In modern power systems, reliable provision of grid services (e.g., primary and ancillary services) are highly dependent on automation systems in order to have monitoring, processing, decision making and communication capabilities. The operational flexibility of automation systems is essential for the reliable operation of power systems during and after disruptive events. However, this is restricted by integrated hardware-software platforms. Therefore, it will be difficult to reconfigure control strategies during run time. This paper presents the concept of Grid Function Virtualization (GFV) as a potential approach to improve the operational flexibility of grid automation systems. GFV has been proposed to offer a new way to deploy and manage grid services by leveraging virtualization technology. The main idea of GFV is to run grid services (i.e., software implementation of services) independently from underlying hardware. To realize the important design considerations, the GFV architecture and its building blocks is elaborated in details. To this end, an exhaustive review of applications of virtualization in several domains is provided to show the importance of virtualization in improving flexibility and resource utilization. Finally, the advantages of the proposed concept to deal with disruptions in power systems is demonstrated in a proof of concept based on a CIGRE MV benchmark grid.

This paper reports the relevant aspects of a novel experimental test facility for research on fault tolerant control design and condition monitoring of fluid power systems recently constructed at the University of Manitoba. Common faults and their effects on the operation of valve controlled hydraulic actuators, such as those found in aerospace applications, are summarized first. The manuscript then presents the main features of the test rig and the modifications made to simulate various faults. The design also incorporates techniques to easily simulate load conditions from viscous forces to complex dynamic loads. The significance of the test rig in the development of advanced condition monitoring and fault tolerant control strategies is also illustrated by the presentation of the results of some recent research work conducted using the test facility. By sharing their experience with other investigators in this active area of fluid power research, the authors hope to establish a national benchmark test facility for the objective evaluation of state-of-the-art monitoring and control strategies for fluid power systems.

Faults in electrical power systems are among the key factors and sources to network disturbances, however control strategies are among key faults clearing techniques for the sake of safe operational mode of the system.Some researchers have shown various limitations of control strategies such as slow dynamic response,inability to switch Off and On network remotely and fault clearing time. For a system with wind energy technologies, if the power flow of a wind turbine is interrupted by a fault, the intermediate-circuit voltage between the machine-side converter and line-side converter will fall in unacceptably high values.To overcome the aforementioned issues, this paper used a Matlab simulations and experiments in order to analyze and validate the results.The results showed that fault ride through (FRT) with SCADA Viewer software are more adaptable to the variations of voltage and wind speed in order to avoid loss of synchronism. Therefore at the speed of 12.5m/s a wind produced a rated power of 750W and remained in synchronization before and after a fault created and cleared but worked as generator meanwhile at speed of 3.4m/s wind disconnected from grid and started working as a motor and consumed active power (P=-25watts) and voltage dip at 100% .For the protection purpose, the DC chopper and crowbar should be integrated towards management of excess energy during faults cases.

Future electrical power systems will be dominated by power electronic converters, which are deployed for the integration of renewable power plants, responsive demand, and different types of storage systems. The stability of such systems will strongly depend on the control strategies attached to the converters. In this context, laboratory-scale setups are becoming the key tools for prototyping and evaluating the performance and robustness of different converter technologies and control strategies. The performance evaluation of control strategies for dynamic frequency support using fast active power regulation (FAPR) requires the urgent development of a suitable power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) setup. In this paper, the most prominent emerging types of FAPR are selected and studied: droop-based FAPR, droop derivative-based FAPR, and virtual synchronous power (VSP)-based FAPR. A novel setup for PHIL-based performance evaluation of these strategies is proposed. The setup combines the advanced modeling and simulation functions of a real-time digital simulation platform (RTDS), an external programmable unit to implement the studied FAPR control strategies as digital controllers, and actual hardware. The hardware setup consists of a grid emulator to recreate the dynamic response as seen from the interface bus of the grid side converter of a power electronic-interfaced device (e.g., type-IV wind turbines), and a mockup voltage source converter (VSC, i.e., a device under test (DUT)). The DUT is virtually interfaced to one high-voltage bus of the electromagnetic transient (EMT) representation of a variant of the IEEE 9 bus test system, which has been modified to consider an operating condition with 52% of the total supply provided by wind power generation. The selected and programmed FAPR strategies are applied to the DUT, with the ultimate goal of ascertaining its feasibility and effectiveness with respect to the pure software-based EMT representation performed in real time. Particularly, the time-varying response of the active power injection by each FAPR control strategy and the impact on the instantaneous frequency excursions occurring in the frequency containment periods are analyzed. The performed tests show the degree of improvements on both the rate-of-change-of-frequency (RoCoF) and the maximum frequency excursion (e.g., nadir).

