Aero-fuel centrifugal pumps are important power plants in aero-engines. Unlike most of the existing centrifugal pumps, a combination impeller is integrated with the pump to improve performance. First, the critical geometrical parameters of the combination impeller and volute are given. Then, the effects of the combination impeller on the flow characteristics of the impeller and volute are clarified by comparing simulation results with that of the conventional impeller, where the effectiveness of the selected numerical method is validated by an acceptable agreement between simulation and experiment. Finally, the experiment is set to test the external performance of the studied pump. A significant feature of this study is that the flow characteristics are significantly ameliorated by reducing the flow losses that emerged in the impeller inlet, impeller outlet, and volute tongue. Correspondingly, the head and efficiency of a combination impeller are higher with comparison to a conventional impeller. Consequently, it is a promising approach in ameliorating the flow field and improving external performance by applying a combination impeller to an aero-fuel centrifugal pump.

The double-stage axially split centrifugal pump is widely used in water diversion and water pumping stations due to their ability to deliver at high heads and large flow rate for long running hours. Their flow characteristics can be greatly influenced by the geometry of the channels between the stages, which is a prominent place for irreversible loss to occur. Numerical investigations were extensively carried out and a comparison was drawn between two multistage axially split centrifugal pumps, with different channel designs between its stages. The reliability of the numerical model was confirmed after a good agreement existed between numerical results and the experiments. Subsequently, entropy generation terms were used to evaluate turbulence dissipation to characterize the flow losses. The modified channels had a great effect on reducing swirl near the impeller eye, thereby improving pump head by 12.5% and efficiency by 4.98% at the design condition. They however induced flow impact, causing an unusual separation, which generated high turbulence dissipation at the blade surfaces. The channels and second stage impeller were identified as major areas for selective optimization since their turbulence dissipation was dominant. Consequently, entropy production analysis with computational fluid dynamics could be relied upon to reveal the loss locations for selective optimization in centrifugal pumps.

This paper presents a high-speed aero-fuel centrifugal pump with an active inlet injector for an aero-engine aiming at regulating the internal flow field and improving overall hydraulic performance. Unlike most of the existing centrifugal pumps for aero-engines, an injector is designed and integrated with the pump to accomplish the active flow control. Firstly, by employing the energy equation in the pump, reasonable geometrical parameters of the injector are calculated. Then, a validation study is conducted with three known turbulence models, showing that simulations with the RNG κ- ε turbulence model can accurately predict the head and efficiency of the experimental pump. Finally, simulation results with the determined turbulence model are discussed. The results show that the static pressure is uniformly distributed inside the impeller, the volute and the injector. The flow field is significantly ameliorated by improving the pressure inside the suction pipe and controlling the flow direction via the injector. Furthermore, the head and efficiency of the designed pump with an active inlet injector are improved compared to the one without an injector.

AbstractCavitation is a phenomenon that occurs easily during rotation of fluid machinery and can decrease the performance of a pump, thereby resulting in damage to flow passage components. To study the influence of wall roughness on the cavitation performance of a centrifugal pump, a three-dimensional model of internal flow field of a centrifugal pump was constructed and a numerical simulation of cavitation in the flow field was conducted with ANSYS CFX software based on the Reynolds normalization group k-epsilon turbulence model and Zwart cavitation model. The cavitation can be further divided into four stages: cavitation inception, cavitation development, critical cavitation, and fracture cavitation. Influencing laws of wall roughness of the blade surface on the cavitation performance of a centrifugal pump were analyzed. Research results demonstrate that in the design process of centrifugal pumps, decreasing the wall roughness appropriately during the cavitation development and critical cavitation is important to effectively improve the cavitation performance of pumps. Moreover, a number of nucleation sites on the blade surface increase with the increase in wall roughness, thereby expanding the low-pressure area of the blade. Research conclusions can provide theoretical references to improve cavitation performance and optimize the structural design of the pump.

The strong noise generated during the operation of the centrifugal pump harms the pump group and people. In order to decrease the noise of the centrifugal pump, a specific speed of 117.3 of the centrifugal pump is chosen as a research object. The bionic modification of centrifugal pump blades is carried out to explore the influence of different bionic structures on the noise reduction performance of centrifugal pumps. The internal flow field and internal sound field of bionic blades are studied by numerical calculation and test methods. The test is carried out on a closed pump test platform which includes external characteristics and a flow noise test system. The effects of two different bionic structures on the external characteristics, acoustic amplitude–frequency characteristics and flow field structure of a centrifugal pump, are analyzed. The results show that the pit structure has little influence on the external characteristic parameters, while the sawtooth structure has a relatively great influence. The noise reduction effect of the pit structure is aimed at the wide-band noise, while the sawtooth structure is aimed at the discrete noise of the blade-passing frequency (BPF) and its frequency doubling. The noise reduction ability of the sawtooth structure is not suitable for high-frequency bands.

