With the continuous development of mobile communications and the Internet of Things technology, the enhanced network performance can be seen as one of the major challenges in the fourth industrial revolution context, where new services and applications with strict performance requirements have emerged, such as driverless vehicles, smart cities, factories, and manufacturing, among others. These new services and applications also drive growth of the data traffic, which is increasing exponentially. Thus, in mobile network environments, industry and academia are proposing new mechanisms to overcome the traffic bottlenecks and reduce the signaling overhead that affects current networks. Centralized Mobility Management solutions are prone to several problems such as the aforementioned signaling overhead or scalability issues. To overcome these limitations, Distributed Mobility Management approaches are being considered. In this paper, an analytical cost model and experimental evaluation will be developed for evaluating the performance of the Distributed Mobility Management implementations. Furthermore, a new approach will be proposed to improve network performance.

Mobile data traffic in the Internet has experienced an exponential growth due to the widespread presence of multimedia capable mobile devices and the deployment of multiple wireless networks. With this continuous development of mobile communications, the achievement of an efficient IP mobility management protocol has revealed as one of the major challenges in next-generation wireless networks. Mobility management solutions are responsible for maintaining the ongoing communications while the user roams among distinct networks. Mobile IPv6 and Proxy Mobile IPv6 are the most representative solutions standardized by the IETF. Recently, the IPv6 mobility support has been newly integrated into the kernel sources and Linux mobility ready kernels are available from versions 3.8.1. In this article, we conduct an analytic and experimental evaluation of Mobile IPv6 and Proxy Mobile IPv6. We develop an analytic model of the signaling and handover latency. Moreover, we present an experimental study these protocols based on their open source implementations. We provide numerical results based on experiments made in real scenarios under different network conditions.

The advent of various wireless technologies has paved the way for the realization of new infrastructures and applications for smart cities. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are one of the most important among these technologies. WSNs are widely used in various applications in our daily lives. Due to their cost effectiveness and rapid deployment, WSNs can be used for securing smart cities by providing remote monitoring and sensing for many critical scenarios including hostile environments, battlefields, or areas subject to natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcano eruptions, and floods or to large-scale accidents such as nuclear plants explosions or chemical plumes. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new framework where WSNs are adopted for remote sensing and monitoring in smart city applications. We propose using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to act as a data mule to offload the sensor nodes and transfer the monitoring data securely to the remote control center for further analysis and decision making. Furthermore, the paper provides insight about implementation challenges in the realization of the proposed framework. In addition, the paper provides an experimental evaluation of the proposed design in outdoor environments, in the presence of different types of obstacles, common to typical outdoor fields. The experimental evaluation revealed several inconsistencies between the performance metrics advertised in the hardware-specific data-sheets. In particular, we found mismatches between the advertised coverage distance and signal strength with our experimental measurements. Therefore, it is crucial that network designers and developers conduct field tests and device performance assessment before designing and implementing the WSN for application in a real field setting.

Internet of Things technology and industrial development will trigger a new round of information technology revolution and industrial revolution, and they are the commanding point of future competition in information industry and core driving force of industrial upgrade. This paper introduces current situation of distance teaching of Internet of Things and architecture specialties, designs and implements distance teaching experiment system platform for architecture specialty based on Internet of Things. This system is based on ZigBee /GPRS wireless network technology, sensor technology, embedded technology, Web distributed software technology and database technology. Besides, it adopts three interlinked networks and achieves efficient connection of multiple experiment terminals, servers and clients. As well, the information exchange is fast. Hence, it is convenient for practical application of distance teaching. The results of teaching experiment show that Internet of Things technology can improve students’ academic performance and teachers’ teaching effect. Therefore, it is a hot spot in modern teaching technology, so we should pay attention to it.