The use of Direct Current (DC) transmission links in power systems is increasing continuously. Thus, it is important to develop new techniques to model the inclusion of these devices in network analysis, in order to allow studies of the operation and expansion planning of large-scale electric power systems. In this context, the main objective of this paper is to present a new methodology for a simultaneous AC-DC power flow for a multi-terminal High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system with a generic representation of the DC network. The proposed methodology is based on a full Newton formulation for solving the AC-DC power flow problem. Equations representing the converters and steady-state control strategies are included in a power flow problem formulation, resulting in an expanded Jacobian matrix of the Newton method. Some results are presented based on HVDC test systems to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In this thesis, we describe the one-way quantum computer [Formula: see text], a scheme of universal quantum computation that consists entirely of one-qubit measurements on a highly entangled multiparticle state, i.e. the cluster state. We prove the universality of the [Formula: see text], describe the underlying computational model and demonstrate that the [Formula: see text] can be operated fault-tolerantly. In Sec. 2, we show that the [Formula: see text] can be regarded as a simulator of quantum logic networks. In this way, we prove the universality and establish the link to the network model — the common model of quantum computation. We also indicate that the description of the [Formula: see text] as a network simulator is not adequate in every respect. In Sec. 3, we derive the computational model underlying the [Formula: see text], which is very different from the quantum logic network model. The [Formula: see text] has no quantum input, no quantum output and no quantum register, and the unitary gates from some universal set are not the elementary building blocks of [Formula: see text] quantum algorithms. Further, all information that is processed with the [Formula: see text] is the outcomes of one-qubit measurements and thus processing of information exists only at the classical level. The [Formula: see text] is nevertheless quantum-mechanical, as it uses a highly entangled cluster state as the central physical resource. In Sec. 4, we show that there exist nonzero error thresholds for fault-tolerant quantum computation with the [Formula: see text]. Further, we outline the concept of checksums in the context of the [Formula: see text], which may become an element in future practical and adequate methods for fault-tolerant [Formula: see text] computation.

The article shows computer simulation of the mechanical, thermal power systems and electronics and automation systems for the modern educational process organized remotely during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The article describes the computer models made by the author, analyzes and highlights the positive aspects of such simulation for conducting distant learning experiments, visual and detailed presentation of theoretical material and making conditions for obtaining high-quality education even under difficult pandemic conditions.

Recently, reconfigurable drones have gained particular attention in the field of automation and flying robots. Unlike the conventional drones, they are characterized by a variable mechanical structure in flight, geometric adaptability, aerial reconfiguration, high number of actuators and control inputs, and variable mathematical model. In addition, they are exploited to flight in more cluttered environments, avoid collisions with obstacles, transport and grab objects, cross narrow and small spaces, decrease different aerial damages, optimize the consumed energy, and improve agility and maneuverability in flight. Moreover, these new drones are considered as a viable solution to provide them with specific and additional functionalities. They are a promising solution in the near future, since they allow increasing considerably the capabilities and performance of classical drones in terms of multi-functionalities, geometric adaptation, design characteristics, consumed energy, control, maneuverability, agility, efficiency, obstacles avoidance, and fault tolerant control. This paper explores very interesting and recent research works, which include the classification, the main characteristics, the various applications, and the existing designs of this particular class of drones. Besides, an in-depth review of the applied control strategies will be presented. The links of the videos displaying the results of these researches will be also shown. A comparative study between the different types of flying vehicles will be established. Finally, several new challenges and future directions for reconfigurable drones will be discussed.

The integration of distributed generation (DG) systems based on renewable energy sources (RES) by using power converters is an emerging technology in modern power systems. Among the control strategies applied to this new configuration, the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) approach has proven to be an attractive solution due providing suitable dynamic performance. Thus, this paper presents a dynamic analysis of gridtied converters controlled by using VSG concept. This analysis is based on a dynamic model that describes the DG power flow transient characteristics. Based on this model, the grid impedance parameters variation effects on the VSG controllers dynamic performance are discussed. Simulation results are presented to evaluate the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis performed.
