In this work, the production of biologically synthesized silica nanoparticles was proposed to prepare a nanosuspension as a thermal fluid in parabolic solar panels at the laboratory level. Silica nanoparticles were produced from construction sand in two stages. Biosynthesis broth was produced by Aspergillus niger aerated fermentation in a 1 L bioreactor for 9 days. Each supernatant was contacted with 18% construction sand in a 500 L reactor with mechanical agitation, at a temperature of 25 °C, and a contact time of 30 min. Subsequently, the separation process was carried out. For day 9, a pH value of 1.71 was obtained as well as acid concentrations of 15.78 g/L for citrus and 4.16 g/L for malic. The metal extraction efficiency of Si nanoparticles was 19%. The vibration peaks in the FTIR were characteristic of the presence of silica nanoparticles in wavenumbers 1020 cm−1 and 1150 cm−1. Finally, a prototype solar radiation test bench for parabolic systems was built and provided with a radiation source that falls on a translucent pipe that transports the nanoparticles, which has a pump and a series of thermocouples. The heat capacity of the biotechnologically produced silica nanoparticle suspension was 0.72 ± 0.05 kJ/kgK, using material and energy balances in the flow circuit.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) of sizes 5 to10 nm were synthesized by the co-precipitation method. They are coated with silica nanoparticles using sonication method. The SPION was produced under the optimum pH of 10, peptized in acidic medium and redispersed in water. The silica nanoparticles were produced through the Stöbermethod. Sonochemical coating of silica nanoparticle on the SPION was successfulat a pH value lower than 5. Otherwise, at higher pH value (but lower than point zero charge (PZC)), the SPION were found to be unstable. Fast hydrolysis of triethoxyvinylsilane(TEVS) shows that silica forms its own particles without coating onto the surfaces of the SPION. Under optimized experimental condition, sonochemical method of coating silica nanoparticles onto the SPION can be considered as an alternative for effective and prompt method that rely mainly on pH of the suspension.

Amphiphilic porphyrin derivatives adsorbed onto silica nanoparticles via noncovalent interactions have been prepared and characterized. The organic-inorganic hybrids have been obtained by simply stirring a nanoparticle suspension into an aqueous solvent mixture of porphyrin aggregates. The systems obtained show good stability in aqueous solvents, at different pH, and also in toluene. Analogous protocol has been applied to the macrocycles in monomeric form, obtaining the corresponding nanoparticle-porphyrin adducts. These systems are of interest for the development of sensors and medicinal application.

Photonic crystals employ optical properties based on optical, physical, chemical, and material science. Nanosilica particles have a high specific surface area and are widely used in nanotechnology research and biomedical applications. In this study, nanosilica particles were fabricated by sol–gel methods, and the particle sizes of the silica nanoparticles were 280, 232, and 187 nm, based on dynamic light scattering. The silica nanoparticle suspension solution was heated to boiling for fast evaporation processing for self-assembly to fabricate three-dimensional photonic glass for structural color coatings. The sample had an adjustable structural color (red: 640 nm, green: 532 nm, and blue: 432 nm). The microstructures of various structure-colored samples were arranged, but there was a disordered solid arrangement of silica nanoparticles. These were not perfect opal-based photonic crystals. Compared to opal-based photonic crystals, the arrangement of silica nanoparticles was a glassy structure with a short-range order. Due to the accumulation of silica nanoparticle aggregates, samples displayed a stable colloidal film, independent of the viewing angle. In our study, the fast solvent evaporation in the self-assembly process led to the formation of a colloidal amorphous array, and it fitted the requirement for non-iridescence. Non-iridescent photonic glass with various colors was obtained. This type of color coating has wide potential applications, including reflective displays, colorimetric sensors, textiles, and buildings.

A new concept of the architecture of hybrid lighting systems for installations of combined lighting is considered. The cascade principle of constructing the optical path of such complexes is described, in which the design contains two stages of the cascade: the upper and lower stages. The upper (input) structure is made on the basis of the corresponding modification of the hollow tube “Solatube®” (daylight), and the lower one, based on the “Solatube®” fibre of a larger diameter, is combined with LED artificial light block and is designed to transmit mixed light (daylight and artificial light). The results of studies on the efficiency of light transmission made it possible to optimize the solution of the new modification of the hybrid lighting complex “Solar LED”, lower stage of the cascade, and to develop the nomenclature of the production line “S”. The description of the first experience of using this complex in the pilot combined illumination system of the “meeting room” in the shopping centre “IKEA Belaya Dacha” headquarters is given. A completely autonomous power supply system for a lighting installation based on solar panels has been implemented.

