Forest fire smoke detection based on deep learning has been widely studied. Labeling the smoke image is a necessity when building datasets of target detection and semantic segmentation. The uncertainty in labeling the forest fire smoke pixels caused by the non-uniform diffusion of smoke particles will affect the recognition accuracy of the deep learning model. To overcome the labeling ambiguity, the weighted idea was proposed in this paper for the first time. First, the pixel-concentration relationship between the gray value and the concentration of forest fire smoke pixels in the image was established. Second, the loss function of the semantic segmentation method based on concentration weighting was built and improved; thus, the network could pay attention to the smoke pixels differently, an effort to better segment smoke by weighting the loss calculation of smoke pixels. Finally, based on the established forest fire smoke dataset, selection of the optimum weighted factors was made through experiments. mIoU based on the weighted method increased by 1.52% than the unweighted method. The weighted method cannot only be applied to the semantic segmentation and target detection of forest fire smoke, but also has a certain significance to other dispersive target recognition.

AbstractUrban area mapping is an important application of remote sensing which aims at both estimation and change in land cover under the urban area. A major challenge being faced while analyzing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) based remote sensing data is that there is a lot of similarity between highly vegetated urban areas and oriented urban targets with that of actual vegetation. This similarity between some urban areas and vegetation leads to misclassification of the urban area into forest cover. The present work is a precursor study for the dual-frequency L and S-band NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission and aims at minimizing the misclassification of such highly vegetated and oriented urban targets into vegetation class with the help of deep learning. In this study, three machine learning algorithms Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) have been implemented along with a deep learning model DeepLabv3+ for semantic segmentation of Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data. It is a general perception that a large dataset is required for the successful implementation of any deep learning model but in the field of SAR based remote sensing, a major issue is the unavailability of a large benchmark labeled dataset for the implementation of deep learning algorithms from scratch. In current work, it has been shown that a pre-trained deep learning model DeepLabv3+ outperforms the machine learning algorithms for land use and land cover (LULC) classification task even with a small dataset using transfer learning. The highest pixel accuracy of 87.78% and overall pixel accuracy of 85.65% have been achieved with DeepLabv3+ and Random Forest performs best among the machine learning algorithms with overall pixel accuracy of 77.91% while SVM and KNN trail with an overall accuracy of 77.01% and 76.47% respectively. The highest precision of 0.9228 is recorded for the urban class for semantic segmentation task with DeepLabv3+ while machine learning algorithms SVM and RF gave comparable results with a precision of 0.8977 and 0.8958 respectively.

Abstract With the increase in the number of traction substations year by year, manual inspections are gradually being replaced by unattended inspections. Target detection algorithms based on deep learning are more widely used in intelligent inspections of power equipment. However, in practical applications, it is found that due to the small target to be detected, the accuracy of the deep learning model will decrease when the shooting angle is inclined and the light conditions are poor. This is because the algorithm’s robustness is low, and the detection ability of the model will be seriously affected when the angle or illumination difference with the sample is large. Based on this, the feature fusion part of the YOLOv3 algorithm and the selection of the loss function and the size of the anchor frame are improved, and the improved ASFF fusion method is used to classify various images in the power equipment. Actual measurement and repeated experiments show that the proposed method can be effectively applied to image recognition of various power equipment, optimize robustness, and greatly improve the image recognition efficiency of power equipment.

Human eye movement is one of the most important functions for understanding our surroundings. When a human eye processes a scene, it quickly focuses on dominant parts of the scene, commonly known as a visual saliency detection or visual attention prediction. Recently, neural networks have been used to predict visual saliency. This paper proposes a deep learning encoder-decoder architecture, based on a transfer learning technique, to predict visual saliency. In the proposed model, visual features are extracted through convolutional layers from raw images to predict visual saliency. In addition, the proposed model uses the VGG-16 network for semantic segmentation, which uses a pixel classification layer to predict the categorical label for every pixel in an input image. The proposed model is applied to several datasets, including TORONTO, MIT300, MIT1003, and DUT-OMRON, to illustrate its efficiency. The results of the proposed model are quantitatively and qualitatively compared to classic and state-of-the-art deep learning models. Using the proposed deep learning model, a global accuracy of up to 96.22% is achieved for the prediction of visual saliency.

Machine translation is used in many applications in everyday life. Due to the increase of translated documents that need to be organized as useful or not (for building a translation model), the automated categorization of texts (classification), is a popular research field of machine learning. This kind of information can be quite helpful for machine translation. Our parallel corpora (English-Greek and English-Italian) are based on educational data, which are quite difficult to translate. We apply two state of the art architectures, Random Forest (RF) and Deeplearnig4j (DL4J), to our data (which constitute three translation outputs). To our knowledge, this is the first time that deep learning architectures are applied to the automatic selection of parallel data. We also propose new string-based features that seem to be effective for the classifier, and we investigate whether an attribute selection method could be used for better classification accuracy. Experimental results indicate an increase of up to 4% (compared to our previous work) using RF and rather satisfactory results using DL4J.

AbstractTumor-specific neoantigens play the main role for developing personal vaccines in cancer immunotherapy. We propose, for the first time, a personalized de novo sequencing workflow to identify HLA-I and HLA-II neoantigens directly and solely from mass spectrometry data. Our workflow trains a personal deep learning model on the immunopeptidome of an individual patient and then uses it to predict mutated neoantigens of that patient. This personalized learning and mass spectrometry-based approach enables comprehensive and accurate identification of neoantigens. We applied the workflow to datasets of five melanoma patients and substantially improved the accuracy and identification rate of de novo HLA peptides by 14.3% and 38.9%, respectively. This subsequently led to the identification of 10,440 HLA-I and 1,585 HLA-II new peptides that were not presented in existing databases. Most importantly, our workflow successfully discovered 17 neoantigens of both HLA-I and HLA-II, including those with validated T cell responses and those novel neoantigens that had not been reported in previous studies.

As the techniques of autonomous driving become increasingly valued and universal, real-time semantic segmentation has become very popular and challenging in the field of deep learning and computer vision in recent years. However, in order to apply the deep learning model to edge devices accompanying sensors on vehicles, we need to design a structure that has the best trade-off between accuracy and inference time. In previous works, several methods sacrificed accuracy to obtain a faster inference time, while others aimed to find the best accuracy under the condition of real time. Nevertheless, the accuracies of previous real-time semantic segmentation methods still have a large gap compared to general semantic segmentation methods. As a result, we propose a network architecture based on a dual encoder and a self-attention mechanism. Compared with preceding works, we achieved a 78.6% mIoU with a speed of 39.4 FPS with a 1024 × 2048 resolution on a Cityscapes test submission.