Abstract The check valve is one of the most important devices for safety protection of the piping system in thermal and nuclear power plants. As the key component of the check valve, the valve disc accounts for a major effect on the flow characteristics especially during the opening and closing processes. In this paper, a typical swing check valve is taken as the research object. In order to make a comparative study, three working conditions of 30% THA (Turbine Heat Acceptance), 50% THA and 100% THA are selected. Focusing on the effects of valve disc, how does the valve disc motion interact with the flow field around the valve disc is analyzed with the help of the dynamic mesh technology. The results show that under the combined action of fluid force and gravity, the check valve can be opened and closed quickly. During the opening process, the maximum total moment of the disc appears between 45° ∼ 50° opening angle, and during the closing process the maximum total moment occurs when the disc fully closed. The flow field near the valve disc has similar variation rules with the rotation of the valve disc in the three working conditions, and the pressure near the valve disc reaches the maximum value at the moment of opening and closing. This study can provide some suggestions for the further optimal design of similar swing check valve.

The backflow vortexes at the suction connection in high-speed centrifugal pumps have negative effect on the flow field. Setting an orifice plate in front of the inducer is able to decrease the negative effect caused by backflow vortexes. The traditional plate is able to partially control the backflow vortexes, but a small part of the vortex is still in the inlet and the inducer. Four new types of orifice plates were created, and the control effects on backflow vortexes were analyzed. The ANSYS-CFX software was used to numerically simulate a high-speed centrifugal pump. The variations of streamline and velocity vectors at the suction connection were analyzed. Meanwhile, the effects of these plates on the impeller pressure and the internal flow field of the inducer were analyzed. Numerically, simulation and experimental data analysis methods were used to compare the head and efficiency of the high-speed pumps. The results show that the C-type orifice plate can improve the backflow vortex, reduce the low-pressure area, and improve the hydraulic performance of the high-speed pump.

The aerostatic circular thrust bearing was taken as a study subject. The numerical simulation method was used to calculate the flow passage. Meanwhile, the single-point testing method was used to test the pressure distribution. The simulation and experiment measurement results were compared and analyzed. The results show that: The single-point testing method is effective to capture the change of flow characteristics. The overall results of simulation and testing coincide with each other well. In the range of cone cavity, the flow pattern for the gas is turbulent flow, and the flow field should be divided into different zones for simulation.

In order to study the flow characteristics of centrifugal pumps when transporting the gas-liquid mixture, water and air were chosen as the working medium. Both numerical simulation and experimental tests were conducted on a centrifugal pump under different conditions of inlet air volume fraction (IAVF). The calculation used URANS k-epsilon turbulence model combined with the Euler-Euler inhomogeneous two-phase model. The air distribution and velocity streamline inside the impeller were obtained to discuss the flow characteristics of the pump. The results show that air concentration is high at the inlet pressure side of the blade, where the vortex will exist, indicating that the gas concentration have a great relationship with the vortex aggregation in the impeller passages. In the experimental works, pump performances were measured at different IAVF and compared with numerical results. Contributions to the centrifugal pump performance degradations were analyzed under different air-water inlet flow condition such as IAVF, bubble size, inlet pressure. Results show that pump performance degradation is more pronounced for low flow rates compared to high flow rates. Finally, pressure pulsation and vibration experiments of the pump model under different IAVF were also conducted. Inlet and outlet transient pressure signals under four IAVF were investigated and pressure pulsation frequency of the monitors is near the blade passing frequency at different IAVF, and when IAVF increased, the lower frequency signal is more and more obvious. Vibration signals at five measuring points were also obtained under different IAVF for various flow rates.

In order to research the influence laws of the main geometrical parameters of auxiliary impeller and different operation conditions on the centrifugal pump with an auxiliary impeller, which aimed to act as dynamic seal, the orthogonal experiment was designed with four factors and three values. The factors respectively are auxiliary impeller axial clearance, blade width, outlet diameter and blade number. With simulation by Fluent, major and minor factors were investigated which influence the performance of the centrifugal pump with an auxiliary impeller. The cases with optimization sealing pressure value and optimization efficiency were obtained and it was proved by the experimental results. Then, two optimization cases and the original case were simulated and analyzed. The research results show that the major factor of auxiliary impellers for the pump efficiency is the outlet diameter. For sealing pressure head of auxiliary impellers, the major factor is the outlet diameter of auxiliary impeller and the axial clearance and blade number of the auxiliary impeller are secondary important factors. For the optimization of centrifugal pumps with an auxiliary impeller, numerical orthogonal tests can replace actual orthogonal tests.