Background: Herbicides are very beneficial in the crop yield with the aid of controlling weeds within the agriculture, but several herbicides are chronic in soil. Objective: In this study, nanoparticles and the packages of synthesized novel silica nanoparticles were studied for the preconcentration of herbicides. Methods: These nanoparticles prepared by the Stöber mechanism were purified and functionalized. Nanoparticles thus prepared successfully were used as supporting material for the preconcentration of residues of herbicides in the water. Results: Preconcentration was achieved by preparing the silica-based solid-phase-extraction cartridges. Nanoparticles used for this purpose were within the range of 50-250 nm. An SPE cartridge was prepared by packing 200 mg of silica nanoparticle in the empty cartridge of diameter 5.5 cm and length 0.6 cm in between PTFE frits. Aqueous solutions of 0.1 μg/ml of herbicides were prepared separately, and 10 ml of the solution was passed through the cartridge at the rate of 0.2 ml/min. After passing 10 ml volume of the aqueous solution, residues adsorbed on the cartridge were eluted using 2 ml of acetonitrile. The eluate was injected to determine the herbicide residue adsorbed on the SPE cartridge. Conclusion: In the study, it was found that greater than 90% of the herbicide residues were trapped on silica nanoparticle-based SPE cartridge. An analytical method was developed for the simultaneous determination of these herbicides. The residues were quantified by LC-MS/MS with ESI mode.

The highly prescribed antidepressant, citalopram, as one of newly emerging pollutants, has been frequently detected in the aquatic environment. Citalopram oxidation was examined during sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorine dioxide (ClO2) chlorination processes since conventional wastewater treatment plants cannot remove citalopram effectively. Citalopram has been demonstrated to form N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) during chlorination in our previous study. Further investigation on NDMA formation kinetics was conducted in the present study. Influences of operational variables (disinfectant dose, pH value) and water matrix on citalopram degradation, as well as NDMA generation, were evaluated. The results indicated high reactivity of citalopram with NaOCl and ClO2. NDMA formation included two stages during CIT oxidation, which were linear related with reaction time. NaOCl was more beneficial to remove CIT, but it caused more NDMA formation. Increasing disinfectant dosage promoted citalopram removal and NDMA formation. However, no consistent correlation was found between citalopram removal and pH. Contrary to the situation of citalopram removal, NDMA generation was enhanced when citalopram was present in actual water matrices, especially in secondary effluent. DMA, as an intermediate of citalopram chlorination, contributed to NDMA formation, but not the only way.

In the current work, the characterization of novel chitosan/silica nanoparticle/nisin films with the addition of nisin as an antimicrobial technique for blueberry preservation during storage is investigated. Chitosan/Silica Nanoparticle/N (CH-SN-N) films presented a stable suspension as the surface loads (45.9 mV) and the distribution was considered broad (0.62). The result shows that the pH value was increased gradually with the addition of nisin to 4.12, while the turbidity was the highest at 0.39. The content of the insoluble matter and contact angle were the highest for the Chitosan/Silica Nanoparticle (CH-SN) film at 5.68%. The use of nano-materials in chitosan films decreased the material ductility, reduced the tensile strength and elongation-at-break of the membrane. The coated blueberries with Chitosan/Silica Nanoparticle/N films reported the lowest microbial contamination counts at 2.82 log CFU/g followed by Chitosan/Silica Nanoparticle at 3.73 and 3.58 log CFU/g for the aerobic bacteria, molds, and yeasts population, respectively. It was observed that (CH) film extracted 94 regions with an average size of 449.10, at the same time (CH-SN) film extracted 169 regions with an average size of 130.53. The (CH-SN-N) film presented the best result at 5.19%. It could be observed that the size of the total region of the fruit for the (CH) case was the smallest (1663 pixels), which implied that the fruit lost moisture content. As a conclusion, (CH-SN-N) film is recommended for blueberry preservation to prolong the shelf-life during storage.
