize the electrical characteristics based on the electrochemical model of the LiFePO4/graphene (LFP/G) hybrid cathode lithium-ion battery. Moreover, seven open circuit voltage (OCV) models are compared and the best one of them is used to simulate the dynamic characteristics of the battery. It is worth mentioning that an improved test method is proposed, which is combined with least square for parameters identification. In addition, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm is selected to estimate the SoC during the charging and discharging processes. The simulation results show that the EKF algorithm has the higher accuracy and rapidity than the KF algorithm.

Open-Circuit-Voltage (OCV) is an essential part of battery models for state-of-charge (SOC) estimation. In this paper, we propose a new parametric OCV model, which considers the staging phenomenon during the lithium intercalation/deintercalation process. Results show that the new parametric model improves SOC estimation accuracy compared to other existing OCV models. Moreover, the model is shown to be suitable and effective for battery state-of-health monitoring. In particular, the new OCV model can be used for incremental capacity analysis (ICA), which reveals important information on the cell behavior associated with its electrochemical properties and aging status.

AbstractAn accurate state of charge (SOC) estimation in battery management systems (BMS) is of crucial importance to guarantee the safe and effective operation of automotive batteries. However, the BMS consistently suffers from inaccuracy of SOC estimation. Herein, we propose a SOC estimation approach with both high accuracy and robustness based on an improved extended Kalman filter (IEKF). An equivalent circuit model is established, and the simulated annealing-particle swarm optimization (SA-PSO) algorithm is used for offline parameter identification. Furthermore, improvements have been made with noise adaptation, a fading filter and a linear-nonlinear filtering based on the traditional EKF method, and rigorous mathematical proof has been carried out accordingly. To deal with model mismatch, online parameter identification is achieved by a dual Kalman filter. Finally, various experiments are performed to validate the proposed IEKF. Experimental results show that the IEKF algorithm can reduce the error to 2.94% under dynamic stress test conditions, and robustness analysis is verified with noise interference, hence demonstrating its practicability for extending to state estimation of battery packs applied in real-world operating conditions.

The state of charge estimation of a pure electric vehicle power battery pack is one of the important contents of the battery management system. Improving the estimation accuracy of the battery pack’s SOC is conducive to giving full play to its performance and preventing overcharge and discharge of a single battery. At present, the open-circuit voltage ampere-hour integral method is traditionally used to estimate the SOC value of the battery pack; however, this estimation method is not accurate enough to correct the initial value of SOC and cannot solve the problem of current time integration error between this correction and the next correction. As for the battery performance and characteristics of electric vehicles, it is pointed out that the size of the model value will affect the estimation accuracy of the Kalman signal value. Based on the analysis of the factors to be referred to in the calculation and estimation of SOC by Kalman for pure electric vehicles, the scheme is improved considering the change of battery model value, and the Kalman scheme is proposed. The feasibility and accuracy of the scheme are proved by several battery simulation experiments.

The open circuit voltage (OCV) of lithium-ion batteries is widely used in battery modeling, state estimation, and management. However, OCV is a function of state of charge (SOC) and battery temperature (Tbat) and is very hard to estimate in terms of time efficiency and accuracy. This is because two problems arise in normal operations: (1) Tbat changes with the current (I), which makes it very hard to obtain the data required to estimate OCV—terminal voltage (U) data of different I under the same Tbat; (2) the difference between U and OCV is a complex nonlinear function of I and is very difficult to accurately calculate. Therefore, existing methods have to design special experiments to avoid these problems, which are very time consuming. The proposed method consists of a designed test and a data processing algorithm. The test is mainly constant current tests (CCTs) of large I, which is time-efficient in obtaining data. The algorithm solves the two problems and estimates OCV accurately using the test data. Experimental results and analyses showed that experimental time was reduced and estimation accuracy was adequate.

Accurate estimation of the state of charge (SOC) is an important criterion to prevent the batteries from being over-charged or over-discharged, and this assures an electric vehicle’s safety and reliability. To investigate the effect of different operating conditions on the SOC estimation results, a dual-polarization model (DPM) and a fractional-order model (FOM) are established in this study, taking into account the prediction accuracy and structural complexity of a battery model. Based on these two battery equivalent circuit models (ECMs), a hybrid Kalman filter (HKF) algorithm is adopted to estimate the SOC of the battery; the algorithm comprehensively utilizes the ampere-hour (Ah) integration method, the Kalman filter (KF) algorithm, and the extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm. The SOC estimation results of the DPM and FOM, under the dynamic stress test (DST), federal urban driving schedule (FUDS), and hybrid pulse power characteristic (HPPC) cycle conditions, are compared and analyzed through six sets of experiments. Simulation results show that the SOC estimation accuracy of both the models is high and that the errors are within the range of ±0.06. Under any operating conditions, the SOC estimation error, based on the FOM, is always lower than the SOC estimation error of the DPM, but the adaptability of the FOM is not as high as that of the DPM.
