Integrated energy systems (IES) incorporating on-site power generation provide opportunities for improving reliability in energy supply, maximizing fuel efficiency, and enhancing environmental quality. To fully realize these attributes, optimum design and dynamic performance of integrated systems for a given application have to be pursued. Whether referred to as cogeneration, combined heat and power (CHP) or building cooling, heating, and power (BCHP), integrated energy systems manifest effective energy management aimed at closing spatial and temporal gaps between demand and supply of electrical and thermal energy. This is accomplished by on-site power production and utilization of the resulting thermal energy availability for thermally-driven technologies including desiccant dehumidification, absorption cooling, and space heating. The notion that the demands for thermal and electrical energy are not always congruent and in phase signifies the importance of considering thermal energy storage (TES) for integration. This paper explores the potential impact of implementing TES technology on the overall performance of integrated energy systems from the first- and second-law perspectives. In doing so, the dynamics of packed bed thermal energy storage systems for potential energy recovery from the exhaust gas of microturbines are investigated. Using a validated simulation model, the transient thermal response of these TES systems is examined via parametric analyses that allow variation in the thermal energy availability and physical characteristics of the packed beds. The parasitic electrical energy requirement associated with the pressure losses in the packed beds is included in the performance assessment. The results of this study are indicative of the promising role of TES in integrated energy systems.

The global energy matrix is going to embrace more and more renewable-based combined energy systems. Therefore, multi-generation energy systems, like CHPs (combined heat and power) could be extremely beneficial for such integrated energy systems. Also, the trend is toward 100% sustainable production where both renewable and waste energy sources are of special value. Especially, in Europe, waste incineration has received special attention over the past decades, as not only it is a smart method of waste disposal, but also a measure of cheap and environmentally friendly energy production. This study proposes a municipal waste-driven tri-generation (cold, heat, and power) system and assesses how this solution helps for easier integration of energy sectors and having a more sustainable chain of energy supply. Then, the solution is comprehensively analyzed over thorough thermodynamic, thermoeconomic, and thermoenvironmental investigations. The results of the assessments show that the proposed trigeneration system may effectively operate in any energy systems with simultaneous cold, heat, and power demands. Thermal, exergetic, fuel-to-power, fuel-to-heat, and fuel-to-cold efficiencies are found to be 83.28, 25.69, 23.49, 47.41, and 12.38%, respectively, while the payback period of 6 years is obtained based on the net present method.

Recently, integrated energy systems have become a new type of energy supply model. It is clear that integrated energy systems can improve energy efficiency and reduce costs. However, the use of a battery energy storage system (BESS) as a backup power source will affect the operating costs of a regional integrated energy system (RIES) in different situations. In this paper, a regional integrated energy system including wind turbines, photovoltaics, gas turbines and battery energy storage was introduced. In order to obtain the minimum operation cost, an operation optimization model was built. The schedule plans of each unit were optimized by a moth flame optimization (MFO) algorithm. Finally, three different scenarios were proposed for the simulation optimization. The simulation optimization results show that when the BESS is used as a backup power source, the operating cost of the system and the resulting pollutant emissions are less than the diesel generator (DG) set. Therefore, it is worthwhile to use BESS instead of DG as the backup power source in RIES.

The Impact

How to consider the impact of load substitution on user-side participating in multi-energy trading on system operation when configuring multi-type energy storage (MES) is an urgent problem that needs to be solved to improve the economics and energy efficiency of the integrated energy systems (IES). This paper presents an optimal configuration method of MES considering multi-energy trading with load substitution based on the characteristics of different energy supply seasons. Firstly, the multi-energy trading framework and MES configuration principle are proposed based on the structure of the IES. Secondly, a MES optimal configuration model for IES considering multi-energy trading with load substitution is established, then the IES trading strategies and MES planning schemes are solved. Finally, the proposed method is verified by an example. The results show that the proposed method reduces the MES configuration cost by 8.9%. It can be seen that the MES configuration method proposed in this paper is helpful to repair the limitations of energy storage configuration research in IES and improve the economic benefits of the system.
