Energy supply in remote areas (mainly in developing countries such as Colombia) has become a challenge. Hybrid microgrids are local and reliable sources of energy for these areas where access to the power grid is generally limited or unavailable. These systems generally include a diesel generator, solar modules, wind turbines, and storage devices such as batteries. Battery life estimation is an essential factor in the optimization of a hybrid microgrid since it determines the system’s final costs, including future battery replacements. This article presents a comparison of different technologies and battery models in a hybrid microgrid. The optimization is achieved using the iHOGA software, based on data from a real microgrid in Colombia. The simulation results allowed the comparison of prediction models for lifespan calculation for both lead–acid and lithium batteries in a hybrid microgrid, showing that the most accurate models are more realistic in predicting battery life by closely estimating real lifespans that are shorter, unlike other simplified methods that obtain much longer and unrealistic lifetimes.

Several models for estimating the lifetimes of lead-acid and Li-ion (LiFePO4) batteries are analyzed and applied to a photovoltaic (PV)-battery standalone system. This kind of system usually includes a battery bank sized for 2.5 autonomy days or more. The results obtained by each model in different locations with very different average temperatures are compared. Two different locations have been considered: the Pyrenees mountains in Spain and Tindouf in Argelia. Classical battery aging models (equivalent full cycles model and rainflow cycle count model) generally used by researchers and software tools are not adequate as they overestimate the battery life in all cases. For OPzS lead-acid batteries, an advanced weighted Ah-throughput model is necessary to correctly estimate its lifetime, obtaining a battery life of roughly 12 years for the Pyrenees and around 5 years for the case Tindouf. For Li-ion batteries, both the cycle and calendar aging must be considered, obtaining more than 20 years of battery life estimation for the Pyrenees and 13 years for Tindouf. In the cases studied, the lifetime of LiFePO4 batteries is around two times the OPzS lifetime. As nowadays the cost of LiFePO4 batteries is around two times the OPzS ones, Li-ion batteries can be competitive with OPzS batteries in PV-battery standalone systems.

The growth of the lithium-ion battery market is accelerating. Although they are widely used in various fields, ranging from mobile devices to large-capacity energy storage devices, stability has always been a problem, which is a critical disadvantage of lithium-ion batteries. If the battery is unstable, which usually occurs at the end of its life, problems such as overheating and overcurrent during charge-discharge increase. In this paper, we propose a method to accurately predict battery life in order to secure battery stability. Unlike the existing methods, we propose a method of assessing the life of a battery by estimating the irreversible energy from the basic law of entropy using voltage, current, and time in a realistic dimension. The life estimation accuracy using the proposed method was at least 91.6%, and the accuracy was higher than 94% when considering the actual used range. The experimental results proved that the proposed method is a practical and effective method for estimating the life of lithium-ion batteries.

The performance of power lithium batteries directly affects the performance of electric vehicles. To ensure the safety of power lithium batteries and improve battery life, this paper uses Ricoh R5408 Series Li-ion battery protection IC to design the high-current protection board for electric vehicle, to achieve the power lithium battery group overcharge protection, over-discharge protection, over current, short circuit protection, temperature protection and charge balance protection, and has run on the pure electric vehicles with good test results.

Graphene and related two-dimensional crystals and hybrid systems showcase several key properties that can address emerging energy needs, in particular for the ever growing market of portable and wearable energy conversion and storage devices. Graphene’s flexibility, large surface area, and chemical stability, combined with its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, make it promising as a catalyst in fuel and dye-sensitized solar cells. Chemically functionalized graphene can also improve storage and diffusion of ionic species and electric charge in batteries and supercapacitors. Two-dimensional crystals provide optoelectronic and photocatalytic properties complementing those of graphene, enabling the realization of ultrathin-film photovoltaic devices or systems for hydrogen production. Here, we review the use of graphene and related materials for energy conversion and storage, outlining the roadmap for future applications.
